The specific heat of (Na,Ca)Co_{2}O_{4} is measured at low-temperatures to determine the magnitude of the electronic specific-heat coefficient gamma, in an attempt to gain an insight into the origin of the unusually large thermoelectric power of this compound. It is found that gamma is as large as 48 mJ/molK^2, which is an order of magnitude larger than gamma of simple metals. This indicates that (Na,Ca)Co_{2}O_{4} is a strongly-correlated electron system, where the strong correlation probably comes from the low-dimensionality and the frustrated spin structure. We discuss how the large thermopower and its dependence on Ca doping can be understood with the strong electron correlations.

Soft-x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopies are employed to investigate the electronic structures of Sr_{1-x}Rh_{2}O_{4}. Similarly to the layered cobaltates such as Na_{1-x}CoO_{2}, a valence-band satellite feature (VBS) occurs at higher binding energy to the O 2p band. We find that the VBS resonates at the O 1s edge. Additionally, core absorption shows clear x dependence in the O 1s edge rather than in the Rh 3p edge. These results indicate that the holes in the initial state mainly have O 2p character presumably due to d-p rehybridizations affected by Sr^{2+} vacancy potentials. The resultant inhomogenous charge texture may have impact on the TE transport properties at low x.
The magnetic field response of the Mott-insulating honeycomb iridate Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ is investigated using torque magnetometry measurements in magnetic fields up to 60 tesla. A peak-dip structure is observed in the torque response at magnetic field s corresponding to an energy scale close to the zigzag ordering ($approx 15~K$) temperature. Using exact diagonalization calculations, we show that such a distinctive signature in the torque response constrains the effective spin models for these classes of Kitaev materials to ones with dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions, while alternative models with dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions are excluded. We further show that at high magnetic fields, long range spin correlation functions decay rapidly, signaling a transition to a long-sought-after field-induced quantum spin liquid beyond the peak-dip structure. Kitaev systems are thus revealed to be excellent candidates for field-induced quantum spin liquids, similar physics having been suggested in another Kitaev material $alpha-$RuCl$_{3}$.
We report the observation of an unusual behavior of highly extended 5d electrons in Y2Ir2O7 belonging to pyrochlore family of great current interest using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental bulk spectra reveal an intense low er Hubbard band in addition to weak intensities in the vicinity of the Fermi level, e_F. This provides a direct evidence for strong electron correlation among the 5d electrons, despite their highly extended nature. The high resolution spectrum at room temperature exhibits a pseudogap at e_F and |e - e_F|^2 dependence demonstrating the importance of electron correlation in this system. Remarkably, in the magnetically ordered phase (T < 150 K), the spectral lineshape evolves to a |e - e_F|^1.5 dependence emphasizing the dominant role of electron-magnon coupling.

Weyl fermions scattering from a random Coulomb potential are predicted to exhibit resistivity versus temperature $rho space alpha space T^{-4}$ in a single particle model. Here we show that, in closed environment-grown polycrystalline samples of $Y_{ 2}Ir_{2}O_{7}$, $rho = rho_{0} T^{-4}$ over four orders of magnitude in $rho$. While the measured prefactor, $rho_{0}$, is obtained from the model using reasonable materials parameters, the $T^{-4}$ behavior extends far beyond the models range of applicability. In particular, the behavior extends into the low-temperature, high-resistivity region where the Ioffe-Regel parameter, $k_{T} ell ll 2pi$. Strong on-site Coulomb correlations, instrumental for predicting a Weyl semimetal state in $Y_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}$, are the possible origin of such bad Weyl semimetal behavior.

Combining quasistatic and time-resolved transport measurements with X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments we study the non-equilibrium states that arise in pure and in Ti substituted Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ under the application of current densities. Time- resolved studies of the current-induced switching find a slow conductance relaxation that can be identified with heating and a fast one that unambiguously proves an intrinsic mechanism. The current-induced phase transition leads to complex diffraction patterns. Separated Bragg reflections that can be associated with the metallic and insulating phases by their lattice parameters, indicate a real structure with phase coexistence that strongly varies with temperature and current strength. A third contribution with a $c$ lattice constant in between those of metallic and insulating phases appears upon cooling. At low current densities, this additional phase appears below $sim$100 K and is accompanied by a suppression of the antiferromagnetic order that otherwise can coexist with current carrying states. A possible origin of the intermediate phase is discussed.
