Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are quasi-one-dimensional systems with poor Coulomb screening and enhanced electron-phonon interaction, and are good candidates for excitons and exciton-phonon couplings in metallic state. Here we report back scattering reflection experiments on individual metallic SWCNTs. An exciton-phonon sideband separated by 0.19 eV from the first optical transition peak is observed in a metallic SWCNT of chiral index (13,10), which provides clear evidences of excitons in metallic SWCNTs. A static dielectric constant of 10 is estimated from the reflectance spectrum.

We report a measurement on quantum capacitance of individual semiconducting and small band gap SWNTs. The observed quantum capacitance is remarkably smaller than that originating from density of states and it implies a strong electron correlation in SWNTs.

The dynamical conductance of electrically contacted single-walled carbon nanotubes is measured from dc to 10 GHz as a function of source-drain voltage in both the low-field and high-field limits. The ac conductance of the nanotube itself is found to be equal to the dc conductance over the frequency range studied for tubes in both the ballistic and diffusive limit. This clearly demonstrates that nanotubes can carry high-frequency currents at least as well as dc currents over a wide range of operating conditions. Although a detailed theoretical explanation is still lacking, we present a phenomenological model of the ac impedance of a carbon nanotube in the presence of scattering that is consistent with these results.
We characterize the terahertz detection mechanism in antenna-coupled metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes. At low temperature, 4.2 K, a peak in the low-frequency differential resistance is observed at zero bias current due to non-Ohmic contacts. T his electrical contact nonlinearity gives rise to the measured terahertz response. By modeling each nanotube contact as a nonlinear resistor in parallel with a capacitor, we determine an upper bound for the value of the contact capacitance that is smaller than previous experimental estimates. The small magnitude of this contact capacitance has favorable implications for the use of carbon nanotubes in high-frequency device applications.
We have computed the adsorption of Krypton in a closed single-walled carbon nanotube using the method of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo. Our results indicate evidence of an incommensurate solid formed at high pressure and low temperature (T<85K), before the formation of a second layer. The solid melts above that temperature. Our simulations are in good agreement with novel experimental results for adsorption in individual carbon nanotubes.
The absorption cross section of highly luminescent individual single-walled carbon nanotubes is determined using time-resolved and cw luminescence spectroscopy. A mean value of 1x10-17 cm2 per carbon atom is obtained for (6,5) tubes excited at their second optical transition, and corroborated by single tube photothermal absorption measurements. Biexponential luminescence decays are systematically observed, with short and long lifetimes around 45 and 250 ps. This behavior is attributed to the band edge exciton fine structure with a dark level lying a few meV below a bright one.
