We measure by inelastic neutron scattering the spin excitation spectra as a function of applied magnetic field in the quantum spin-ladder material (C5H12N)2CuBr4. Discrete magnon modes at low fields in the quantum disordered phase and at high fields in the saturated phase contrast sharply with a spinon continuum at intermediate fields characteristic of the Luttinger-liquid phase. By tuning the magnetic field, we drive the fractionalization of magnons into spinons and, in this deconfined regime, observe both commensurate and incommensurate continua.

The effect of disorder is studied on the field-induced quantum phase transition in the frustrated spin-ladder compound H8C4SO2Cu2(Cl[1-x]Brx)4 using bulk magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. The parent material (x=0) is a quantum spin liquid, whi ch in applied fields is known to form a magnon condensate with long-range helimagnetic order. We show that bond randomness introduced by a chemical substitution on the non-magnetic halogene site destroys this phase transition at very low concentrations, already for x=0.01. The extreme fragility of the magnon condensate is attributed to random frustration in the incommensurate state.
We present the theory of dynamical spin-response for the Kitaev honeycomb model, obtaining exact results for the structure factor (SF) in gapped and gapless, Abelian and non-Abelian quantum spin-liquid (QSL) phases. We also describe the advances in m ethodology necessary to compute these results. The structure factor shows signatures of spin-fractionalization into emergent quasiparticles -- Majorana fermions and fluxes of $Z_2$ gauge field. In addition to a broad continuum from spin-fractionalization, we find sharp ($delta$-function) features in the response. These arise in two distinct ways: from excited states containing only (static) fluxes and no (mobile) fermions; and from excited states in which fermions are bound to fluxes. The SF is markedly different in Abelian and non-Abelian QSLs, and bound fermion-flux composites appear only in the non-Abelian phase.

We present a comprehensive study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetic structure and spin dynamics in the spin-1/2 coupled ladder compound C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$. The applied pressure is demonstrated as a parameter to effectively tune the exchange interactions in the spin Hamiltonian without inducing a structural transition. The single-crystal heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the N$rm acute{e}$el ordered state breaks down at and above a critical pressure $P_{rm c}$$sim$1.0 GPa through a continuous quantum phase transition. The thorough analysis of the critical exponents indicates that such transition with a large anomalous exponent $eta$ into a quantum-disordered state cannot be described by the classic Landaus paradigm. Using inelastic neutron scattering and quantum Monte Carlo methods, the high-pressure regime is proposed as a $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid phase in terms of characteristic fully gapped vison-like and fractionalized excitations in distinct scattering channels.
The magnetic excitations of the quasi-2D spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice Cs2CuCl4 are explored throughout the 2D Brillouin zone using inelastic neutron scattering. In the spin liquid phase above the transition to magnetic order extended excitation continua are observed, characteristic of fractionalization of S=1 spin waves into pairs of deconfined S=1/2 spinons and the hallmark of a resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state. The weak inter-layer couplings stabilize incommensurate spiral order at low temperatures and in this phase sharp magnons carrying a small part of the total scattering weight are observed at low energies below the continuum lower boundary. Linear spin-wave theory including one- and two-magnon processes can describe the sharp magnon excitation, but not the dominant continuum scattering, which instead is well described by a parameterized two-spinon cross-section. Those results suggest a cross-over in the nature of excitations from S=1 spin waves at low energies to S=1/2 spinons at medium to high energies, which could be understood if Cs2CuCl4 was in the close proximity of a transition between a fractional spin liquid and a magnetically-ordered phase.

We have used a combination of neutron resonant spin-echo and triple-axis spectroscopies to determine the energy and linewidth of the magnon resonance in IPA-Cu(Cl$_{0.95}$Br$_{0.05}$)$_3$, a model spin-1/2 ladder antiferromagnet where Br substitution induces bond randomness. We find that the bond defects induce a blueshift, $delta Delta$, and broadening, $delta Gamma$, of the magnon gap excitation compared to the pure compound. At temperatures exceeding the energy scale of the inter-ladder exchange interactions, $delta Delta$ and $delta Gamma$ are temperature independent within the experimental error, in agreement with Matthiessens rule according to which magnon-defect scattering yields a temperature independent contribution to the magnon mean free path. Upon cooling, $delta Delta$ and $delta Gamma$ become temperature dependent and saturate at values lower than those observed at higher temperature, consistent with the crossover from one-dimensional to two-dimensional spin correlations with decreasing temperature previously observed in pure IPA-CuCl$_3$. These results indicate limitations in the applicability of Matthiessens rule for magnon scattering in low-dimensional magnets.
