Shubnikov-de Haas data is presented for a p-SiGe sample exhibiting strongly insulating behaviour at nu = 3/2. In addition to the fixed points defining a high field metal- insulator transition into this phase separate fixed points can also be identified for the nu = 3 --> 2 and 2 --> 1 Integer quantum Hall transitions. Another feature of the data, that the Hall resistivity approaches zero in the insulating phase, indicates it is not a re-entrant Hall insulator. The behaviour is explained in terms of the strong exchange interactions. At integer filling factors these cause the 0 uparrow and 1 downarrow Landau levels to cross and be well separated but at non-integer values of nu screening reduces exchange effects and causes the levels to stick together. It is suggested the insulating behaviour, and high field metal/insulator transition, is a consequence of the strong exchange interactions.

We report magnetotransport measurements of fractional quantum Hall states in an AlAs quantum well around Landau level filling factor nu = 3/2, demonstrating that the quasiparticles are composite Fermions (CFs) with a valley degree of freedom. By moni toring the valley level crossings for these states as a function of applied symmetry-breaking strain, we determine the CF valley susceptibility and polarization. The data can be explained well by a simple Landau level fan diagram for CFs, and are in nearly quantitative agreement with the results reported for CF spin polarization.

When a gas of electrons is confined to two dimensions, application of a strong magnetic field may lead to startling phenomena such as emergence of electron pairing. According to a theory this manifests itself as appearance of the fractional quantum H all effect with a quantized conductivity at an unusual half-integer nu=5/2 Landau level filling. Here we show that similar electron pairing may occur in quantum dots where the gas of electrons is trapped by external electric potentials into small quantum Hall droplets. However, we also find theoretical and experimental evidence that, depending on the shape of the external potential, the paired electron state can break down, which leads to a fragmentation of charge and spin densities into incompressible domains. The fragmentation of the quantum Hall states could be an issue in the proposed experiments that aim to probe for non-abelian quasi-particle characteristics of the nu=5/2 quantum Hall state.
We report the observation of an electron gas in a SiGe/Si/SiGe quantum well with maximum mobility up to 240 m^2/Vs, which is noticeably higher than previously reported results in silicon-based structures. Using SiO, rather than Al_2O_3, as an insulat or, we obtain strongly reduced threshold voltages close to zero. In addition to the predominantly small-angle scattering well known in the high-mobility heterostructures, the observed linear temperature dependence of the conductivity reveals the presence of a short-range random potential.
There is increasing experimental evidence for fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ u=2+3/8$. Modeling it as a system of composite fermions, we study the problem of interacting composite fermions by a number of methods. In our variationa l study, we consider the Fermi sea, the Pfaffian paired state, and bubble and stripe phases of composite fermions, and find that the Fermi sea state is favored for a wide range of transverse thickness. However, when we incorporate interactions between composite fermions through composite-fermion diagonalization on systems with up to 25 composite fermions, we find that a gap opens at the Fermi level, suggesting that inter-composite fermion interaction can induce fractional quantum Hall effect at $ u=2+3/8$. The resulting state is seen to be distinct from the Pfaffian wave function.
We show that in dilute metallic p-SiGe heterostructures, magnetic field can cause multiple quantum Hall-insulator-quantum Hall transitions. The insulating states are observed between quantum Hall states with filling factors u=1 and 2 and, for the fi rst time, between u=2 and 3 and between u=4 and 6. The latter are in contradiction with the original global phase diagram for the quantum Hall effect. We suggest that the application of a (perpendicular) magnetic field induces insulating behavior in metallic p-SiGe heterostructures in the same way as in Si MOSFETs. This insulator is then in competition with, and interrupted by, integer quantum Hall states leading to the multiple re-entrant transitions. The phase diagram which accounts for these transition is similar to that previously obtained in Si MOSFETs thus confirming its universal character.
