Parity (P) and time (T) invariance violating effects in the Ra atom are strongly enhanced due to close states of opposite parity, the large nuclear charge Z and the collective nature of P,T-odd nuclear moments. We have performed calculations of the atomic electric dipole moments (EDM) produced by the electron EDM and the nuclear magnetic quadrupole and Schiff moments. We have also calculated the effects of parity non-conservation produced by the nuclear anapole moment and the weak charge. Our results show that as a rule the values of these effects are much larger than those considered so far in other atoms (enhancement is up to 10^5 times).

A concise review of atomic parity violation with a focus on the measurement and interpretation of parity violation in cesium.
We discuss the propagation of hydrogen atoms in static electric and magnetic fields in a longitudinal atomic beam spin echo (lABSE) apparatus. There the atoms acquire geometric (Berry) phases that exhibit a new manifestation of parity-(P-)violation i n atomic physics. We provide analytical as well as numerical calculations of the behaviour of the metastable 2S states of hydrogen. The conditions for electromagnetic field configurations that allow for adiabatic evolution of the relevant atomic states are investigated. Our results provide the theoretical basis for the discussion of possible measurements of P-violating geometric phases in lABSE experiments.

Atomic Parity Violation provides the rare opportunity of a low energy window into possible new fundamental processes at very high mass scales normally investigated at large high energy accelerators. Precise measurements on atomic systems are currentl y the most sensitive probes of many kinds of new physics, and complement high energy experiments. Present atomic experiments are beginning to reach their limits of precision due to either sensitivity, systematics or atomic structure uncertainties. An experiment in a single trapped Barium ion can improve on all of these difficulties. This experiment uses methods to precisely manipulate and detect the spin state of a single ion in order to measure a parity induced splitting of the ground state magnetic sublevels in externally applied laser fields. The same methods can be used to provide precise measurements of more conventional atomic structure parameters.

Originating from the weak interaction, parity violation in chiral molecules has been considered as a possible origin of the biohomochirality. It was predicted in 1974 but has never been observed so far. Parity violation should lead to a very tiny fre quency difference in the rovibrational spectra of the enantiomers of a chiral molecule. We have proposed to observe this predicted frequency difference using the two photon Ramsey fringes technique on a supersonic beam. Promising candidates for this experiment are chiral oxorhenium complexes, which present a large effect, can be synthesized in large quantity and enantiopure form, and can be seeded in a molecular beam. As a first step towards our objective, a detailed spectroscopic study of methyltrioxorhenium (MTO) has been undertaken. It is an ideal test molecule as the achiral parent molecule of chiral candidates for the parity violation experiment. For the 187Re MTO isotopologue, a combined analysis of Fourier transform microwave and infrared spectra as well as ultra-high resolution CO2 laser absorption spectra enabled the assignment of 28 rotational lines and 71 rovibrational lines, some of them with a resolved hyperfine structure. A set of spectroscopic parameters in the ground and first excited state, including hyperfine structure constants, was obtained for the antisymmetric Re=O stretching mode of this molecule. This result validates the experimental approach to be followed once a chiral derivative of MTO will be synthesized, and shows the benefit of the combination of several spectroscopic techniques in different spectral regions, with different set-ups and resolutions. First high resolution spectra of jet-cooled MTO, obtained on the set-up being developed for the observation of molecular parity violation, are shown, which constitutes a major step towards the targeted objective.

Three earlier relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) calculations of dipole polarizability ($alpha_d$) of the Cd atom are not in good agreement with the available experimental value of $49.65(1.65) e a_0^3$. Among these two are finite-field approaches i n which the relativistic effects have been included approximately, while the other calculation uses a four component perturbed RCC method. However, another work adopting an approach similar to the latter perturbed RCC method gives a result very close to that of experiment. The major difference between these two perturbed RCC approaches lies in their implementation. To resolve this ambiguity, we have developed and employed the relativistic normal coupled-cluster (RNCC) theory to evaluate the $alpha_d$ value of Cd. The distinct features of the RNCC method are that the expression for the expectation value in this approach terminates naturally and that it satisfies the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. In addition, we determine this quantity in the finite-field approach in the framework of A four-component relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Considering the results from both these approaches, we arrive at a reliable value of $alpha_d=46.02(50) e a_0^3$. We also demonstrate that the contribution from the triples excitations in this atom is significant.
