A description of destruction of states on the grounds of quantum mechanics rather than quantum field theory is proposed. Several kinds of maps called supertraces are defined and used to describe the destruction procedure. The introduced algorithm can be treated as a supplement to the von Neumann-Lueders measurement. The discussed formalism may be helpful in a description of EPR type experiments and in quantum information theory.

Classical chimera states are paradigmatic examples of partial synchronization patterns emerging in nonlinear dynamics. These states are characterized by the spatial coexistence of two dramatically different dynamical behaviors, i.e., synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. Our aim in this contribution is to discuss signatures of chimera states in quantum mechanics. We study a network with a ring topology consisting of N coupled quantum Van der Pol oscillators. We describe the emergence of chimera-like quantum correlations in the covariance matrix. Further, we establish the connection of chimera states to quantum information theory by describing the quantum mutual information for a bipartite state of the network.
We point out that bound states, degenerate in energy but differing in parity, may form in one dimensional quantum systems even if the potential is non-singular in any finite domain. Such potentials are necessarily unbounded from below at infinity and occur in several different contexts, such as in the study of localised states in brane-world scenarios. We describe how to construct large classes of such potentials and give explicit analytic expressions for the degenerate bound states. Some of these bound states occur above the potential maximum while some are below. Various unusual features of the bound states are described and after highlighting those that are ansatz independent, we suggest that it might be possible to observe such parity-paired degenerate bound states in specific mesoscopic systems.
The important problem of how to prepare a quantum mechanical system, $S$, in a specific initial state of interest - e.g., for the purposes of some experiment - is addressed. Three distinct methods of state preparation are described. One of these meth ods has the attractive feature that it enables one to prepare $S$ in a preassigned initial state with certainty; i.e., the probability of success in preparing $S$ in a given state is unity. This method relies on coupling $S$ to an open quantum-mechanical environment, $E$, in such a way that the dynamics of $S vee E$ pulls the state of $S$ towards an attractor, which is the desired initial state of $S$. This method is analyzed in detail.

Quantum operations arise naturally in many fields of quantum information theory and quantum computing. One of the simplest example of quantum operation is the von Neumann-Lueders measurement. Destruction of states in quantum mechanics can be treated as a supplement to the von Neumann-Lueders measurement [P. Caban, J. Rembielinski, K. A. Smolinski and Z. Walczak, J. Phys. A 35, 3265 (2002)]. We show that destruction of states in one-qudit system is a quantum operation by finding its Kraus representation.
We study decoherence in a simple quantum mechanical model using two approaches. Firstly, we follow the conventional approach to decoherence where one is interested in solving the reduced density matrix from the perturbative master equation. Secondly, we consider our novel correlator approach to decoherence where entropy is generated by neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators. We show that both methods can accurately predict decoherence time scales. However, the perturbative master equation generically suffers from instabilities which prevents us to reliably calculate the systems total entropy increase. We also discuss the relevance of the results in our quantum mechanical model for interacting field theories.
