In a systematic study we investigate the effect of dopant level and hydration on the short-range structure of the proton conducting perovskite-type oxide BaIn_{x}Zr_{1-x}O_{3-x/2} (x = 0-0.75), using infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that doping leads to significant local distortions of the average cubic structure of these materials. By increasing the In concentration from x = 0 to x = 0.75 new bands appear and grow in intensity in both the IR and Raman spectra, showing that the local distortions become successively more and more pronounced. The structural distortions are largely uncorrelated to the presence of oxygen vacancies, but instead are mainly driven by the size difference between the In^{3+} and Zr^{4+} ions, which leads to displacements of the cations and to tilting of the (In/Zr)O_{6} octahedra. Based on our results, we suggest that there is a threshold between x = 0.10 and x = 0.25 where the local structural distortions propagate throughout the whole perovskite structure. Comparison of our spectroscopic data with the proton conductivity reported for the same materials indicates that the presence of extended structural distortions are favorable for fast proton transport.

We investigated the time-dependent polarization switching behaviors of (111)-preferred polycrystalline Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 thin films with various Zr concentrations. We could explain all the polarization switching behaviors well by assuming Lorentzian dis tributions in the logarithmic polarization switching time [Refer to J. Y. Jo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. (in press)]. Based on this analysis, we found that the Zr ion-substitution for Ti ions would induce broad distributions in the local field due to defect dipoles, which makes the ferroelectric domain switching occur more easily.
We present the electronic structure of Sr_{1-(x+y)}La_{x+y}Ti_{1-x}Cr_{x}O_{3} investigated by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. In the vicinity of Fermi level, it was found that the electronic structure were composed of a Cr 3d local state with the t_{2g}^{3} configuration and a Ti 3d itinerant state. The energy levels of these Cr and Ti 3d states are well interpreted by the difference of the charge-transfer energy of both ions. The spectral weight of the Cr 3d state is completely proportional to the spin concentration x irrespective of the carrier concentration y, indicating that the spin density can be controlled by x as desired. In contrast, the spectral weight of the Ti 3d state is not proportional to y, depending on the amount of Cr doping.
We report the detailed electronic structure of a hole-doped delafossite oxide CuCr_{1-x}Mg_{x}O_{2} (0 <= x <= 0.03) studied by photoemission spectroscopy (PES), soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and band-structure calculations within the loc al-density approximation +U (LDA+U) scheme. Cr/Cu 3p-3d resonant PES reveals that the near-Fermi-level leading structure has primarily the Cr 3d character with a minor contribution from the Cu 3d through Cu 3d-O 2p-Cr 3d hybridization, having good agreement with the band-structure calculations. This indicates that a doped hole will have primarily the Cr 3d character. Cr 2p PES and L-edge XAS spectra exhibit typical Cr^{3+} features for all x, while the Cu L-edge XAS spectra exhibited a systematic change with x. This indicates now that the Cu valence is monovalent at x=0 and the doped hole should have Cu 3d character. Nevertheless, we surprisingly observed two types of charge-transfer satellites that should be attributed to Cu^{+} (3d^{10}) and Cu^{2+} (3d^{9}) like initial states in Cu 2p-3d resonant PES spectrum for at x=0, while Cu 2p PES spectra with no doubt shows the Cu^{+} character even for the lightly doped samples. We propose that these contradictory results can be understood by introducing no only the Cu 4s state, but also finite Cu 3d,4s-Cr 3d charge transfer via O 2p states in the ground-state electronic configuration.
The scope of this article is to report very detailed results of the measurements of magnetic relaxation phenomena in the new Cu$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2.5}$O$_{4}$ nanoparticles and known CuFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ nanoparticles. The size of synthesized particles is (6. 5$pm $1.5)nm. Both samples show the superparamagnetic behaviour, with the well-defined phenomena of blocking of magnetic moment. This includes the splitting of zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetic moment curves, dynamical hysteresis, slow quasi-logarithmic relaxation of magnetic moment below blocking temperature. The scaling of the magnetic moment relaxation data at different temperatures confirms the applicability of the simple thermal relaxation model. The two copper-ferrites with similar structures show significantly different magnetic anisotropy density and other magnetic properties. Investigated systems exhibit the consistency of all obtained results.
We present low-temperature anelastic and dielectric spectroscopy measurements on the perovskite ionic conductor BaCe(1-x)Y(x)O(3-x/2) in the protonated, deuterated and outgassed states. Three main relaxation processes are ascribed to proton migration , reorientation about an Y dopant and tunneling around a same O atom. An additional relaxation maximum appears only in the dielectric spectrum around 60 K, and does not involve H motion, but may be of electronic origin, e.g. small polaron hopping. The peak at the lowest temperature, assigned to H tunneling, has been fitted with a relaxation rate presenting crossovers from one-phonon transitions, nearly independent of temperature, to two-phonon processes, varying as T^7, to Arrhenius-like. Substituting H with D lowers the overall rate by 8 times. The corresponding peak in the dielectric loss has an intensity nearly 40 times smaller than expected from the classical reorientation of the electric dipole associated with the OH complex. This fact is discussed in terms of coherent tunneling states of H in a cubic and orthorhombically distorted lattice, possibly indicating that only H in the symmetric regions of twin boundaries exhibit tunneling, and in terms of reduction of the effective dipole due to lattice polarization.
