We report Raman measurements on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d single crystals which allow us to quantitavely evaluate the doping dependence of the density of Cooper pairs in the superconducting state. We show that the drastic loss of Cooper pairs in the antinodal region as the doping level is reduced, is concomitant with a deep alteration of the quasiparticles dynamic above Tc and consistent with a pseudogap which competes with superconductivity. Our data also reveal that the overall density of Cooper pairs evolves with doping, distinctly from the superfluid density above the doping level pc=0.2.

A new type of Kondo effect peculiar to unconventional superconductors is studied theoretically by using the Wilsons numerical renormalization group method. In this case, an angular momentum of a Cooper pair plays an important role in the Kondo effect . It produces multichannel exchange couplings with a local spin. Here we focus on a $p_x +i p_y$-wave state which is a full gap system. The calculated impurity susceptibility shows that the local spin is almost quenched by the Kondo effect in the strong coupling region ($T_{rm K}/Delta to infty$), while the ground state is always a spin doublet over all the $T_{rm K}/Delta$ region. Here $T_{rm K}$ and $Delta$ are the Kondo temperature and the superconducting energy gap, respectively. This is different from the s-wave pairing case where the Kondo singlet is realized for large $T_{rm K}/Delta$ values. The strong coupling analysis shows that the $p_x +i p_y$-wave Cooper pair is connected to the Kondo singlet via the orbital dynamics of the paired electrons, generating the spin of the ground state. This type of Kondo effect reflects the symmetry of the conduction electron system.
For YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+delta} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 superconductors, electronic Raman scattering from high- and low-energy excitations has been studied in relation to the hole doping level, temperature, and energy of the incident photons. For underdoped s uperconductors, it is concluded that short range antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations persist with hole doping and doped single holes are incoherent in the AF environment. Above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T_c the system exhibits a sharp Raman resonance of B_1g symmetry and about 75 meV energy and a pseudogap for electron-hole excitations below 75 meV, a manifestation of a partially coherent state forming from doped incoherent quasi-particles. The occupancy of the coherent state increases with cooling until phase ordering at T_c produces a global SC state.
Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d and Bi2-yPbySr2-xLaxCuO6+d high-Tc superconductors in a wide doping range from overdoped to heavily underdoped were studied by X-ray absorption and photo-emission spectroscopy. The hole concentration p was determined by an analysis of the Cu L3-absorption edge. Besides the occupied density of states derived from photoemission, the un-occupied density of states was determined from the prepeak of the O K-absorption edge. Both, the occupied as well as the unoccupied density of states reveal the same dependence on hole doping, i.e. a continuous increase with increasing doping in the hole underdoped region and a constant density in the hole overdoped region. By comparing these results of single-layer BSLCO with previous results on single-layer LSCO it could be argued that besides the localized holes on Cu sites the CuO2-planes consist of two types of doped holes, from which the so-called mobile holes determine the intensity of the prepeak of the O 1s absorption edge.

The unconventional normal-state properties of the cuprates are often discussed in terms of emergent electronic order that onsets below a putative critical doping of xc = 0.19. Charge-density wave (CDW) correlations represent one such order; however, experimental evidence for such order generally spans a limited range of doping that falls short of the critical value xc, leading to questions regarding its essential relevance. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to demonstrate that CDW correlations in La2-xSrxCuO4 persist up to a doping of at least x = 0.21. The correlations show strong changes through the superconducting transition, but no obvious discontinuity through xc = 0.19, despite changes in Fermi surface topology and electronic transport at this doping. These results demonstrate the interaction between CDWs and superconductivity even in overdoped cuprates and prompt a reconsideration of the role of CDW correlations in the high-temperature cuprate phase diagram.

We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$(Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$)Cu$_2$O$_{8+delta}$ single crystals at different doping levels. The dependence of the spectra on doping and on incoming photon energy is analyzed for different polariz ation geometries, in the superconducting and in the normal state. We find the scaling behavior of the superconductivity pair-breaking peak with the carrier concentration to be very different in B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ geometries. Also, we do not find evidence of any significant variation of the lineshape of the spectra in the overdoped region in both symmetries, while we observe a reduction of the intensity in B$_{2g}$ upon decreasing photon energies. The normal state data are analyzed in terms of the memory-function approach. The quasiparticle relaxation rates in the two symmetries display a dependence on energy and temperature which varies with the doping level.
