A rich variety of specific multidomain textures recently observed in antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy include regular (equilibrium) multidomain states as well as different types of topological magnetic defects. Within a phenomenological theory we have classified and analyzed the possible magnetic defects in the antiferromagnetic ground state and determine their structures. We have derived the optimal sizes of the defects as functions of the antiferromagnetic exchange, the applied magnetic field, and geometrical parameters of the multilayer. The calculated magnetic phase diagrams show the existence regions for all types of magnetic defects. Experimental investigations of the remanent states (observed after different magnetic pre-history) in [Co/Pt]/Ru multilayers with wedged Co layers reveal a corresponding succession of different magnetic defect domain types.

In antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy unusual multidomain textures can be stabilized due to a close competition between long-range demagnetization fields and short-range interlayer exchange coupling. In particul ar, the formation and evolution of specific topologically stable planar defects within the antiferromagnetic ground state, i.e. wall-like structures with a ferromagnetic configuration extended over a finite width, explain configurational hysteresis phenomena recently observed in [Co/Pt(Pd)]/Ru and [Co/Pt]/NiO multilayers. Within a phenomenological theory, we have analytically derived the equilibrium sizes of these ferroband defects as functions of the antiferromagnetic exchange, a bias magnetic field, and geometrical parameters of the multilayers. In the magnetic phase diagram, the existence region of the ferrobands mediates between the regions of patterns with sharp antiferromagnetic domain walls and regular arrays of ferromagnetic stripes. The theoretical results are supported by magnetic force microscopy images of the remanent states observed in [Co/Pt]/Ru.
Antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy, as [CoPt]/Ru, Co/Ir, Fe/Au, display ferromagnetic stripe phases as the ground states. It is theoretically shown that the antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange causes a relative shift of domains in adjacent layers. This ``exchange shift is responsible for several recently observed effects: an anomalous broadening of domain walls, the formation of so-called ``tiger-tail patterns, and a ``mixed state of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic domains in [CoPt]/Ru multilayers. The derived analitical relations between the values of the shift and the strength of antiferromagnetic coupling provide an effective method for a quantitative determination of the interlayer exchange interactions.
Stripe domains are studied in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy films nanostructured with a periodic thickness modulation that induces the lateral modulation of both stripe periods and inplane magnetization. The resulting system is the 2D equivalent of a strained superlattice with properties controlled by interfacial misfit strain within the magnetic stripe structure and shape anisotropy. This allows us to observe, experimentally for the first time, the continuous structural transformation of a grain boundary in this 2D magnetic crystal in the whole angular range. The magnetization reversal process can be tailored through the effect of misfit strain due to the coupling between disclinations in the magnetic stripe pattern and domain walls in the in-plane magnetization configuration.
Magnetic lateral multilayers have been fabricated on weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy amorphous Nd-Co films in order to perform a systematic study on the conditions for controlled nucleation of topological defects within their magnetic stripe d omain pattern. A lateral thickness modulation of period $w$ is defined on the nanostructured samples that, in turn, induces a lateral modulation of both magnetic stripe domain periods $lambda$ and average in-plane magnetization component $M_{inplane}$. Depending on lateral multilayer period and in-plane applied field, thin and thick regions switch independently during in-plane magnetization reversal and domain walls are created within the in-plane magnetization configuration coupled to variable angle grain boundaries and disclinations within the magnetic stripe domain patterns. This process is mainly driven by the competition between rotatable anisotropy (that couples the magnetic stripe pattern to in-plane magnetization) and in-plane shape anisotropy induced by the periodic thickness modulation. However, as the structural period $w$ becomes comparable to magnetic stripe period $lambda$, the nucleation of topological defects at the interfaces between thin and thick regions is hindered by a size effect and stripe domains in the different thickness regions become strongly coupled.

For antiferromagnetically coupled Fe/Cr multilayers the low field contribution to the resistivity, which is caused by the domain walls, is strongly enhanced at low temperatures. The low temperature resistivity varies according to a power law with the exponent about 0.7 to 1. This behavior can not be explained assuming ballistic electron transport through the domain walls. It is necessary to invoke the suppression of anti-localization effects (positive quantum correction to conductivity) by the nonuniform gauge fields caused by the domain walls.
