We study the effect of quantum motion in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer where ultracold, two-level atoms cross a $pi/2 $-$pi $-$pi/2$ configuration of separated, laser illuminated regions. Explicit and exact expressions are obtained for transmission amplitudes of monochromatic, incident atomic waves using recurrence relations which take into account all possible paths: the direct ones usually considered in the simple semiclassical treatment, but including quantum motion corrections, and the paths in which the atoms are repeatedly reflected at the fields.

We consider an oscillating micromirror replacing one of the two fixed mirrors of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In this ideal optical set-up the quantum oscillator is subjected to the radiation pressure interaction of travelling light waves, no cavit y is involved. This configuration shows that squeezed light can be generated by pure scattering on a quantum system, without involving a cavity. The squeezing can be detected at the output ports of the interferometer either by direct detection or by measuring the spectrum of the difference current. We use the Hudson-Parthasarathy equation to model the global evolution. It can describe the scattering of photons and the resulting radiation pressure interaction on the quantum oscillator. It allows to consider also the interaction with a thermal bath. In this way we have a unitary dynamics giving the evolution of oscillator and fields. The Bose fields of quantum stochastic calculus and the related generalized Weyl operators allow to describe the whole optical circuit. By working in the Heisenberg picture, the quantum Langevin equations for position and momentum and the output fields arise, which are used to describe the monitoring in continuous time of the light at the output ports. In the case of strong laser and weak radiation pressure interaction highly non-classical light is produced, and this can be revealed either by direct detection (a negative Mandel Q-parameter is found), either by the intensity spectrum of the difference current of two photodetector; in the second case a nearly complete cancellation of the shot noise can be reached. In this last case it appears that the Mach-Zehnder configuration together with the detection of the difference current corresponds to an homodyne detection scheme, so that we can say that the apparatus is measuring the spectrum of squeezing.
We have constructed an atom interferometer of the Mach-Zehnder type, operating with a supersonic beam of lithium. Atom diffraction uses Bragg diffraction on laser standing waves. With first order diffraction, our apparatus has given a large signal an d a very good fringe contrast (74%), which we believe to be the highest ever observed with atom interferometers. This apparatus will be applied to high sensitivity measurements
We theoretically studied the quantum Cram{e}r-Rao bound of an actively correlated Mach-Zehnder interferometer (ACMZI), where the quantum Fisher information obtained by the phase-averaging method can give the proper phase-sensing limit without any ext ernal phase reference. We numerically calculate the phase sensitivities with the method of homodyne detection and intensity detection in the presence of losses. Under lossless and very low loss conditions, the ACMZI is operated in a balanced case to beat the standard quantum limit (SQL). As the loss increases, the reduction in sensitivity increases. However within a certain range, we can adjust the gain parameters of the beam recombination process to reduce the reduction in sensitivity and realize the sensitivity can continue to beat the SQL in an unbalanced situation. Our scheme provides an optimization method of phase estimation in the presence of losses.
A nonlinear phase shift is introduced to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), and we present a scheme for enhancing the phase sensitivity. In our scheme, one input port of a standard MZI is injected with a coherent state and the other input port is i njected with one mode of a two-mode squeezed-vacuum state. The final interference output of the MZI is detected with the method of active correlation output readout. Based on the optimal splitting ratio of beam splitters, the phase sensitivity can beat the standard quantum limit and approach the quantum Cram{e}r-Rao bound. The effects of photon loss on phase sensitivity are discussed. Our scheme can also provide some estimates for units of $chi^{(3)}$, due to the relation between the nonlinear phase shift and the susceptibility $chi^{(3)}$ of the Kerr medium.

Mach-Zehnder interferometer is a common device in quantum phase estimation and the photon losses in it are an important issue for achieving a high phase accuracy. Here we thoroughly discuss the precision limit of the phase in the Mach-Zehnder interfe rometer with a coherent state and a superposition of coherent states as input states. By providing a general analytical expression of quantum Fisher information, the phase-matching condition and optimal initial parity are given. Especially, in the photon loss scenario, the sensitivity behaviors are analyzed and specific strategies are provided to restore the phase accuracies for symmetric and asymmetric losses.
