We report measurements of the interaction-induced quantum Hall effect in a spin-polarized AlAs two-dimensional electron system where the electrons occupy two in-plane conduction band valleys. Via the application of in-plane strain, we tune the energies of these valleys and measure the energy gap of the quantum Hall state at filling factor $ u$ = 1. The gap has a finite value even at zero strain and, with strain, rises much faster than expected from a single-particle picture, suggesting that the lowest energy charged excitations at $ u=1$ are valley Skyrmions.

We discuss charged topological spin textures in quantum Hall ferromagnets in which the electrons carry a pseudospin as well as the usual spin degree of freedom, as is the case in bilayer GaAs or monolayer graphene samples. We develop a theory which t reats spin and pseudospin on a manifestly equal footing, which may also be of help in visualizing the relevant spin textures. We in particular consider the entanglement of spin and pseudospin in the presence of realistic anisotropies. An entanglement operator is introduced which generates families of degenerate Skyrmions with differing entanglement properties. We propose a local characterization of the latter, and touch on the role entangled Skyrmions play in the nuclear relaxation time of quantum Hall ferromagnets.

We investigate quasiparticles in bilayer quantum Hall systems around total filling factor nu =1 by current-pumped and resistively detected NMR. The measured Knight shift reveals that the spin component in the quasiparticle increases continuously with $Delta_{SAS}$. Combined with results for the pseudospin component obtained by activation gap measurements, this demonstrates that both spin and pseudospin are contained in a quasiparticle at intermediate $Delta_{SAS}$, providing evidence for the existence of the spin-pseudospin intermixed SU(4) skyrmion. Nuclear spin relaxation measurements show that the collective behavior of the SU(4) skyrmion system qualitatively changes with $Delta_{SAS}$.
In graphene superlattices, bulk topological currents can lead to long-range charge-neutral flow and non-local resistance near Dirac points. A ballistic version of these phenomena has never been explored. Here, we report transport properties of ballis tic graphene superlattices. This allows us to study and exploit giant non-local resistances with a large valley Hall angle without a magnetic field. In the low-temperature regime, a crossover occurs toward a new state of matter, referred to as a quantum valley Hall state (qVHS), which is an analog of the quantum Hall state without a magnetic field. Furthermore, a non-local resistance plateau, implying rigidity of the qVHS, emerges as a function of magnetic field, and the collapse of this plateau is observed, which is considered as a manifestation of valley/pseudospin magnetism.
When electrons are confined in two-dimensional (2D) materials, quantum mechanically enhanced transport phenomena, as exemplified by the quantum Hall effects (QHE), can be observed. Graphene, an isolated single atomic layer of graphite, is an ideal re alization of such a 2D system. Here, we report an experimental investigation of magneto transport in a high mobility single layer of graphene. Adjusting the chemical potential using the electric field effect, we observe an unusual half integer QHE for both electron and hole carriers in graphene. Vanishing effective carrier masses is observed at Dirac point in the temperature dependent Shubnikov de Haas oscillations, which probe the relativistic Dirac particle-like dispersion. The relevance of Berrys phase to these experiments is confirmed by the phase shift of magneto-oscillations, related to the exceptional topology of the graphene band structure.
Optical excitation provides a powerful tool to investigate non-equilibrium physics in quantum Hall systems. Moreover, the length scale associated with photo-excited charge carries lies between that of local probes and global transport measurements. H ere, we investigate non-equilibrium physics of optically-excited charge carriers in graphene through photocurrent measurements in the integer quantum Hall regime. We observe that the photocurrent oscillates as a function of Fermi level, revealing the Landau-level quantization, and that the photocurrent oscillations are different for Fermi levels near and distant from the Dirac point. Our observation qualitatively agrees with a model that assumes the photocurrent is dominated by chiral edge transport of non-equilibrium carriers. Our experimental results are consistent with electron and hole chiralities being the same when the Fermi level is distant from the Dirac point, and opposite when near the Dirac point.
