In this article, we address both recent advances and open questions in some mathematical and computational issues in geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) and climate dynamics. The main focus is on 1) the primitive equations (PEs) models and their related mathematical and computational issues, 2) climate variability, predictability and successive bifurcation, and 3) a new dynamical systems theory and its applications to GFD and climate dynamics.
Due to the limited cell resolution in the representation of flow variables, a piecewise continuous initial reconstruction with discontinuous jump at a cell interface is usually used in modern computational fluid dynamics methods. Starting from the di
The climate system is a complex, chaotic system with many degrees of freedom and variability on a vast range of temporal and spatial scales. Attaining a deeper level of understanding of its dynamical processes is a scientific challenge of great urgen
Non-linear effects in accelerator physics are important for both successful operation of accelerators and during the design stage. Since both of these aspects are closely related, they will be treated together in this overview. Some of the most impor
In this paper, we begin by reviewing a certain number of mathematical challenges posed by the modelling of collective dynamics and self-organization. Then, we focus on two specific problems, first, the derivation of fluid equations from particle dyna
We derive the leading order radiation through tunneling of an oscillating soliton in a well. We use the hydrodynamic formulation with a rigorous control of the errors for finite times.
