Polarized Raman and optical spectra for the quasi one-dimensional metallic vanadate beta-Na0.33V2O3 are reported for various temperatures. The spectra are discussed in the light of the sodium and charge ordering transitions occurring in this material, and demonstrate the presence of strong electron phonon coupling.

Using first principle band structure calculations, we critically examine results of resonant x-ray scattering experiments which is believed to directly probe charge and orbital ordering. Considering the specific case of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, we show that t his technique actually probes most directly and sensitively small structural distortions in the system. Such distortions, often difficult to detect with more conventional techniques, invariably accompany and usually cause the orbital and charge orderings. In this sense, this technique is only an indirect probe of such types of ordering. Our results also provide a microscopic explanation of the novel types of charge and orbital ordering realized in this system and other doped manganites.
We have analyzed the experimental evidence of charge and orbital ordering in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 using first principles band structure calculations. Our results suggest the presence of two types of Mn sites in the system. One of the Mn sites behaves like an Mn(3+) ion, favoring a Jahn-Teller distortion of the surrounding oxygen atoms, while the distortion around the other is not a simple breathing mode kind. Band structure effects are found to dominate the experimental spectrum for orbital and charge ordering, providing an alternate explanation for the experimentally observed results.
At ambient temperatures, CeRuSn exhibits an extraordinary structure with a coexistence of two types of Ce ions in a metallic environment, namely trivalent Ce3+ and intermediate valent Ce(4-x)+. Charge ordering produces a doubling of the unit cell alo ng the c-axis with respect to the basic monoclinic CeCoAl type structure. Below room temperature, a phase transition with very broad hysteresis has been observed in various bulk properties like electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. The present x-ray diffraction results show that at low temperatures the doubling of the CeCoAl type structure is replaced by an ill-defined modulated ground state. In this state, at least three different modulation periods compete, with the dominant mode close to a tripling of the basic cell. The transition is accompanied by a significant contraction of the c axis. XANES data suggest that the average Ce valence remains constant, thus the observed c axis contraction is not due to any valence transition. We propose a qualitative structure model with modified stacking sequences of Ce3+ and Ce(4-x)+ layers in the various modulated phases. Surprisingly, far below 100 K the modulated state is sensitive to x-ray irradiation at photon fluxes available at a synchrotron. With photon fluxes of order 10E12/s, the modulated ground state can be destroyed on a timescale of minutes and the doubling of the CeCoAl cell observed at room temperature is recovered. The final state is metastable at 10 K. Heating the sample above 60 K again leads to a recovery of the modulated state. Thus, CeRuSn exhibits both thermally and x-ray induced reversible transformations of the Ce3+/Ce(4-x)+ charge ordering pattern. Such a behavior is unique among any know intermetallic compound.

We systematically study Raman spectroscopy of cleaved Na$_x$CoO$_2$ single crystals with 0.37 $leq$ x $leq$ 0.80. The Raman shift of A$_{1g}$ mode is found to be linearly dependent on Na content, while the Raman shift of E$_{1g}$ mode has an abnormal shift to high frequency around x = 0.5. The abnormal shift is ascribed to the occurrence of Na rearrangement in O1 structure. Temperature dependent Raman spectrum for x = 0.56 sample shows that Na rearrangement transition from O1 structure to H1 structure occurs around 240 K. Electronic transport and susceptibility for the sample with $x=0.56$ show a response to the Na rearrangement transition from O1 to H1 structure, and that different Na ordering pattern causes distinct physical properties. These results give a direct evidence to proved Na ordering effect on physical properties of Co-O plane.

The crystal and magnetic structures of the three-leg ladder compound Fe3BO5 have been investigated by single crystal x-ray diffraction and neutron powder diffraction. Fe3BO5 contains two types of three-leg spin ladders. It shows a charge ordering tra nsition at 283 K, an antiferromagnetic transition at 112 K, ferromagnetism below 70 K and a weak ferromagnetic behavior below 40K. The x-ray data reveal a smooth charge ordering and an incomplete charge localization down to 110K. Below the first magnetic transition, the first type of ladders orders as ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic chains, while below 70K the second type of ladders orders as antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic chains.
