The single-molecule magnet $mathrm{[Ni(hmp)(MeOH)Cl]_4}$ is studied using both density functional theory (DFT) and the DFT+U method, and the results are compared. By incorporating a Hubbard-U like term for both the nickel and oxygen atoms, the experimentally determined ground state is successfully obtained, and the exchange coupling constants derived from the DFT+U calculation agree with experiment very well. The results show that the nickel 3d and oxygen 2p electrons in this molecule are strongly correlated, and thus the inclusion of on-site Coulomb energies is crucial to obtaining the correct results.

We present a method for precisely measuring the tunnel splitting in single-molecule magnets using electron-spin resonance, and use these measurements to precisely and independently determine the underlying transverse anisotropy parameter, given a cer tain class of transitions. By diluting samples of the SMM Ni$_4$ via co-crystallization in a diamagnetic isostructural analogue we obtain markedly narrower resonance peaks than are observed in undiluted samples. Using custom loop-gap resonators we measure the transitions at several frequencies, allowing a precise determination of the tunnel splitting. Because the transition under investigation occurs at zero field, and arises due to a first-order perturbation from the transverse anisotropy, we can determine the magnitude of this anisotropy independent of any other Hamiltonian parameters. This method can be applied to other SMMs with tunnel splittings arising from first-order transverse anisotropy perturbations.
Berry phase effects in spin systems lead to the suppression of tunneling effects when different tunneling paths interfere destructively. Such effects have been seen in several single-molecule magnets (SMMs) through measurements of magnetization dynam ics, where the experimental signal may arise from the contributions of numerous energy levels. Here we present experimental measurements of Berry phase interference effects that are determined through electron-spin resonance on a four-fold symmetric SMM. Specifically, we measure transitions between tunnel-split excited states in the Ni$_4$ SMM in the presence of a transverse field in the hard plane of the crystalline sample. By using a home-built rotation apparatus, the direction of the sample can be changed textit{in situ} so that that the field direction can be swept through the entire hard plane of the sample. When the field is in certain directions in the plane, we observe a splitting of the transition, a hallmark of Berry phase interference. The experimental results are well reproduced by theoretical predictions, and fitting of the data provides information about the effects of dipolar interactions and sample misalignment.

The properties of condensed matter are determined by single-particle and collective excitations and their interactions. These quantum-mechanical excitations are characterized by an energy E and a momentum hbar k which are related through their disper sion E_k. The coupling of two excitations may lead to abrupt changes (kinks) in the slope of the dispersion. Such kinks thus carry important information about interactions in a many-body system. For example, kinks detected at 40-70 meV below the Fermi level in the electronic dispersion of high-temperature superconductors are taken as evidence for phonon or spin-fluctuation based pairing mechanisms. Kinks in the electronic dispersion at binding energies ranging from 30 to 800 meV are also found in various other metals posing questions about their origins. Here we report a novel, purely electronic mechanism yielding kinks in the electron dispersions. It applies to strongly correlated metals whose spectral function shows well separated Hubbard subbands and central peak as, for example, in transition metal-oxides. The position of the kinks and the energy range of validity of Fermi-liquid (FL) theory is determined solely by the FL renormalization factor and the bare, uncorrelated band structure. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments at binding energies outside the FL regime can thus provide new, previously unexpected information about strongly correlated electronic systems.

Magnetic excitations in a Ni$_4$ magnetic molecule were investigated by inelastic neutron scattering and bulk susceptibility ($chi_text{bulk}$) techniques. The magnetic excitation spectrum obtained from the inelastic neutron scattering experiments ex hibits three modes at energy transfers of $hbaromega=0.5$, 1.35, and 1.6 meV. We show that the energy, momentum, and temperature dependences of the inelastic neutron scattering data and $chi_text{bulk}$ can be well reproduced by an effective spin Hamiltonian consisted of intra-molecule exchange interactions, a single-ionic anisotropy, biquadratic interactions, and Zeeman term. Under a hydrostatic pressure, the bulk magnetization decreases with increasing pressure, which along with the biquadratic term indicates spin-lattice coupling present in this system.

The idea of exciton condensation in solids was introduced in 1960s with the analogy to superconductivity in mind. While exciton supercurrents have been realized only in artificial quantum-well structures so far, the application of the concept of exci tonic condensation to bulk solids leads to a rich spectrum of thermodynamic phases with diverse physical properties. In this review we discuss recent developments in the theory of exciton condensation in systems described by Hubbard-type models. In particular, we focus on the connections to their various strong-coupling limits that have been studied in other contexts, e.g., cold atoms physics. One of our goals is to provide a dictionary which would allow the reader to efficiently combine results obtained in these different fields.
