We report a uniaxial pressure-dependence of magnetism in layered perovskite strontium ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7. By applying a relatively small uniaxial pressure, greater than 0.1 GPa normal to the RuO2 layer, ferromagnetic ordering manifests below 80 K from the enhanced-paramagnet. Magnetization at 1 kOe and 2 K becomes 100 times larger than that under ambient condition. Uniaxial pressure dependence of Curie temperature T_C suggests the first order magnetic transition. Origin of this uniaxial-pressure induced ferromagnetism is discussed in terms of the rotation of RuO6 octahedra within the RuO2 plane.

The antiferromagnet and semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$ has recently attracted a lot of attention due to a wealth of topological phases arising from the interplay of topology and magnetism. In particular, the presence of a single pair of Weyl points is pred icted for a ferromagnetic configuration of Eu spins along the $c$-axis in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. In the search for such phases, we investigate here the effects of hydrostatic pressure in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. For that, we present specific heat, transport and $mu$SR measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to $sim,2.5,$GPa, combined with {it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimentally, we establish that the ground state of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ changes from in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM$_{ab}$) to ferromagnetic at a critical pressure of $,approx,$2,GPa, which is likely characterized by the moments dominantly lying within the $ab$ plane (FM$_{ab}$). The AFM$_{ab}$-FM$_{ab}$ transition at such a relatively low pressure is supported by our DFT calculations. Furthermore, our experimental and theoretical results indicate that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ moves closer to the sought-for FM$_c$ state (moments $parallel$ $c$) with increasing pressure further. We predict that a pressure of $approx$,23,GPa will stabilize the FM$_c$ state, if Eu remains in a 2+ valence state. Thus, our work establishes hydrostatic pressure as a key tuning parameter that (i) allows for a continuous tuning between magnetic ground states in a single sample of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ and (ii) enables the exploration of the interplay between magnetism and topology and thereby motivates a series of future experiments on this magnetic Weyl semimetal.
The perovskite rare-earth titanates are model Mott insulators with magnetic ground states that are sensitive to structural distortions. These distortions couple strongly to the orbital degrees of freedom and, in principle, it should be possible to tu ne the superexchange and to manipulate the Curie temperature ($T_C$) with strain. We investigate the representative system (Y,La,Ca)TiO$_3$, which exhibits low crystallographic symmetry and no structural instabilities. From magnetic susceptibility measurements of $T_C$, we demonstrate direct, reversible and continuous control of ferromagnetism by influencing the TiO$_6$ octahedral tilts and rotations with uniaxial strain. The relative change in $T_C$ as a function of strain is well described by textit{ab initio} calculations, which provides detailed understanding of the complex interactions among structural, orbital and magnetic properties in these compounds. The demonstrated manipulation of octahedral distortions opens up far-reaching possibilities for investigations of electron-lattice coupling, competing ground states and magnetic quantum phase transitions in a wide range of quantum materials.
The spin ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 are experimental and theoretical exemplars of highly frustrated magnetic materials. However, the effects of an applied uniaxial pressure are not well studied, and here we report magnetization measurements of Ho2Ti2O7 under uniaxial pressure applied in the [001], [111] and [110] crystalline directions. The basic features are captured by an extension of the dipolar spin ice model. We find a good match between our model and measurements with pressures applied along two of the three directions, and extend the framework to discuss the influence of crystal misalignment for the third direction. The parameters determined from the magnetization measurements reproduce neutron scattering measurements we perform under uniaxial pressure applied along the [110] crystalline direction. In the detailed analysis we include the recently verified susceptibility dependence of the demagnetizing factor. Our work demonstrates the application of a moderate applied pressure to modify the magnetic interaction parameters. The knowledge can be used to predict critical pressures needed to induce new phases and transitions in frustrated materials, and in the case of Ho2Ti2O7 we expect a transition to a ferromagnetic ground state for uniaxial pressures above 3.3 GPa.

We report on isothermal magnetization, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetostriction as well as temperature-dependent alternating-current (ac) susceptibility, specific heat, and thermal expansion of single crystalline and polycrstalline Li$_2$(Li$_{1- x}$Fe$_x$)N with $x = 0$ and $x approx 0.30$. Magnetic hysteresis emerges at temperatures below $T approx 50,$K with coercivity fields of up to $mu_0H = 11.6,$T at $T = 2,$K and magnetic anisotropy energies of $310,$K ($27,$meV). The ac susceptibility is strongly frequency dependent ($f,=,10$--$10,000,$Hz) and reveals an effective energy barrier for spin reversal of $Delta E approx 1100,$K. The relaxation times follow Arrhenius behavior for $T > 25,$K. For $T < 10,$K, however, the relaxation times of $tau approx 10^{10},$s are only weakly temperature-dependent indicating the relevance of a quantum tunneling process instead of thermal excitations. The magnetic entropy amounts to more than $25,$J mol$^{-1}_{rm Fe},$K$^{-1}$ which significantly exceeds $R$ln2, the value expected for the entropy of a ground state doublet. Thermal expansion and magnetostriction indicate a weak magneto-elastic coupling in accordance with slow relaxation of the magnetization. The classification of Li$_2$(Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)N as ferromagnet is stressed and contrasted with highly anisotropic and slowly relaxing paramagnetic behavior.
A complex interplay of different energy scales involving Coulomb repulsion, spin-orbit coupling and Hunds coupling energy in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) material produces novel emerging physical state. For instance, ferromagnetism in vdW charge transfer insulator CrGeTe$_3$, that provides a promising platform to simultaneously manipulate the magnetic and electrical properties for potential device implementation using few layers thick materials. Here, we show a continuous tuning of magnetic and electrical properties of CrGeTe$_3$ single crystal using pressure. With application of pressure, CrGeTe$_3$ transforms from a FM insulator with Curie temperature, $T_{rm{C}} sim $ 66 K at ambient condition to a correlated 2D Fermi metal with $T_{rm{C}}$ exceeding $sim$ 250 K. Notably, absence of an accompanying structural distortion across the insulator-metal transition (IMT) suggests that the pressure induced modification of electronic ground states are driven by electronic correlation furnishing a rare example of bandwidth-controlled IMT in a vdW material.
