Two-photon polymerization has been demonstrated as an effective technique to define embedded defects in three-dimensional photonic crystals. In this work we demonstrate the ability to precisely position embedded defects with respect to the lattice of three-dimensional photonic crystals by imaging the structure concurrently with two-photon writing. Defects are written with near-perfect lattice registration and at specifically defined depths within the crystal. The importance of precise defect position is demonstrated by investigating the optical properties of embedded planar cavities written in a photonic crystal. The experimental data is compared to spectra calculated using the Scalar Wave Approximation (SWA) which further demonstrates the importance of defect placement.

We solve {bf analytically} the multiple scattering (KKR) equations for the two dimensional photonic crystals in the long wavelength limit. Different approximations of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities are presented from a unified pseudopoten tial point of view. The nature of the so called plasmon-polariton bands are clarified. Its frequency as a function of the wire radius is discussed.
We studied the dynamic magnetic properties of plane periodical arrays of circular permalloy nano-dots fabricated using a self-organized mask formed by polysterene nanospheres on the surface of a Permalloy film. Conventional (microwave cavity) and bro adband coplanar-line ferromagnetic resonance setups were used for the measurements. We found several well resolved resonance peaks. This result shows that the self-organized mask fabrication technique is able to produce high-quality samples with small dispersion of geometrical and magnetic parameters.

We have obtained spectra of second-harmonic generation, third harmonic generation, and four-wave mixing from a fishnet metamaterial around its magnetic resonance. The resonant behaviors are distinctly different from those for ordinary materials. They result from the fact that the resonance is plasmonic, and its enhancement appears through the local field in the nanostructure.
We report on the structural properties of Ge_(1-x)Mn_x layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In these layers, nanocolumns with a high Mn content are embedded in an almost-pure Ge matrix. We have used grazing-incidence X-ray scattering, atomic force and transmission electron microscopy to study the structural properties of the columns. We demonstrate how the elastic deformation of the matrix (as calculated using atomistic simulations) around the columns, as well as the average inter-column distance can account for the shape of the diffusion around Bragg peaks.

We compare the quality factor values of the whispery gallery modes of microdisks incorporating GaN quantum dots (QDs) grown on AlN and AlGaN barriers by performing room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL measurements show a large number of high Q factor (Q) resonant modes on the whole spectrum which allows us to identify the different radial mode families and to compare them with simulations. We report a considerable improvement of the Q factor which reflect the etching quality and the relatively low cavity loss by inserting QDs into the cavity. GaN/AlN QDs based microdisks show very high Q values (Q > 7000) whereas the Q factor is only up to 2000 in microdisks embedding QDs grown on AlGaN barrier layer. We attribute this difference to the lower absorption below bandgap for AlN barrier layers at the energies of our experimental investigation.
