A systematic construction of a Lax pair and an infinite set of conservation laws for the Ernst equation is described. The matrix form of this equation is rewritten as a differential ideal of gl(2,R)-valued differential forms, and its symmetry condition is expressed as an exterior equation which is linear in the symmetry characteristic and has the form of a conservation law. By means of a recursive process, an infinite collection of such laws is then obtained, and the conserved charges are used to derive a linear exterior equation whose components constitute a Lax pair.

A new Lax pair for the sixth Painleve equation $P_{VI}$ is constructed in the framework of the loop algebra $mathfrak{so}(8)[z,z^{-1}]$. The whole affine Weyl group symmetry of $P_{VI}$ is interpreted as gauge transformations of the corresponding linear problem.
Nonlocally related partial differential equation (PDE) systems are useful in the analysis of a given PDE system. It is known that each local conservation law of a given PDE system systematically yields a nonlocally related system. In this paper, a ne w and complementary method for constructing nonlocally related systems is introduced. In particular, it is shown that each point symmetry of a given PDE system systematically yields a nonlocally related system. Examples include applications to nonlinear diffusion equations, nonlinear wave equations and nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations. As a consequence, previously unknown nonlocal symmetries are exhibited for two examples of nonlinear wave equations. Moreover, since the considered nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations have no local conservation laws, previous methods do not yield nonlocally related systems for such equations.

A new approach leading to the formulation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for field theories is investigated within the framework of jet-bundles and multi-symplectic manifolds. An algorithm associating classes of solutions to given sets of boundary c onditions of the field equations is provided. The paper also puts into evidence the intrinsic limits of the Hamilton-Jacobi method as an algorithm to determine families of solutions of the field equations, showing how the choice of the boundary data is often limited by compatibility conditions.
We consider the half-wave maps equation $$ partial_t vec{S} = vec{S} wedge | abla| vec{S}, $$ where $vec{S}= vec{S}(t,x)$ takes values on the two-dimensional unit sphere $mathbb{S}^2$ and $x in mathbb{R}$ (real line case) or $x in mathbb{T}$ (periodi c case). This an energy-critical Hamiltonian evolution equation recently introduced in cite{LS,Zh}, which formally arises as an effective evolution equation in the classical and continuum limit of Haldane-Shastry quantum spin chains. We prove that the half-wave maps equation admits a Lax pair and we discuss some analytic consequences of this finding. As a variant of our arguments, we also obtain a Lax pair for the half-wave maps equation with target $mathbb{H}^2$ (hyperbolic plane).
We present a novel computational methodology for solving the scalar nonlinear Helmholtz equation (NLH) that governs the propagation of laser light in Kerr dielectrics. The methodology addresses two well-known challenges in nonlinear optics: Singular behavior of solutions when the scattering in the medium is assumed predominantly forward (paraxial regime), and the presence of discontinuities in the % linear and nonlinear optical properties of the medium. Specifically, we consider a slab of nonlinear material which may be grated in the direction of propagation and which is immersed in a linear medium as a whole. The key components of the methodology are a semi-compact high-order finite-difference scheme that maintains accuracy across the discontinuities and enables sub-wavelength resolution on large domains at a tolerable cost, a nonlocal two-way artificial boundary condition (ABC) that simultaneously facilitates the reflectionless propagation of the outgoing waves and forward propagation of the given incoming waves, and a nonlinear solver based on Newtons method. The proposed methodology combines and substantially extends the capabilities of our previous techniques built for 1Dand for multi-D. It facilitates a direct numerical study of nonparaxial propagation and goes well beyond the approaches in the literature based on the augmented paraxial models. In particular, it provides the first ever evidence that the singularity of the solution indeed disappears in the scalar NLH model that includes the nonparaxial effects. It also enables simulation of the wavelength-width spatial solitons, as well as of the counter-propagating solitons.
