Fabrication of single nickel-nitrogen (NE8) defect centers in diamond by chemical vapor deposition is demonstrated. Under continuous-wave 745 nm laser excitation single defects were induced to emit single photon pulses at 797 nm with a linewidth of 1.5 nm at room temperature. Photon antibunching of single centers was demonstrated using a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss interferometer. Confocal images revealed approximately 10^6 optically active sites/cm^2 in the synthesized films. The fabrication of an NE8 based single photon source in synthetic diamond is important for fiber based quantum cryptography. It can also be used as an ideal point-like source for near-field optical microscopy.

Nanodiamond crystals containing single color centers have been grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The fluorescence from individual crystallites was directly correlated with crystallite size using a combined atomic force and scanning confocal f luorescence microscope. Under the conditions employed, the optimal size for single optically active nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center incorporation was measured to be 60 to 70 nm. The findings highlight a strong dependence of NV incorporation on crystal size, particularly with crystals less than 50 nm in size.
A technique has been developed for depositing diamond crystals on the endfaces of optical fibers and capturing the fluorescence generated by optically active defects in the diamond into the fiber. This letter details the diamond growth on optical fib ers and transmission of fluorescence through the fiber from the nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) color center in diamond. Control of the concentration of defects incorporated during the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth process is also demonstrated. These are the first critical steps in developing a fiber coupled single photon source based on optically active defect centers in diamond.
We report on the production of nanodiamonds (NDs) with 70-80 nm size via bead assisted sonic disintegration (BASD) of a polycrystalline chemical vapor deposition (CVD) film. The NDs display high crystalline quality as well as intense narrowband (7 nm ) room temperature luminescence at 738 nm due to in situ incorporated silicon vacancy (SiV) centers. The fluorescence properties at room and cryogenic temperatures indicate that the NDs are, depending on preparation, applicable as single photon sources or as fluorescence labels.
This work investigates the growth of B-C-N layers by chemical vapor deposition using methylamine borane (MeAB) as single-source precursor. MeAB has been synthesized and characterized, paying particular attention to the analysis of its thermolysis pro ducts, which are the gaseous precursors for B-C-N growth. Samples have been grown on Cu foils and transferred onto different substrates for their morphological, structural, chemical, electronic and optical characterizations. The results of these characterizations indicate a segregation of h-BN and Graphene-like (Gr) domains. However, there is an important presence of B and N interactions with C at the Gr borders, and of C interacting at the h-BN-edges, respectively, in the obtained nano-layers. In particular, there is significant presence of C-N bonds, at Gr/h-BN borders and in the form of N doping of Gr domains. The overall B:C:N contents in the layers is close to 1:3:1.5. A careful analysis of the optical bandgap determination of the obtained B-C-N layers is presented, discussed and compared with previous seminal works with samples of similar composition.
Combining MoS$_2$ monolayers to form multilayers allows to access new functionalities. In this work, we examine the correlation between the stacking order and the interlayer coupling of valence states in MoS$_2$ homobilayer samples grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and artificially stacked bilayers from CVD monolayers. We show that hole delocalization over the bilayer is allowed in 2H stacking and results in strong interlayer exciton absorption and also in a larger A-B exciton separation as compared to 3R bilayers, where both holes and electrons are confined to the individual layers. Comparing 2H and 3R reflectivity spectra allows to extract an interlayer coupling energy of about $t_perp=49$ meV. Obtaining very similar results for as-grown and artificially stacked bilayers is promising for assembling large area van der Waals structures with CVD material, using interlayer exciton absorption and A-B exciton separation as indicators for interlayer coupling. Beyond DFT calculations including excitonic effects confirm signatures of efficient interlayer coupling for 2H stacking in agreement with our experiments.
