We report the observation of ferromagnetism at over 900K in Cr-GaN and Cr-AlN thin films. The saturation magnetization moments in our best films of Cr-GaN and Cr-AlN at low temperatures are 0.42 and 0.6 u_B/Cr atom, respectively, indicating that 14% and 20%, of the Cr atoms, respectively, are magnetically active. While Cr-AlN is highly resistive, Cr-GaN exhibits thermally activated conduction that follows the exponential law expected for variable range hopping between localized states. Hall measurements on a Cr-GaN sample indicate a mobility of 0.06 cm^2/V.s, which falls in the range characteristic of hopping conduction, and a free carrier density (1.4E20/cm^3), which is similar in magnitude to the measured magnetically-active Cr concentration (4.9E19/cm^3). A large negative magnetoresistance is attributed to scattering from loose spins associated with non-ferromagnetic impurities. The results indicate that ferromagnetism in Cr-GaN and Cr-AlN can be attributed to the double exchange mechanism as a result of hopping between near-midgap substitutional Cr impurity bands.

High Curie temperature of 900 K has been reported in Cr-doped AlN diluted magnetic semiconductors prepared by various methods, which is exciting for spintronic applications. It is believed that N defects play important roles in achieving the high tem perature ferromagnetism in good samples. Motivated by these experimental advances, we use a full-potential density-functional-theory method and supercell approach to investigate N defects and their effects on ferromagnetism of (Al,Cr)N with N vacancies (V_N). Calculated results are in agreement with experimental observations and facts of real Cr-doped AlN samples and their synthesis. Our first-principles results are useful to elucidating the mechanism for the ferromagnetism and exploring high-performance Cr-doped AlN diluted magnetic semiconductors.

We report a theoretical and experimental investigation of Cr-doped AlN. Density functional calculations predict that the isolated Cr t2 defect level in AlN is 1/3 full, falls approximately at midgap, and broadens into an impurity band for concentrati ons over 5%. Substitutional Al1-xCrxN random alloys with 0.05 <= x <= 0.15 are predicted to have Curie temperatures over 600 K. Experimentally, we have characterized and optimized the molecular beam epitaxy thin film growth process, and observed room temperature ferromagnetism with a coercive field, Hc, of 120 Oersted. The measured magnetic susceptibility indicates that over 33% of the Cr is magnetically active at room temperature and 40% at low temperature.
Kinetics of phase decomposition accompanied by precipitation of sigma-phase in a Fe73.7Cr26.3 alloy isothermally annealed at 832 K was studied by means of Mossbauer spectroscopy. Two stage decomposition process has been revealed by three different qu antities viz. the average hyperfine field, <H>, the short-range parameter, alpha1, and the probability of atomic configuration with no Cr atoms within the first two coordination shells around the probe Fe atoms, P(0,0). The first stage, that has terminated after ca.300 h of annealing, has been associated with the decomposition into Fe-rich phase in which the concentration of Cr, determined as 20.9 at.%, can be interpreted as the border of the metastable miscibility gap at 832 K. The second stage can be regarded as a continuation of the phase decomposition process combined with a precipitation of sigma. The three relevant parameters for this stage have also saturation-like behavior vs. annealing time and the saturation can be interpreted as termination of the two processes. The concentration of Cr in the Fe-rich phase has been determined as 19.8 at.% and this value can be regarded as the limit of Cr solubility in iron at 832 K. Both stages of the kinetics were found to be in line with the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolgomorov equation yielding values of the rate constant and the Avrami exponent. The activation energy of the second-stage process was determined to be by ca.12 kJ/mol higher.
The defect induced magnetism has initiated a lot of interest in field of spintronics. In this regard, SiC is a promising material because of its unique properties under extreme conditions. Hence it will be very much interesting to investigate the int eraction between defects and itinerant carrier in doped SiC for spintronics application. We report the structural stability and magnetic interaction in Cr doped 3C-SiC synthesized by Thermal Plasma Technique. The EPR spectrum of undoped 3C-SiC shows a sharp resonance line corresponding to $g=2.00$ associated with the defects present in the system. Anomalous temperature evolution tendency of the relative intensity of EPR spectra can be attributed to magnetically correlated defects in the host matrix. For the first time we report the detailed quantitative analysis of X-band and Q-band EPR study in Cr doped 3C-SiC which reveals that Cr can be in multivalent state. The non monotonous variation of Longitudinal Mode (LO) of the Raman spectra has been explained based on the interaction between carriers and surface plasmon using Longitudinal optical plasmon coupling model (LOPC). The carrier density calculated by using LOPC fit with experimental data varies from $1.8times10^{15}$ to $4.2times10^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$. Room temperature magnetic measurements exhibit ferromagnetic behavior with non-zero coercivity for all the samples up to 7 T field. We, for the first time, show the Curie temperature to be above 760 K. Quantitative analysis of magnetic interaction validates the applicability of Bound Magnetic Polaron Model (BMP) which probably arises from the exchange interaction of Cr$^{3+}$ ions with related (Si, C) defects. The polaron density estimated from the BMP fit agrees well with the carrier density obtained from the line shape fitting of Raman spectra.
We study the magnetization and the spin dynamics of the Cr$_7$Ni ring-shaped magnetic cluster. Measurements of the magnetization at high pulsed fields and low temperature are compared to calculations and show that the spin Hamiltonian approach provid es a good description of Cr$_7$Ni magnetic molecule. In addition, the phonon-induced relaxation dynamics of molecular observables has been investigated. By assuming the spin-phonon coupling to take place through the modulation of the local crystal fields, it is possible to evaluate the decay of fluctuations of two generic molecular observables. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ directly probes such fluctuations, and allows to determine the magnetoelastic coupling strength.
