The evolution equation for active and sterile neutrinos propagating in general anisotropic or polarized background environment is found and solved for a special case when heavy neutrinos do not decouple, resulting in non-unitary mixing among light neutrino states. Then new CP violating neutrino oscillation effects appear. In contrast to the standard unitary neutrino oscillations these effects can be visible even for two flavour neutrino transitions and even if one of the elements of the neutrino mixing matrix is equal to zero. They do not necessarily vanish with $delta m^{2} to 0$ and they are different for various pairs of flavour neutrino transitions ($ u_e to u_mu$), ($ u_mu to u_tau$), ($ u_tau to u_e$). Neutrino oscillations in vacuum and Earths matter are calculated for some fixed baseline experiments and a comparison between unitary and non-unitary oscillations are presented. It is shown, taking into account the present experimental constraints, that heavy neutrino states can affect CP and T asymmetries. This is especially true in the case of $ u_mu to u_tau$ oscillations.

We investigate effects of non-zero Dirac and Majorana CP violating phases on neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in a magnetic field of astrophysical environments. It is shown that in the presence of strong magnetic fields and dense matter, non-zero C P phases can induce new resonances in the oscillations channels $ u_e leftrightarrow bar{ u}_e$, $ u_e leftrightarrow bar{ u}_mu$ and $ u_e leftrightarrow bar{ u}_{tau}$. We also consider all other possible oscillation channels with $ u_mu$ and $ u_tau$ in the initial state. The resonances can potentially lead to significant phenomena in neutrino oscillations accessible for observation in experiments. In particular, we show that neutrino-antineutrino oscillations combined with Majorana-type CP violation can affect the $bar{ u}_e$/$ u_e$ ratio for neutrinos coming from the supernovae explosion. This effect is more prominent for the normal neutrino mass ordering. The detection of supernovae neutrino fluxes in the future experiments, such as JUNO, DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande, can give an insight into the nature of CP violation and, consequently, provides a tool for distinguishing the Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrinos.
We consider a class of models predicting new heavy neutral fermionic states, whose mixing with the light neutrinos can be naturally significant and produce observable effects below the threshold for their production. We update the indirect limits on the flavour non-diagonal mixing parameters that can be derived from unitarity, and show that significant rates are in general expected for one-loop-induced rare processes due to the exchange of virtual heavy neutrinos, involving the violation of the muon and electron lepton numbers. In particular, the amplitudes for $mu$--$e$ conversion in nuclei and for $muto ee^+e^-$ show a non-decoupling quadratic dependence on the heavy neutrino mass $M$, while $muto egamma$ is almost independent of the heavy scale above the electroweak scale. These three processes are then used to set stringent constraints on the flavour-violating mixing angles. In all the cases considered, we point out explicitly that the non-decoupling behaviour is strictly related to the spontaneous breaking of the SU(2) symmetry.

We review the propagation of light neutrinos in matter assuming that their mixing with heavy neutrinos is close to present experimental limits. The phenomenological implications of the non-unitarity of the light neutrino mixing matrix for neutrino os cillations are discussed. In particular we show that the resonance effect in neutrino propagation in matter persists, but for slightly modified values of the parameters and with the maximum reduced by a small amount proportional to the mixing between light and heavy neutrinos squared.
The Kamiokande II and IMB data on contained events induced by atmospheric neutrinos exhibit too low a ratio of muons to electrons, which has been interpreted as a possible indication of neutrino oscillations. At the same time, the recent data on upwa rd--going muons in underground detectors have shown no evidence for neutrino oscillations, strongly limiting the allowed region of oscillation parameter space. In this paper we confront different types of neutrino oscillation hypotheses with the experimental results. The matter effects in $ u_mu leftrightarrow u_e$ and in $ u_mu leftrightarrow u_{sterile}$ oscillations are discussed and shown to affect significantly the upward--going muons.
The presence of new neutrino-quark interactions can enhance, deplete or distort the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) event rate. The new interactions may involve CP violating phases that can potentially affect these features. Assu ming light vector mediators, we study the effects of CP violation on the CEvNS process in the COHERENT sodium-iodine, liquid argon and germanium detectors. We identify a region in parameter space for which the event rate always involves a dip and another one for which this is never the case. We show that the presence of a dip in the event rate spectrum can be used to constraint CP violating effects, in such a way that the larger the detector volume the tighter the constraints. Furthermore, it allows the reconstruction of the effective coupling responsible for the signal with an uncertainty determined by recoil energy resolution. In the region where no dip is present, we find that CP violating parameters can mimic the Standard Model CEvNS prediction or spectra induced by real parameters. We point out that the interpretation of CEvNS data in terms of a light vector mediator should take into account possible CP violating effects. Finally, we stress that our results are qualitatively applicable for CEvNS induced by solar or reactor neutrinos. Thus, the CP violating effects discussed here and their consequences should be taken into account as well in the analysis of data from multi-ton dark matter detectors or experiments such as CONUS, $ u$-cleus or CONNIE.
