In this paper we report results for magnetic observables of finite spin clusters composed of S=1/2 ions. We consider clusters of two, three and four spins in distinct spatial arrangements, with isotropic Heisenberg interactions of various strengths between ion pairs. In addition to the complete set of energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility, we also quote results for the single crystal and powder average inelastic neutron scattering structure factors. Examples of the application of these results to experimental systems are also discussed.

We have performed elastic and inelastic neutron experiments on single crystal samples of the coordination polymer compound CuF2(H2O)2(pyz) (pyz=pyrazine) to study the magnetic structure and excitations. The elastic neutron diffraction measurements in dicate a collinear antiferromagnetic structure with moments oriented along the [0.7 0 1] real-space direction and an ordered moment of 0.60 +/- 0.03 muB/Cu. This value is significantly smaller than the single ion magnetic moment, reflecting the presence of strong quantum fluctuations. The spin wave dispersion from magnetic zone center to the zone boundary points (0.5 1.5 0) and (0.5 0 1.5) can be described by a two dimensional Heisenberg model with a nearest neighbor magnetic exchange constant J2d = 0.934 +/-0.0025 meV. The inter-layer interaction Jperp in this compound is less than 1.5% of J2d. The spin excitation energy at the (0.5 0.5 0.5) zone boundary point is reduced when compared to the (0.5 1 0.5) zone boundary point by ~10.3 +/- 1.4 %. This zone boundary dispersion is consistent with quantum Monte Carlo and series expansion calculations which include corrections for quantum fluctuations to linear spin wave theory.
We demonstrate how quantum entanglement can be directly witnessed in the quasi-1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF$_3$. We apply three entanglement witnesses --- one-tangle, two-tangle, and quantum Fisher information --- to its inelastic neutron spect rum, and compare with spectra simulated by finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and classical Monte Carlo methods. We find that each witness provides direct access to entanglement. Of these, quantum Fisher information is the most robust experimentally, and indicates the presence of at least bipartite entanglement up to at least 50 K, corresponding to around 10% of the spinon zone-boundary energy. We apply quantum Fisher information to higher spin-S Heisenberg chains, and show theoretically that the witnessable entanglement gets suppressed to lower temperatures as the quantum number increases. Finally, we outline how these results can be applied to higher dimensional quantum materials to witness and quantify entanglement.
We discuss the structure of topological solitons in a general non-Heisenberg model of isotropic two-dimensional magnet with spin S=1, in the vicinity of a special point where the model symmetry is enhanced to SU(3). It is shown that upon perturbing t he SU(3) symmetry, solitons with odd topological charge become unstable and bind into pairs.

We investigate the magnetic properties of three Mn$_6$ single molecule magnets by means of inelastic neutron scattering and frequency domain magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The experimental data reveal that small structural distortions of the molecu lar geometry produce a significant effect on the energy level diagram and therefore on the magnetic properties of the molecule. We show that the giant spin model completely fails to describe the spin level structure of the ground spin multiplets. We analyze theoretically the spin Hamiltonian for the low spin Mn$_6$ molecule (S=4) and we show that the excited $S$ multiplets play a key role in determining the effective energy barrier for the magnetization reversal, in analogy to what was previously found for the two high spin Mn6 (S=12) molecules [S. Carretta et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 157203 (2008)].

Hexagonal antiferromagnets Cs$_2$Cu$_3$MF$_{12}$ (M = Zr, Hf and Sn) have uniform Kagome lattices of Cu$^{2+}$ with S = 1/2, whereas Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ has a 2a by 2a enlarged cell as compared with the uniform Kagome lattice. The crystal data of Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ synthesized first in the present work are reported. We performed magnetic susceptibility measurements on this family of Kagome antiferromagnet using single crystals. In the Cs$_2$Cu$_3$MF$_{12}$ systems, structural phase transitions were observed at $T_t = 225$ K, 172 K and 185 K for M = Zr, Hf and Sn, respectively. The magnetic susceptibilities observed for $T > T_t$ are almost perfectly described using theoretical results obtained by exact diagonalization for the 24-site Kagome cluster with $J/k_B = 244$ K, 266 K and 240 K, respectively. Magnetic ordering accompanied by the weak ferromagnetic moment occurs at $T_N = 23.5$ K, 24.5 K and 20.0 K, respectively. The origins of the weak ferromagnetic moment should be ascribed to the lattice distortion that breaks the hexagonal symmetry of the exchange network for $T < T_t$ and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ is magnetically described as a modified Kagome antiferromagnet with four types of neighboring exchange interaction. Neither structural nor magnetic phase transition was observed in Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Its magnetic ground state was found to be a spin singlet with a triplet gap. Using exact diagonalization for a 12-site Kagome cluster, we analyzed the magnetic susceptibility and evaluated individual exchange interactions. The causes leading to the different ground states in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ are discussed.
