The proposal of the possibility of change of signature in quantum cosmology has led to the study of this phenomenon in classical general relativity theory, where there has been some controversy about what is and is not possible. We here present a new analysis of such a change of signature, based on previous studies of the initial value problem in general relativity. We emphasize that there are various continuity suppositions one can make at a classical change of signature, and consider more general assumptions than made up to now. We confirm that in general such a change can take place even when the second fundamental form of the surface of change does not vanish.

We make a rigorous study of classical field equations on a 2-dimensional signature changing spacetime using the techniques of operator theory. Boundary conditions at the surface of signature change are determined by forming self-adjoint extensions of the Schrodinger Hamiltonian. We show that the initial value problem for the Klein--Gordon equation on this spacetime is ill-posed in the sense that its solutions are unstable. Furthermore, if the initial data is smooth and compactly supported away from the surface of signature change, the solution has divergent $L^2$-norm after finite time.
The semi classical cosmology approximation for a Friedman Robertson Walker geometry coupled to a field is considered. A power series of the field with coefficients that depend on the radius of the geometry is proposed, and the equations for the coefficients are solved.

The topological structure of the event horizon has been investigated in terms of the Morse theory. The elementary process of topological evolution can be understood as a handle attachment. It has been found that there are certain constraints on the n ature of black hole topological evolution: (i) There are n kinds of handle attachments in (n+1)-dimensional black hole space-times. (ii) Handles are further classified as either of black or white type, and only black handles appear in real black hole space-times. (iii) The spatial section of an exterior of the black hole region is always connected. As a corollary, it is shown that the formation of a black hole with an S**(n-2) x S**1 horizon from that with an S**(n-1) horizon must be non-axisymmetric in asymptotically flat space-times.

Modified Newtonian Dynamics is an empirical modification to Poissons equation which has had success in accounting for the `gravitational field $Phi$ in a variety of astrophysical systems. The field $Phi$ may be interpreted in terms of the weak field limit of a variety of spacetime geometries. Here we consider three of these geometries in a more comprehensive manner and look at the effect on timelike and null geodesics. In particular we consider the Aquadratic Lagrangian (AQUAL) theory, Tensor-Vector-Scalar (TeVeS) theory and Generalized Einstein-{AE}ther (GEA) theory. We uncover a number of novel features, some of which are specific to the theory considered while others are generic. In the case of AQUAL and TeVeS theories, the spacetime exhibits an excess (AQUAL) or deficit (TeVeS) solid angle akin to the case of a Barriola-Vilenkin global monopole. In the case of GEA, a disformal symmetry of the action emerges in the limit of $gradPhirightarrow 0$. Finally, in all theories studied, massive particles can never reach spatial infinity while photons can do so only after experiencing infinite redshift.
In the Unruh effect an observer with constant acceleration perceives the quantum vacuum as thermal radiation. The Unruh effect has been believed to be a pure quantum phenomenon, but here we show theoretically how the effect arises from the classical correlation of noise. We demonstrate this idea with a simple experiment on water waves where we see the first indications of a Planck spectrum in the correlation energy.
