We present an experiment where a single molecule strongly affects the amplitude and phase of a laser field emerging from a subwavelength aperture. We achieve a visibility of -6% in direct and +10% in cross-polarized detection schemes. Our analysis shows that a close to full extinction should be possible using near-field excitation.

We report on a direct measurement of a phase shift on a weak coherent beam by a single Rb-87 atom in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A maximum phase shift of about 1 degree is observed experimentally.

The local interaction of charges and light in organic solids is the basis of distinct and fundamental effects. We here observe, at the single molecule scale, how a focused laser beam can locally shift by hundreds-time their natural linewidth and in a persistent way the transition frequency of organic chromophores, cooled at liquid helium temperatures in different host matrices. Supported by quantum chemistry calculations, the results are interpreted as effects of a photo-ionization cascade, leading to a stable electric field, which Stark-shifts the molecular electronic levels. The experimental method is then applied to a common challenge in quantum photonics, i.e. the independent tuning and synchronization of close-by quantum emitters, which is desirable for multi-photon experiments. Five molecules that are spatially separated by about 50 microns and originally 20 GHz apart are brought into resonance within twice their linewidth. Combining this ability with an emission linewidth that is only limited by the spontaneous decay, the system enables fabrication-free, independent tuning of multiple molecules integrated on the same photonic chip.
We propose a new type of superradiant laser based on a hot atomic beam traversing an optical cavity. We show that the theoretical minimum linewidth and maximum power are competitive with the best ultracoherent clock lasers. Also, our system operates naturally in continuous wave mode, which has been elusive for superradiant lasers so far. Unlike existing ultracoherent lasers, our design is simple and rugged. This makes it a candidate for the first widely accessible ultracoherent laser, as well as the first to realize sought-after applications of ultracoherent lasers in challenging environments.
The fate of entanglement of spins for two heavy constituents of a bound state moving in a strong laser field is analyzed within the semiclassical approach. The bound state motion as a whole is considered classically beyond the dipole approximation an d taking into account the magnetic field effect by using the exact solution to the Newton equation. At the same time the evolution of constituent spins under the laser influence is studied quantum mechanically. The spin density matrix is determined as solution to the von Neumann equation with the effective Hamiltonian, describing spin-laser interaction along the bound state classical trajectory. Based on the solution, the dynamics of concurrence of spins is calculated for the maximally entangled Werner states as well as for an initially uncorrelated state.
We present a novel approach to engineer the photon correlations emerging from the interference between an input field and the field scattered by a single atom in free space. Nominally, the inefficient atom-light coupling causes the quantum correlatio ns to be dominated by the input field alone. To overcome this issue, we propose the use of separate pump and probe beams, where the former increases the atomic emission to be comparable to the probe. Examining the second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}(tau)$ of the total field in the probe direction, we find that the addition of the pump formally plays the same role as increasing the coupling efficiency. We show that one can tune the correlation function $g^{(2)}(0)$ from zero (perfect anti-bunching) to infinite (extreme bunching) by a proper choice of pump amplitude. We further elucidate the origin of these correlations in terms of the transient atomic state following the detection of a photon.
