Context. IC 1396N is a bright-rimmed cloud associated with an intermediate-mass star-forming region, where a number of Herbig-Haro objects, H2 jet-like features, CO molecular outflows, and millimeter compact sources have been observed. Aims. To study in detail the complex structure of the IC 1396N core and the molecular outflows detected in the region and to reveal the presence of additional YSOs inside this globule. Methods. We carried out a deep survey of the IC 1396N region in the J, H, K broadband filters and deep high-angular resolution observations in the H2 narrowband filter with NICS at the TNG telescope. The completeness limits in the 2MASS standard are Ks~17.5, H~18.5 and J~19.5. Results. A total of 736 sources have been detected in all three bands within the area where the JHK images overlap. There are 128 sources detected only in HK, 67 detected only in K, and 79 detected only in H. We found only few objects exhibiting a Near-Infrared excess and no clear signs of clustering of sources towards the southern rim. In case of triggered star formation in the southern rim of the globule, this could be very recent, because it is not evidenced through Near-Infrared imaging alone. The H2 emission is complex and knotty and shows a large number of molecular hydrogen features spread over the region, testifying a recent star-formation activity throughout the whole globule. This emission is resolved into several chains or groups of knots that sometimes show a jet-like morphology. The shocked cloudlet model scenario previously proposed to explain the V-shaped morphology of the CO molecular outflow powered by the intermediate-mass YSO BIMA 2 seems to be confirmed by the presence of H2 emission at the position of the deflecting western clump. New possible flows have been discovered in the globule,

We have mapped in the 2.7 mm continuum and 12CO with the PdBI the IR-dark tail that crosses the IC 1396N globule from south to north, and is the most extincted part of this cloud. These observations have allowed us to distinguish all possible associa tions of molecular hydrogen emission features by revealing the presence of two well-collimated low-mass protostellar outflows at the northern part of the globule. The outflows are located almost in the plane of the sky and are colliding with each other towards the position of a strong 2.12 microns H2 line emission feature.
We present a study on the molecular gas towards a bright-rimmed cloud located to the north of the infrared dust bubble N30. Using the emission from the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J=3-2 line, together with infrared and radio continuum data, we characterized the bubble and the related molecular cloud. In addition, we show an analysis of the behaviour of the abundance ratio 13CO/C18O towards the bright-rimmed cloud, and we search for clues on recent star-formation.
The spatial structure of stellar populations with different chemical abundances in the Milky Way contains a wealth of information on Galactic evolution over cosmic time. We use data on 14,699 red-clump stars from the APOGEE survey, covering 4 kpc <~ R <~ 15 kpc, to determine the structure of mono-abundance populations (MAPs)---stars in narrow bins in [a/Fe] and [Fe/H]---accounting for the complex effects of the APOGEE selection function and the spatially-variable dust obscuration. We determine that all MAPs with enhanced [a/Fe] are centrally concentrated and are well-described as exponentials with a scale length of 2.2+/-0.2 kpc over the whole radial range of the disk. We discover that the surface-density profiles of low-[a/Fe] MAPs are complex: they do not monotonically decrease outwards, but rather display a peak radius ranging from ~5 kpc to ~13 kpc at low [Fe/H]. The extensive radial coverage of the data allows us to measure radial trends in the thickness of each MAP. While high-[a/Fe] MAPs have constant scale heights, low-[a/Fe] MAPs flare. We confirm, now with high-precision abundances, previous results that each MAP contains only a single vertical scale height and that low-[Fe/H], low-[a/Fe] and high-[Fe/H], high-[a/Fe] MAPs have intermediate (h_Z~300 to 600 pc) scale heights that smoothly bridge the traditional thin- and thick-disk divide. That the high-[a/Fe], thick disk components do not flare is strong evidence against their thickness being caused by radial migration. The correspondence between the radial structure and chemical-enrichment age of stellar populations is clear confirmation of the inside-out growth of galactic disks. The details of these relations will constrain the variety of physical conditions under which stars form throughout the MW disk.
We present the stellar population, using {it Gaia},DR2 parallax, kinematics, and photometry, of the young ($sim 100$~Myr), nearby ($sim 230$~pc) open cluster, Blanco1. A total of 644 member candidates are identified via the unsupervised machine learn ing method textsc{StarGO} to find the clustering in the 5-dimensional position and proper motion parameter ($X$, $Y$, $Z$, $mu_alpha cosdelta$, $mu_delta$) space. Within the tidal radius of $10.0 pm 0.3$~pc, there are 488 member candidates, 3 times more than those outside. A leading tail and a trailing tail, each of 50--60~pc in the Galactic plane, are found for the first time for this cluster, with stars further from the cluster center streaming away faster, manifest stellar stripping. Blanco1 has a total detected mass of $285pm32$~M$_odot $ with a mass function consistent with a slope of $alpha=1.35pm0.2$ in the sense of $dN/dm propto m^{-alpha}$, in the mass range of 0.25--2.51~M$_odot $, where $N$ is the number of members and $m$ is stellar mass. A Minimum Spanning Tree ($Lambda_{rm MSR}$) analysis shows the cluster to be moderately mass segregated among the most massive members ($gtrsim 1.4$~M$_odot$), suggesting an early stage of dynamical disintegration.
We observed 42 molecular condensations within previously identified bright-rimmed clouds in the ammonia rotational inversion lines NH3 (1,1), (2,2), (3,3) and (4,4) using the Green Bank Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia. Using the relative peaks of the ammonia lines and their hyperfine satellites we have determined important parameters of these clouds, including rotational temperatures and column densities. These observations confirm the presence of dense gas towards IRAS point sources detected at submillimetre wavelengths. Derived physical properties allow us to refine the sample of bright-rimmed clouds into those likely to be sites of star formation, triggered via the process of radiatively-driven implosion. An investigation of the physical properties of our sources show that triggered sources are host to greater turbulent velocity dispersions, likely indicative of shock motions within the cloud material. These may be attributed to the passage of triggered shocks or simply the association of outflow activity with the sources. In all, we have refined the Sugitani et al. (1991) catalogue to 15 clouds which are clearly star-forming and influenced by external photoionisation-induced shocks. These sources may be said, with high confidence, to represent the best examples of triggering within bright-rimmed clouds.
