Phonon excitations of fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors nu = 1/3, 2/5, 4/7, 3/5, 4/3, and 5/3 are experimentally shown to be based on Landau level transitions of Composite Fermions. At filling factor nu = 2/3, however, a linear field dependence of the excitation energy in the high-field regime rather hints towards a spin transition excited by the phonons. We propose to explain this surprising observation by an only partially polarized 2/3-ground-state making the energetically lower lying spin transition also allowed for phonon excitations.

We consider graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic field at zero temperature with an integral number of filled Landau levels and study the dispersion of single particle-hole excitations. We first analyze the two-body problem of a single Dirac el ectron and hole in a magnetic field interacting via Coulomb forces. We then turn to the many-body problem, where particle-hole symmetry and the existence of two valleys lead to a number of effects peculiar to graphene. We find that the coupling together of a large number of low-lying excitations leads to strong many-body corrections, which could be observed in inelastic light scattering or optical absorption. We also discuss in detail how the appearance of different branches in the exciton dispersion is sensitive to the number of filled spin and valley sublevels.
The intense search for topological superconductivity is inspired by the prospect that it hosts Majorana quasiparticles. We explore in this work the optimal design for producing topological superconductivity by combining a quantum Hall state with an o rdinary superconductor. To this end, we consider a microscopic model for a topologically trivial two-dimensional p-wave superconductor exposed to a magnetic field, and find that the interplay of superconductivity and Landau level physics yields a rich phase diagram of states as a function of $mu/t$ and $Delta/t$, where $mu$, $t$ and $Delta$ are the chemical potential, hopping strength, and the amplitude of the superconducting gap. In addition to quantum Hall states and topologically trivial p-wave superconductor, the phase diagram also accommodates regions of topological superconductivity. Most importantly, we find that application of a non-uniform, periodic magnetic field produced by a square or a hexagonal lattice of $h/e$ fluxoids greatly facilitates regions of topological superconductivity in the limit of $Delta/trightarrow 0$. In contrast, a uniform magnetic field, a hexagonal Abrikosov lattice of $h/2e$ fluxoids, or a one dimensional lattice of stripes produces topological superconductivity only for sufficiently large $Delta/t$.
The effect of disorder on the Landau levels of massless Dirac fermions is examined for the cases with and without the fermion doubling. To tune the doubling a tight-binding model having a complex transfer integral is adopted to shift the energies of two Dirac cones, which is theoretically proposed earlier and realizable in cold atoms in an optical lattice. In the absence of the fermion doubling, the $n=0$ Landau level is shown to exhibit an anomalous sharpness even if the disorder is uncorrelated in space (i.e., large K-K scattering). This anomaly occurs when the disorder respects the chiral symmetry of the Dirac cone.
Two-dimensional systems with $C_{2}mathcal{T}$ ($Pmathcal{T}$) symmetry exhibit the Euler class topology $Einmathbb{N}$ in each two-band subspace realizing a fragile topology beyond the symmetry indicators. By systematically studying the energy level s of Euler insulating phases in the presence of an external magnetic field, we reveal the robust gaplessness of the Hofstadter butterfly spectrum in the flat-band limit, while for the dispersive bands the gapping of the Landau levels is controlled by a hidden symmetry. We also find that the Euler class $E$ of a two-band subspace gives a lower bound for the Chern numbers of the magnetic subgaps. Our study provides new fundamental insights into the fragile topology of flat-band systems going beyond the special case of $E=1$ as e.g.~in twisted bilayer graphene, thus opening the way to a very rich, still mainly unexplored, topological landscape with higher Euler classes.

Two recent experiments successfully observed Landau levels in the tunneling spectra of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. To mimic the influence of a scanning tunneling microscope tip on the Landau levels we solve the two-dimensional Dirac equation in the presence of a localized electrostatic potential. We find that the STM tip not only shifts the Landau levels, but also suppresses for a realistic choice of parameters the negative branch of Landau levels.
