We report magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies on the quasi-two-dimensional spin-gap system (CuCl)LaNb2O7, a possible candidate for the J1-J2 model on a square lattice. A sharp single NQR line is observed at the Cu and Cl sites, indicating that both Cu and Cl atoms occupy a unique site. However, the electric field gradient tensors at the Cu, Cl, and La sites do not have axial symmetry. This is incompatible with the reported crystal structure. Thus the J1-J2 model has to be modified. We propose alternative two-dimensional dimer models based on the NMR, NQR, and TEM results. The value of the hyperfine coupling constant at the Cu sites indicates that the spin density is mainly on the d(3z2-r2) orbital (z parallel c). At 1.5 K, Cu- and Nb-NMR signals disappear above the critical field Bc1 = 10.3 T determined from the onset of the magnetization, indicating a field-induced magnetic phase transition at Bc1.

We report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies in the antiferromagnetic state of the quasi-two-dimensional (CuBr)LaNb2O7. The NMR spectra at zero magnetic field and 4.2 K indicate a unique Cu and Br sites with an internal field of 5.7 T (at Cu) a nd 16.4 T (at Br), confirming a magnetic order. For the large internal field at the Br sites to be compatible with the collinear antiferromagnetic order observed by neutron diffraction experiments (N. Oba et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 75, (2006) 113601), the Br atoms must move significantly off the center of the square of the Cu sublattice so that the Br nuclei couple predominantly to two parallel Cu moments. While invalidating the frustrated J1-J2 model defined on a C4-symmetric square lattice, our results are compatible with the structural model proposed for (CuCl)LaNb2O7 by Yoshida et al. (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 76 (2007) 104703).
Time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Sr2IrO4 single crystals were performed to access the spin Hamiltonian in this canonical Jeff=1/2 spin-orbital Mott insulator. The momentum of magnetic scattering at all inelastic energies th at were measured is revealed to be $L$-independent, indicative of idealized two-dimensional in-plane correlations. By probing the in-plane energy and momentum dependence up to ~80 meV we model the magnetic excitations and define a spin-gap of 0.6(1) meV. Collectively the results indicate that despite the strong spin-orbit entangled isospins an isotropic two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg model Hamiltonian accurately describes the magnetic interactions, pointing to a robust analogy with unconventional superconducting cuprates.
Using a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) synthesis method, novel two-dimensional (2D) mixed-spin magnetic systems, in which each magnetic layer is both structurally and magnetically isolated, have been generated. Specifically, a 2D Fe-Ni cyanide-bridged networ k with a face-centered square grid structure has been magnetically and structurally characterized. The results indicate the presence of ferromagnetic exchange interactions between the Fe$^{3+}$ ($S=1/2$) and Ni$^{2+}$ (S=1) centers.

A series of in-plane substituted compounds, including Cu-site (SrZn$_x$Cu$_{2-x}$(BO$_3$)$_2$), and B-site (SrCu$_2$(Si$_x$B$_{1-x}$O$_3$)$_2$) substitution, were synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that these c ompounds are single-phase materials and their in-plane lattice parameter depends systematically on the substituting content $x$. The magnetic susceptibility in different magnetic fields, the magnetization at different temperatures, and the resistivity at room temperature were measured, respectively. It is found that the spin gap deduced from the magnetic susceptibility measurements decreases with increasing of $x$ in both Cu- and B-site substitution. No superconductivity was found in these substituted compounds.

We investigated the electronic response of the quasi-two-dimensional spin gap compound La4Ru2O10 using optical spectroscopy. We observed drastic changes in the optical spectra as the temperature decreased, resulting in anisotropy in the electronic st ructure of the spin-singlet ground state. Using the orbital-dependent hopping analysis, we found that orbital ordering plays a crucial role in forming the spin gap state in the non-one-dimensional material.
