The advection of passive tracers in a system of 4 identical point vortices is studied when the motion of the vortices is chaotic. The phenomenon of vortex-pairing has been observed and statistics of the pairing time is computed. The distribution exhibits a power-law tail with exponent $sim 3.6$ implying finite average pairing time. This exponents is in agreement with its computed analytical estimate of 3.5. Tracer motion is studied for a chosen initial condition of the vortex system. Accessible phase space is investigated. The size of the cores around the vortices is well approximated by the minimum inter-vortex distance and stickiness to these cores is observed. We investigate the origin of stickiness which we link to the phenomenon of vortex pairing and jumps of tracers between cores. Motion within the core is considered and fluctuations are shown to scale with tracer-vortex distance $r$ as $r^{6}$. No outward or inward diffusion of tracers are observed. This investigation allows the separation of the accessible phase space in four distinct regions, each with its own specific properties: the region within the cores, the reunion of the periphery of all cores, the region where vortex motion is restricted and finally the far-field region. We speculate that the stickiness to the cores induced by vortex-pairings influences the long-time behavior of tracers and their anomalous diffusion.

The problem of vortex pair motion in two-dimensional plane radial flow is solved. Under certain conditions for flow parameters, the vortex pair can reverse its motion within a bounded region. The vortex-pair translational velocity decreases or increa ses after passing through the source/sink region, depending on whether the flow is diverging or converging, respectively. The rotational motion of two corotating vortexes in a quiescent environment transforms into motion along a logarithmic spiral in the presence of radial flow. The problem may have applications in astrophysics and geophysics.

We develop a framework to study the role of variability in transport across a streamline of a reference flow. Two complementary schemes are presented: a graphical approach for individual cases, and an analytical approach for general properties. The s patially nonlinear interaction of dynamic variability and the reference flow results in flux variability. The characteristic time-scale of the dynamic variability and the length-scale of the flux variability in a unit of flight-time govern the spatio-temporal interaction that leads to transport. The non-dimensional ratio of the two characteristic scales is shown to be a a critical parameter. The pseudo-lobe sequence along the reference streamline describes spatial coherency and temporal evolution of transport. For finite-time transport from an initial time up to the present, the characteristic length-scale of the flux variability regulates the width of the pseudo-lobes. The phase speed of pseudo-lobe propagation averages the reference flow and the flux variability. In contrast, for definite transport over a fixed time interval and spatial segment, the characteristic time-scale of the dynamic variability regulates the width of the pseudo-lobes. Generation of the pseudo-lobe sequence appears to be synchronous with the dynamic variability, although it propagates with the reference flow. In either case, the critical characteristic ratio is found to be one, corresponding to a resonance of the flux variability with the reference flow. Using a kinematic model, we demonstrate the framework for two types of transport in a blocked flow of the mid-latitude atmosphere: across the meandering jet axis and between the jet and recirculating cell.

Asymptotic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) properties are investigated in the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with a localized geometric defect. In particular, we focus on the universal nature of nonequilibrium steady states of the modi fied TASEP. Since the original TASEP belongs to the KPZ universality class, it is mathematically and physically a quite interesting question whether the localized columnar defect, the slow bond (SB), is really always relevant to the KPZ universality or not. However, it is numerically controversial to address the possibility of the non-queued SB phase in the weak-strength SB limit. Based on the detailed statistical analysis of KPZ-type growing interfaces, we present a comprehensive view of the non-queue SB phase, compared to finite-size crossover effects that reported in our earlier work [Soh {it et al.}, Phys. Rev. E {bf 95}, 042123 (2017)]. Moreover, we employ two types of passive tracer dynamics as the probe of the SB dynamics. Finally, we provide intuitive arguments for additional clues to resolve the controversy of the SB problem.
In a concurrent work, Villois et al. 2020 reported the evidence that vortex reconnections in quantum fluids follow an irreversible dynamics, namely vortices separate faster than they approach; such time-asymmetry is explained by using simple conserva tion arguments. In this work we develop further these theoretical considerations and provide a detailed study of the vortex reconnection process for all the possible geometrical configurations of the order parameter (superfluid) wave function. By matching the theoretical description of incompressible vortex filaments and the linear theory describing locally vortex reconnections, we determine quantitatively the linear momentum and energy exchanges between the incompressible (vortices) and the compressible (density waves) degrees of freedom of the superfluid. We show theoretically and corroborate numerically, why a unidirectional density pulse must be generated after the reconnection process and why only certain reconnecting angles, related to the rates of approach and separations, are allowed. Finally, some aspects concerning the conservation of centre-line helicity during the reconnection process are discussed.
A general Hamiltonian wave system with quartic resonances is considered, in the standard kinetic limit of a continuum of weakly interacting dispersive waves with random phases. The evolution equation for the multimode characteristic function $Z$ is o btained within an interaction representation and a perturbation expansion in the small nonlinearity parameter. A frequency renormalization is performed to remove linear terms that do not appear in the 3-wave case. Feynman-Wyld diagrams are used to average over phases, leading to a first order differential evolution equation for $Z$. A hierarchy of equations, analogous to the Boltzmann hierarchy for low density gases is derived, which preserves in time the property of random phases and amplitudes. This amounts to a general formalism for both the $N$-mode and the 1-mode PDF equations for 4-wave turbulent systems, suitable for numerical simulations and for investigating intermittency.
