We review the developments made during the last decade in the theory of polarization bremsstrahlung in the non-relativistic domain. A literature survey covering the latest history of the phenomenon is given. The main features which distinguish the polarization bremsstrahlung from other mechanisms of radiation are discussed and illustrated by the results of numerical calculations.

We study the x-ray emission following the collision of a Bi$^{83+}$ ion with a neutral Xe atom at the projectile energy 70 MeV/u. The collisional and post-collisional processes are treated separately. The probabilities of various many-electron proces ses at the collision are calculated within a relativistic independent electron model using the coupled-channel approach with atomic-like Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals. The analysis of the post-collisional processes resulting in the x-ray emission is based on the fluorescence yields, the radiation and Auger decay rates, and allows to derive intensities of the x-ray emission and compare them with experimental data. A reasonable agreement between the theoretical results and the recent experimental data is observed. The role of the relativistic effects is investigated.
We apply the ideas of effective field theory to nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Utilizing an artificial boundary of ignorance as a calculational tool, we develop the effective theory using boundary conditions to encode short-ranged effects that ar e deliberately not modeled; thus, the boundary conditions play a role similar to the effective action in field theory. Unitarity is temporarily violated in this method, but is preserved on average. As a demonstration of this approach, we consider the Coulomb interaction and find that this effective quantum mechanics can predict the bound state energies to very high accuracy with a small number of fitting parameters. It is also shown to be equivalent to the theory of quantum defects, but derived here using an effective framework. The method respects electromagnetic gauge invariance and also can describe decays due to short-ranged interactions, such as those found in positronium. Effective quantum mechanics appears applicable for systems that admit analytic long-range descriptions, but whose short-ranged effects are not reliably or efficiently modeled. Potential applications of this approach include atomic and condensed matter systems, but it may also provide a useful perspective for the study of blackholes.
We consider the processes of polarization bremsstrahlung in collisions of fast ions with linear chains consisting of isolated atoms. We obtained intensities and angular distributions of radiation spectra for arbitrary number of atoms in the chain. It appeared that interference in the photon radiation amplitudes lead to prominent variation of spectral angular distributions of polarization bremsstrahlung as compared to these distribuitions in collisions with an isolated atom. The mean loss of energy due to radiation or the so-called rediative friction is estimated. The results obtained permit standard generalization to the case of polarization bremsstrahlung in fast ion chanelling above surfaces an and in solid body.
We present a fully relativistic calculation of the bremsstrahlung emitted by twisted electrons propagating in the field of bare heavy nuclei. The electron-nucleus interaction is accounted for to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $a lpha Z$, thus allowing us to investigate the bremsstrahlung in a strong field, where the effects of the twistedness are expected to be most pronounced. To explore these effects, we study the angular and polarization properties of the photons emitted in course of the inelastic twisted electrons scattering by the gold target. The influence of the kinematic parameters of the incident electrons on the double-differential cross section and the degree of the linear polarization is also discussed.
We investigate hadron production as well as transverse hadron spectra in nucleus-nucleus collisions from 2 $Acdot$GeV to 21.3 $Acdot$TeV within two independent transport approaches (UrQMD and HSD) that are based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom. The comparison to experimental data demonstrates that both approaches agree quite well with each other and with the experimental data on hadron production. The enhancement of pion production in central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions relative to scaled $pp$ collisions (the kink) is well described by both approaches without involving any phase transition. However, the maximum in the $K^+/pi^+$ ratio at 20 to 30 A$cdot$GeV (the horn) is missed by $sim$ 40%. A comparison to the transverse mass spectra from $pp$ and C+C (or Si+Si) reactions shows the reliability of the transport models for light systems. For central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions at bombarding energies above $sim$ 5 A$cdot$GeV, however, the measured $K^{pm}$ $m_{T}$-spectra have a larger inverse slope parameter than expected from the calculations. The approximately constant slope of $K^pm$ spectra at SPS (the step) is not reproduced either. Thus the pressure generated by hadronic interactions in the transport models above $sim$ 5 A$cdot$GeV is lower than observed in the experimental data. This finding suggests that the additional pressure - as expected from lattice QCD calculations at finite quark chemical potential and temperature - might be generated by strong interactions in the early pre-hadronic/partonic phase of central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions.
