We describe the relation between spin fluctuations and superconductivity in a highly-ordered sample of YBaCu3O6.5 using both polarized and unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering. The spin susceptibility in the superconducting phase exhibits one-dimensional incommensurate modulations at low-energies, consistent with hydrodynamic stripes. With increasing energy the susceptibility curves upward to a commensurate, intense, well-defined and asymmetric resonance at 33 meV with a precipitous high-energy cutoff. In the normal phase, which we show is gapless, the resonance remains surprisingly strong and persists clearly in Q scans and energy scans. Its similar asymmetric spectral form above Tc=59 K suggests that incoherent superconducting pairing fluctuations are present in the normal state. On cooling, the resonance and the stripe modulations grow in well above Tc below a temperature that is comparable to the pseudogap temperature where suppression occurs in local and low-momentum properties. The spectral weight that accrues to the resonance is largely acquired by transfer from suppressed low-energy fluctuations. We find the resonance to be isotropically polarized, consistent with a triplet carrying ~2.6% of the total spectral weight of the Cu spins in the planes.

We report measurements of the photoinduced change in reflectivity of an untwinned single crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.5 in the ortho II structure. The decay rate of the transient change in reflectivity is found to decrease rapidly with decreasing temperature and, below Tc, with decreasing laser intensity. We interpret the decay as a process of thermalization of antinodal quasiparticles, whose rate is determined by an inelastic scattering rate of quasiparticle pairs.
Magnetic field induced antiferromagnetic phase of the underdoped cuprates is studied within the t-t-J model. A magnetic field suppresses the pairing amplitude, which in turn may induce antiferromagnetism. We apply our theory to interpret the recently reported quantum oscillations in high magnetic field in ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.5 and propose that the total hole density abstracted from the oscillation period is reduced by 50% due to the antiferromagnetism.
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on antiferromagnetic (AF) (T_N=5.2K) HoNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and two different superconducting (SC) states (T_c=8.5K and $T_c^*=5.6K) are reported. The PC study of the electron-boson(phonon) interaction (EB(P)I) spectral function reveals pronounced phonon maxima at 16, 22 and 34meV. For the first time the high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV are resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the 10-meV peak in PC EPI constant lambda_PC is evaluated as 20-30%, while contribution of the high energy modes at 50 and 100meV amounts about 10% for each maxima, so the superconductivity might be affected by CEF excitations. The SC gap in HoNi2B2C exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, but vanishes at $T_c^*=5.6K<T_c, with 2Delta/kT_c^*=3.9. The strong coupling Eliashberg analysis of the low-temperature SC phase with T_c^*=5.6K =T_N, coexisting with the commensurate AF structure, suggests a sizable value of the EPI constant lambda_s=0.93. We also provide strong support for the recently proposed by us Fermi surface (FS) separation scenario for the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in magnetic borocarbides, namely, that the superconductivity in the commensurate AF phase survives at a special (nearly isotropic) FS sheet without an admixture of Ho 5d states. Above T_c^* the SC features in the PC characteristics are strongly suppressed pointing to a specific weakened SC state between T_c* and T_c.
We report on the synthesis of superconducting single crystals of FeSe, and their characterization by X-ray diffraction, magnetization and resistivity. We have performed ac susceptibility measurements under high pressure in a hydrostatic liquid argon medium up to 14 GPa and we find that TC increases up to 33-36 K in all samples, but with slightly different pressure dependences on different samples. Above 12 GPa no traces of superconductivity are found in any sample. We have also performed a room temperature high pressure X-ray diffraction study up to 12 GPa on a powder sample, and we find that between 8.5 GPa and 12 GPa, the tetragonal PbO structure undergoes a structural transition to a hexagonal structure. This transition results in a volume decrease of about 16%, and is accompanied by the appearance of an intermediate, probably orthorhombic phase.
Superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides like 2H-NbSe2 in their two-dimensional form (2D) exhibit a special form of Ising superconductivity in which the quasiparticle spins are firmly pinned in the direction perpendicular to the basal plane. This enables them to withstand exceptionally high magnetic fields far beyond the Pauli limit for superconductivity. We use field-angle-resolved magnetoresistance experiments for magnetic fields strictly rotated in the basal plane to investigate the dependence of the upper critical field (Hc2) on the orientation of the field in the plane. The field angle dependence of Hc2 directly reflects the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. We observe a transformation from a six-fold nodal symmetry near Hc2(T) to a two-fold nodeless symmetry at lower temperatures. While the first phase agrees with theoretical predictions of a nodal topological superconducting phase, the observation of a second distinct superconducting phase with nodeless two-fold symmetry is unexpected and contradicts the crystalline symmetry. It may therefore be another example of an unconventional nematic superconducting phase besides doped superconducting Bi2Se3, and we demonstrate that in NbSe2 such a nematic state can indeed arise from the presence of several competing superconducting channels.
