Analysis of the spheroidal modes of vibration of a free elastic sphere show that they can be qualitatively grouped into two categories: primarily longitudinal and primarily transverse. This is not a sharp distinction. However, there is a relatively stark contrast between the two kinds of modes. Primarily transverse modes have a small divergence and have frequencies that are almost functionally independent of the longitudinal speed of sound. Analysis of inelastic light scattering intensity from confined acoustic phonons in nanoparticles requires an understanding of this qualitative distinction between different spheroidal modes. In addition, some common misconceptions about spheroidal modes are corrected.

The nearly dispersionless, so-called optical vibrational modes observed by inelastic neutron scattering from icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn and Zn-Mg-Y quasicrystals are found to correspond well to modes of a continuum elastic sphere that has the same diameter as the corresponding icosahedral basic units of the quasicrystal. When the sphere is considered as free, most of the experimentally found modes can be accounted for, in both systems. Taking into account the mechanical connection between the clusters and the remainder of the quasicrystal allows a complete assignment of all optical modes in the case of Al-Pd-Mn. This approach provides support to the relevance of clusters in the vibrational properties of quasicrystals.

We present our density functional results of the geometry, electronic structure and dissociation energy of Ti_8C_12 dimer. We show that as opposed to the currently held view that Ti_8C_12 are highly stable monodispersed clusters, the neutral Ti_8C_12 clusters form covalent bonds and form stable dimers. We determine that the Ti atoms bond weakly (0.9 eV/bond) to organic ligands such as ammonia. Alternatively the Met-Car dimer has a cohesive energy of 4.84 eV or approximately 1.2 eV per bond. While Met-Car dimers are stable, formation of these dimers may be quenched in an environment that contains a significant population of organic ligands. The ionization and dissociation energies of the dimer are of same order which prevents the observation of the dimer in the ion mass spectroscopy. The analysis of the vibrational frequencies show the lowest-energy structure to be dynamically stable. We also present infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectra of the Ti_8C_12 dimer.
Electronic, structural, vibrational and elastic properties of PaN have been studied both at ambient and high pressures, using first principles methods with several commonly used parameterizations of the exchange-correlation energy. The generalized gr adient approximation (GGA) reproduces the ground state properties satisfactorily. Under pressure PaN is found to undergo a structural transition from NaCl to the R-3m structure near 58 GPa. The high pressure behavior of the acoustic phonon branch along the (1,0,0) and (1,1,0) directions, and the C44 elastic constant are anomalous, which signals the structural transition. With GGA exchange-correlation, a topological transition in the charge density occurs near the structural transition which may be regarded as a quantum phase transition, where the order parameter obeys a mean field scaling law. However, the topological transition is absent when other exchange-correlation functionals are invoked (local density approximation (LDA) and hybrid functional). Therefore, this constitutes an example of GGA and LDA leading to qualitatively different predictions, and it is of great interest to examine experimentally whether this topological transition occurs.

We revisit the quantum phase transition from a paraelectric state to a ferroelectric one and in particular the widespread distinction between a longitudinal modes to transverse one. In contrast to transitions at finite temperature, for a quantum phas e transition breaking a discrete symmetry the splitting between the modes is irrelevant. We show that an anisotropy in the context of a quantum phase transition leads to a different behavior, compared to a classical transition, and suggest an experiment to observe it. The result is essential for explaining the pairing mechanism in strontium titanate.
The magnetostatic mode (MSM) spectrum of a 300$mu$m diameter single crystalline sphere of yttrium iron garnet is investigated using broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The individual MSMs are identified via their characteristic dispersion relati ons and the corresponding mode number tuples $(nmr)$ are assigned. Taking FMR data over a broad frequency and magnetic field range allows to analyze both the Gilbert damping parameter~$alpha$ and the inhomogeneous line broadening contribution to the total linewidth of the MSMs separately. The linewidth analysis shows that all MSMs share the same Gilbert damping parameter $alpha=2.7(5) times 10^{-5}$ irrespective of their mode index. In contrast, the inhomogeneous line broadening shows a pronounced mode dependence. This observation is modeled in terms of two-magnon scattering processes of the MSMs into the spin-wave manifold, mediated by surface and volume defects.
