We report on the structure of the nuclear star cluster in the innermost 0.16 pc of the Galaxy as measured by the number density profile of late-type giants. Using laser guide star adaptive optics in conjunction with the integral field spectrograph, OSIRIS, at the Keck II telescope, we are able to differentiate between the older, late-type ($sim$ 1 Gyr) stars, which are presumed to be dynamically relaxed, and the unrelaxed young ($sim$ 6 Myr) population. This distinction is crucial for testing models of stellar cusp formation in the vicinity of a black hole, as the models assume that the cusp stars are in dynamical equilibrium in the black hole potential. Based on the late-type stars alone, the surface stellar number density profile, $Sigma(R) propto R^{-Gamma}$, is flat, with $Gamma = -0.27pm0.19$. Monte Carlo simulations of the possible de-projected volume density profile, n(r) $propto r^{-gamma}$, show that $gamma$ is less than 1.0 at the 99.73 % confidence level. These results are consistent with the nuclear star cluster having no cusp, with a core profile that is significantly flatter than predicted by most cusp formation theories, and even allows for the presence of a central hole in the stellar distribution. Of the possible dynamical interactions that can lead to the depletion of the red giants observable in this survey -- stellar collisions, mass segregation from stellar remnants, or a recent merger event -- mass segregation is the only one that can be ruled out as the dominant depletion mechanism. The lack of a stellar cusp around a supermassive black hole would have important implications for black hole growth models and inferences on the presence of a black hole based upon stellar distributions.

(Abridged) We report on the structure of the nuclear star cluster in the innermost 0.16 pc of the Galaxy as measured by the number density profile of late-type giants. Using laser guide star adaptive optics in conjunction with the integral field spec trograph, OSIRIS, at the Keck II telescope, we are able to differentiate between the older, late-type (~ 1 Gyr) stars, which are presumed to be dynamically relaxed, and the unrelaxed young (~ 6 Myr) population. This distinction is crucial for testing models of stellar cusp formation in the vicinity of a black hole, as the models assume that the cusp stars are in dynamical equilibrium in the black hole potential. We find that contamination from young stars is significant, with more than twice as many young stars as old stars in our sensitivity range (K < 15.5) within the central arcsecond. Based on the late-type stars alone, the surface stellar number density profile, is flat, with a projected power law slope of -0.26+-0.24. These results are consistent with the nuclear star cluster having no cusp, with a core profile that is significantly flatter than predicted by most cusp formation theories. Here, we also review the methods for further constraining the true three-dimensional radial profile using kinematic measurements. Precise acceleration measurements in the plane of the sky as well as along the line of sight has the potential to directly measure the density profile to establish whether there is a hole in the distribution of late-type stars in the inner 0.1 pc.
We observe two metal-poor main sequence stars that are members of the recently-discovered Sylgr stellar stream. We present radial velocities, stellar parameters, and abundances for 13 elements derived from high-resolution optical spectra collected us ing the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrograph. The two stars have identical compositions (within 0.13 dex or 1.2 sigma) among all elements detected. Both stars are very metal poor ([Fe/H] = -2.92 +/- 0.06). Neither star is highly enhanced in C ([C/Fe] < +1.0). Both stars are enhanced in the alpha elements Mg, Si, and Ca ([alpha/Fe] = +0.32 +/- 0.06), and ratios among Na, Al, and all Fe-group elements are typical for other stars in the halo and ultra-faint and dwarf spheroidal galaxies at this metallicity. Sr is mildly enhanced ([Sr/Fe] = +0.22 +/- 0.11), but Ba is not enhanced ([Ba/Fe] < -0.4), indicating that these stars do not contain high levels of neutron-capture elements. The Li abundances match those found in metal-poor unevolved field stars and globular clusters (log epsilon (Li) = 2.05 +/- 0.07), which implies that environment is not a dominant factor in determining the Li content of metal-poor stars. The chemical compositions of these two stars cannot distinguish whether the progenitor of the Sylgr stream was a dwarf galaxy or a globular cluster. If the progenitor was a dwarf galaxy, the stream may originate from a dense region such as a nuclear star cluster. If the progenitor was a globular cluster, it would be the most metal-poor globular cluster known.
We present a summary of high-spatial resolution follow-up observations of the elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) galaxies in the SAURON survey using the OASIS integral field spectrograph. The OASIS observations explore the central 8x10 regions of the se galaxies using a spatial sampling four times higher than SAURON, often revealing previously undiscovered features. Around 75% (31/48) of the SAURON E/S0s with central velocity dispersion >= 120 km/s were observed with OASIS, covering well the original SAURON representative sample. We present here an overview of this follow-up survey, and some preliminary results on individual objects, including a previously unreported counter-rotating core in NGC 4382; the decoupled stellar and gas velocity fields of NGC 2768; and the strong age gradient towards the centre of NGC 3489.
We are now in an era where we can image details on the surfaces of stars. When resolving stellar surfaces, we see that every surface is uniquely complicated. Each imaged star provides insight into not only the stellar surface structures, but also the stellar interiors suggesting constraints on evolution and dynamo models. As more resources become operational in the coming years, imaging stellar surfaces should become commonplace for revealing the true nature of stars. Here, we discuss the main types of stars for which imaging surface features is currently useful and what improved observing techniques would provide for imaging stellar surface features.

We report the first detailed chemical abundances for 5 globular clusters (GCs) in M31 from high-resolution (R ~ 25,000) spectroscopy of their integrated light. These GCs are the first in a larger set of clusters observed as part of an ongoing project to study the formation history of M31 and its globular cluster population. The data presented here were obtained with the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope, and are analyzed using a new integrated light spectra analysis method that we have developed. In these clusters, we measure abundances for Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Y, and Ba, ages >10 Gyrs, and a range in [Fe/H] of -0.9 to -2.2. As is typical of Milky Way GCs, we find these M31 GCs to be enhanced in the alpha-elements Ca, Si, and Ti relative to Fe. We also find [Mg/Fe] to be low relative to other [alpha/Fe], and [Al/Fe] to be enhanced in the integrated light abundances. These results imply that abundances of Mg, Al (and likely O, Na) recovered from integrated light do display the inter- and intra-cluster abundance variations seen in individual Milky Way GC stars, and that special care should be taken in the future in interpreting low or high resolution integrated light abundances of globular clusters that are based on Mg-dominated absorption features. Fe-peak and the neutron-capture elements Ba and Y also follow Milky Way abundance trends. We also present high-precision velocity dispersion measurements for all 5 M31 GCs, as well as independent constraints on the reddening toward the clusters from our analysis.
