Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on (110)-oriented thin films of Ca-overdoped Y$_{0.95}$Ca$_{0.05}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-delta}$ at 4.2K, to probe the local evolution of Andreev$-$Saint-James surface states in a c-axis magnetic field. In zero field, we observed conductance spectra with spontaneously-split peaks and spectra with unsplit zero-bias peaks. The former showed enhanced splitting with field, and the latter showed threshold splitting above finite fields. Although both field evolutions can be described in terms of screening and orbital supercurrents, within the framework of $dpm ialpha$ pairing ($d$=$d_{x^2-y^2}$; $alpha$=$d_{xy}$,$s$), the enhanced splitting is consistent with only the $d$ + $ialpha$ state. Our results have direct implications on the stability of broken time-reversal symmetry in cuprate superconductors.

Unique superconductivity at surfaces/interfaces, as exemplified by LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, and the high transition temperature in ultrathin FeSe films, have triggered intense debates on how superconductivity is affected in atomic and electronic rec onstructions. The surface of superconducting cubic spinel oxide LiTi2O4 is another interesting system because its inherent surface electronic and atomic reconstructions add complexity to superconducting properties. Investigations of such surfaces are hampered by the lack of single crystals or high-quality thin films. Here, using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we report an unexpected small superconducting energy gap and a long coherence length on the surface of LiTi2O4 (111) epitaxial thin films. Furthermore, we find that a pseudogap opening at the Fermi energy modifies the surface superconductivity. Our results open an avenue, exploring anomalous superconductivity on the surface of cubic transition-metal oxides where the electronic states are spontaneously modulated with involving rich many-body interactions.
The combination of electronic correlations and Fermi surfaces with multiple nesting vectors can lead to the appearance of complex multi-Q magnetic ground states, hosting unusual states such as chiral density-waves and quantum Hall insulators. Disting uishing single-Q and multi-Q magnetic phases is however a notoriously difficult experimental problem. Here we propose theoretically that the local density of states near a magnetic impurity, whose orientation may be controlled by an external magnetic field, can be used to map out the detailed magnetic configuration of an itinerant system and distinguish unambiguously between single-Q and multi-Q phases. We demonstrate this concept by computing and contrasting the LDOS near a magnetic impurity embedded in three different magnetic ground states relevant to iron-based superconductors -- one single-Q and two double-Q phases. Our results open a promising avenue to investigate complex magnetic configurations in itinerant systems via standard scanning tunneling spectroscopy, without requiring spin-resolved capability.

We study dynamic fluctuation effects of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}$ thin films in zero field around $T_c$ by doing frequency-dependent microwave conductivity measurements at different powers. The length scales probed in the experiments are varied systemat ically allowing us to analyze data which are not affected by the finite thickness of the films, and to observe single-parameter scaling. DC current-voltage characteristics have also been measured to independently probe fluctuations in the same samples. The combination of DC and microwave measurements allows us to precisely determine critical parameters. Our results give a dynamical scaling exponent $z=1.55pm0.15$, which is consistent with model E-dynamics.
Disordered thin films close to the superconducting-insulating phase transition (SIT) hold the key to understanding quantum phase transition in strongly correlated materials. The SIT is governed by superconducting quantum fluctuations, which can be re vealed for example by tunneling measurements. These experiments detect a spectral gap, accompanied by suppressed coherence peaks that do not fit the BCS prediction. To explain these observations, we consider the effect of finite-range superconducting fluctuations on the density of states, focusing on the insulating side of the SIT. We perform a controlled diagrammatic resummation and derive analytic expressions for the tunneling differential conductance. We find that short-range superconducting fluctuations suppress the coherence peaks, even in the presence of long-range correlations. Our approach offers a quantitative description of existing measurements on disordered thin films and accounts for tunneling spectra with suppressed coherence peaks observed, for example, in the pseudo gap regime of high-temperature superconductors.
We report a study of the microwave conductivity of electron-doped Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-delta}$ superconducting thin films using a cavity perturbation technique. The relative frequency shifts obtained for the samples placed at a maximum elect ric field location in the cavity are treated using the high conductivity limit presented recently by Peligrad $textit{et}$ $textit{al.}$ Using two resonance modes, TE$_{102}$ (16.5 GHz) and TE$_{101}$ (13 GHz) of the same cavity, only one adjustable parameter $Gamma$ is needed to link the frequency shifts of an empty cavity to the ones of a cavity loaded with a perfect conductor. Moreover, by studying different sample configurations, we can relate the substrate effects on the frequency shifts to a scaling factor. These procedures allow us to extract the temperature dependence of the complex penetration depth and the complex microwave conductivity of two films with different quality. Our data confirm that all the physical properties of the superconducting state are consistent with an order parameter with lines of nodes. Moreover, we demonstrate the high sensitivity of these properties on the quality of the films.
