We present very sensitive polarimetry of 55 Cnc and tau Boo in an attempt to detect the partially polarised reflected light from the planets orbiting these two stars. 55 Cnc is orbited by a hot Neptune planet (55 Cnc e) at 0.038 AU, a hot Jupiter planet (55 Cnc b) at 0.11 AU, and at least 3 more distant planets. The polarisation of this system is very stable, showing no sign of the periodic variations that would be expected if a short period planet were detected. The measured standard deviation of the night averaged Stokes Q/I and U/I parameters is 2.2x10^{-6}. We derive upper limits on the geometric albedo, A_G and planetary radius using Monte Carlo multiple scattering simulations of a simple model atmosphere. We assume Rayleigh-like scattering (scaled by the maximum polarisation, p_m at 90 degrees) and pressure insensitive extinction. Atmospheres in which multiple scattering plays only a small role have an almost linear relation between polarisation and A_G. In this case, the 4 sigma upper limits is A_G<0.13(R/1.2 R_{Jup})^{-2}p_m^{-1} for 55 Cnc e. This suggests that 55 Cnc e is relatively small and not a pure H-He planet. The data do not give a useful upper limit for 55 Cnc b. tau Boo is orbited by an unusually massive hot Jupiter planet. The standard deviation in the night averaged Stokes Q/I and U/I polarisation parameters is 5.1x10^{-6}. The 4 sigma upper limit is A_G<0.37(R/1.2 R_{Jup})^{-2}p_m^{-1} for tau Boo b. This extends the similar upper limits reported previously for this planet to longer wavelengths. The larger scatter in the tau Boo data may be due to the spot activity detected photometrically by the MOST satellite. These results contrast markedly with the recent claim of a 3 sigma detection of a periodic polarisation signal from HD189733 with amplitude P=2x10^{-4}, attributed to the planet HD189733 b.

Orbiting a bright, nearby star the 55 Cnc system offers a rare opportunity to study a multiplanet system that has a wide range of planetary masses and orbital distances. Using two decades of photometry and spectroscopy data, we have measured the rota tion of the host star and its solar-like magnetic cycle. Accounting for this cycle in our velocimetric analysis of the system allows us to revise the properties of the outermost giant planet and its four planetary companions. The innermost planet 55 Cnc e is an unusually close-in super-Earth, whose transits have allowed for detailed follow-up studies. Recent observations favor the presence of a substantial atmosphere yet its composition, and the nature of the planet, remain unknown. We combined our derived planet mass (Mp = 8.0+-0.3 Mearth) with refined measurement of its optical radius derived from HST/STIS observations (Rp = 1.88+-0.03 Rearth over 530-750nm) to revise the density of 55 Cnc e (rho = 6.7+-0.4 g cm-3). Based on these revised properties we have characterized possible interiors of 55 Cnc e using a generalized Bayesian model. We confirm that the planet is likely surrounded by a heavyweight atmosphere, contributing a few percents of the planet radius. While we cannot exclude the presence of a water layer underneath the atmosphere, this scenario is unlikely given the observations of the planet across the entire spectrum and its strong irradiation. Follow-up observations of the system in photometry and in spectroscopy over different time-scales are needed to further investigate the nature and origin of this iconic super-Earth.
We present Rossiter-McLaughlin observations of the transiting super-Earth 55 Cnc e collected during six transit events between January 2012 and November 2013 with HARPS and HARPS-N. We detect no radial-velocity signal above 35 cm/s (3-sigma) and conf ine the stellar v sin i to 0.2 +/- 0.5 km/s. The star appears to be a very slow rotator, producing a very low amplitude Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. Given such a low amplitude, the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect of 55 Cnc e is undetected in our data, and any spin-orbit angle of the system remains possible. We also performed Doppler tomography and reach a similar conclusion. Our results offer a glimpse of the capacity of future instrumentation to study low amplitude Rossiter-McLaughlin effects produced by super-Earths.
The High Optical Resolution Spectrograph (HORuS) is a new high-resolution echelle spectrograph available on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We report on the first HORuS observations of a transit of the super-Earth planet 55 Cnc e. We inves tigate the presence of Na I and H$alpha$ in its transmission spectrum and explore the capabilities of HORuS for planetary transmission spectroscopy. Our methodology leads to residuals in the difference spectrum between the in-transit and out-of-transit spectra for the Na I doublet lines of (3.4 $pm$ 0.4) $times$ 10$^{-4}$, which sets an upper limit to the detection of line absorption from the planetary atmosphere that is one order of magnitude more stringent that those reported in the literature. We demonstrate that we are able to reach the photon-noise limit in the residual spectra using HORuS to a degree that we would be able to easily detect giant planets with larger atmospheres. In addition, we modelled the structure, chemistry and transmission spectrum of 55 Cnc e using state-of-the-art open source tools.
Context. 55 Cancri hosts five known exoplanets, most notably the hot super-Earth 55 Cnc e, which is one of the hottest known transiting super-Earths. Aims. Due to the short orbital separation and host star brightness, 55 Cnc e provides one of the bes t opportunities for studying star-planet interactions (SPIs). We aim to understand possible SPIs in this system, which requires a detailed understanding of the stellar magnetic field and wind impinging on the planet. Methods. Using spectropolarimetric observations, and Zeeman Doppler Imaging, we derive a map of the large-scale stellar magnetic field. We then simulate the stellar wind starting from the magnetic field map, using a 3D MHD model. Results. The map of the large-scale stellar magnetic field we derive has an average strength of 3.4 G. The field has a mostly dipolar geometry, with the dipole tilted by 90 degrees with respect to the rotation axis, and dipolar strength of 5.8 G at the magnetic pole. The wind simulations based on this magnetic geometry lead us to conclude that 55 Cnc e orbits inside the Alfven surface of the stellar wind, implying that effects from the planet on the wind can propagate back to the stellar surface and result in SPI.

We present archival Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of two exoplanetary systems, $tau$ Bootis, and 55 Cancri, at 610 MHz and 150 MHz, respectively. Theoretical models predict these systems to have some of the highest expected flux densities at radio wavelengths. Both $tau$ Bootis and 55 Cancri have been previously observed at low frequency ($sim$ 30 MHz) with Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) (Turner et al. 2020). $tau$ Bootis shows tentative signatures of circularly polarized emission at 30 MHz, while no emission was detected from 55 Cancri. We do not detect radio emission from both the systems, but the GMRT observations set $3sigma$ upper limits of 0.6 mJy at 610 MHz for $tau$ Bootis and 4.6 mJy at 150 MHz for 55 Cancri. The sensitivity achieved at 610 MHz in these observations is comparable to some of the deepest images of an exoplanet field.
