We perform a lattice study, in the quenched approximation, of dynamical mass generation in a system of relativistic (Dirac) fermions, coupled to an Abelian gauge field in (2+1)-dimensions, in the presence of an external (constant) magnetic field, perpendicular to the spatial planes. It is shown that a strong magnetic field catalyzes chiral symmetry breaking, in agreement with results in the continuum. The r^ole of the higher-Landau poles in inducing a critical temperature above which the phenomenon disappears is pointed out. We also discuss the implications of this model on the opening of a gap in doped antiferromagnetic superconductors.

We study the influence of an external magnetic field on the deconfinement transition in two-flavour lattice QCD with physical quark charges. We use dynamical overlap fermions without any approximation such as fixed topology and perform simulations on a $16^3 times 6$ lattice and at a pion mass around $500MeV$. The pion mass (as well as the lattice spacing) was determined in independent runs on $12^3 times 24$ lattices. We consider two temperatures, one of which is close to the deconfinement transition and one which is above. Within our limited statistics the dependence of the Polyakov loop and chiral condensate on the magnetic field supports the inverse magnetic catalysis scenario in which the transition temperature decreases as the field strength grows for temperature not to far above the critical temperature.

Dynamical symmetry breaking in three dimensional QED with $N$ flavors, which has been mostly analyzed by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equations, is investigated by means of the approximated Wilson, or non-perturbative, renormalization group (RG). We s tudy the RG flows of the gauge coupling and the general four-fermi couplings allowed by the symmetry with concentrating our interest on study of the phase structure. The RG equations have no gauge parameter dependence in our approximation scheme. It is found that there exist chirally broken and unbroken phases for $N > N_{rm cr}$ ($3 < N_{rm cr} < 4$) and that the unbroken phase disappears for $N < N_{rm cr}$. We also discuss the spontaneous parity breaking in three dimensional QED with the four-fermi interactions.
We propose a novel lattice calculation of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QED model with 2+1 dimensional fermion brane. Considering the relativistic action with gauge symmetry we rigorously carry out path integral in Monte-Carlo simulation wi th Fermi-velocity relevant to effective coupling constant. We numerically show the evidence of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong coupling region with chiral condensate, low-lying mode distribution and Nambu-Goldstone boson spectrum in bare Fermi-velocty $v=0.1$. This is a feasible study to investigate the phase structure of Graphene.
Extending the SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion from up, down and strange sea quark masses to partially quenched valence quark masses allows an extrapolation to the charm quark mass. This approach leads to a determination of charmed quark had ron masses and decay constants. We describe our recent progress and give preliminary results in particular with regard to the recently discovered doubly charmed baryon by the LHCb Collaboration.
QCD lattice simulations with 2+1 flavours (when two quark flavours are mass degenerate) typically start at rather large up-down and strange quark masses and extrapolate first the strange quark mass and then the up-down quark mass to its respective ph ysical value. Here we discuss an alternative method of tuning the quark masses, in which the singlet quark mass is kept fixed. Using group theory the possible quark mass polynomials for a Taylor expansion about the flavour symmetric line are found, first for the general 1+1+1 flavour case and then for the 2+1 flavour case. This ensures that the kaon always has mass less than the physical kaon mass. This method of tuning quark masses then enables highly constrained polynomial fits to be used in the extrapolation of hadron masses to their physical values. Numerical results for the 2+1 flavour case confirm the usefulness of this expansion and an extrapolation to the physical pion mass gives hadron mass values to within a few percent of their experimental values. Singlet quantities remain constant which allows the lattice spacing to be determined from hadron masses (without necessarily being at the physical point). Furthermore an extension of this programme to include partially quenched results is given.
