The dynamics of spin-lattice relaxation of the Mn-ions in (Zn,Mn)Se-based diluted-magnetic-semiconductor quantum wells is studied by time-resolved photoluminescence. The spin-lattice relaxation time varies by five orders of magnitude from 10-3 down to 10-8 s, when the Mn content increases from 0.4 up to 11%. Free carriers play an important role in this dynamics. Hot carriers with excess kinetic energy contribute to heating of the Mn system, while cooling of the Mn system occurs in the presence of cold background carriers provided by modulation doping. In a Zn0.89Mn0.11Se quantum well structure, where the spin-lattice relaxation process is considerably shorter than the characteristic lifetime of nonequilibrium phonons, also the phonon dynamics and its contribution to heating of the Mn system are investigated.

The magnetization kinetics in (Zn,Mn)Se/(Zn,Be)Se quantum wells has been studied on a ps-time scale after pulsed laser excitation. The magnetization induced by an external magnetic field is reduced by up to 30% during ~100 ps due to spin and energy t ransfer from photocarriers to Mn spin system. The giant Zeeman splitting leads to a complete spin polarization of the carriers, resulting in a strong suppression of flip-flop processes between carriers and magnetic ions. Therefore a multiple angular momentum transfer from each spin-polarized hole to the Mn ions becomes the dominant mechanism in the magnetization dynamics. A model based on spin-momentum coupling in the valence band is suggested for explaining this transfer.
Investigations of photoluminescence (PL) in the magnetic field of quantum structures based on the ZnSe quantum well with asymmetrical ZnBeMnSe and ZnBeSe barriers reveal that the introduction of Be into semimagnetic ZnMnSe causes a decrease of the ex change integrals for conductive and valence bands as well as the forming of a complex based on Mn, degeneration of an energy level of which with the energy levels of the V band of ZnBeMnSe or ZnSe results in spin-flip electron transitions.
The electron spin dynamics in (111)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells is studied by timeresolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. By applying an external field of 50 kV/cm a two-order of magnitude increase of the spin relaxation time can be observed reaching values larger than 30 ns; this is a consequence of the electric field tuning of the spin-orbit conduction band splitting which can almost vanish when the Rashba term compensates exactly the Dresselhaus one. The measurements under transverse magnetic field demonstrate that the electron spin relaxation time for the three space directions can be tuned simultaneously with the applied electric field.
We have studied spin dephasing in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system (2DES), confined in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well grown in the [110] direction, using the resonant spin amplification (RSA) technique. From the characteristic shape of the RSA spectra, we are able to extract the spin dephasing times (SDT) for electron spins aligned along the growth direction or within the sample plane, as well as the $g$ factor. We observe a strong anisotropy in the spin dephasing times. While the in-plane SDT remains almost constant as the temperature is varied between 4 K and 50 K, the out-of-plane SDT shows a dramatic increase at a temperature of about 25 K and reaches values of about 100 ns. The SDTs at 4 K can be further increased by additional, weak above-barrier illumination. The origin of this unexpected behavior is discussed, the SDT enhancement is attributed to the redistribution of charge carriers between the electron gas and remote donors.
Organic-inorganic layered perovskites are two-dimensional quantum wells with layers of lead-halide octahedra stacked between organic ligand barriers. The combination of their dielectric confinement and ionic sublattice results in excitonic excitation s with substantial binding energies that are strongly coupled to the surrounding soft, polar lattice. However, the ligand environment in layered perovskites can significantly alter their optical properties due to the complex dynamic disorder of soft perovskite lattice. Here, we observe the dynamic disorder through phonon dephasing lifetimes initiated by ultrafast photoexcitation employing high-resolution resonant impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy of a variety of ligand substitutions. We demonstrate that vibrational relaxation in layered perovskite formed from flexible alkyl-amines as organic barriers is fast and relatively independent of the lattice temperature. Relaxation in aromatic amine based layered perovskite is slower, though still fast relative to pure inorganic lead bromide lattices, with a rate that is temperature dependent. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we explain the fast rates of relaxation by quantifying the large anharmonic coupling of the optical modes with the ligand layers and rationalize the temperature independence due to their amorphous packing. This work provides a molecular and time-domain depiction of the relaxation of nascent optical excitations and opens opportunities to understand how they couple to the complex layered perovskite lattice, elucidating design principles for optoelectronic devices.
