The phonon-mode decomposition of the electron-phonon coupling in the MgB2-like system Li_{1-x}BC is explored using first principles calculations. It is found that the high temperature superconductivity of such systems results from extremely strong coupling to only ~2% of the phonon modes. Novel characteristics of E_2g branches include (1) ``mode lambda values of 25 and greater compared to a mean of $sim 0.4$ for other modes, (2) a precipitous Kohn anomaly, and (3) E_2g phonon linewidths within a factor of ~2 of the frequency itself, indicating impending breakdown of linear electron-phonon theory. This behavior in borne out by recent inelastic x-ray scattering studies of MgB2 by Shukla et al.

Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is one of the most common and fundamental interactions in solids. It not only dominates many basic dynamic processes like resistivity, thermal conductivity etc, but also provides the pairing glue in conventional superco nductors. But in high-temperature superconductors (HTSC), it is still controversial whether or not EPC is in favor of paring. Despite the controversies, many experiments have provided clear evidence for EPC in HTSC. In this paper, we briefly review EPC in cuprate and iron-based superconducting systems revealed by Raman scattering. We introduce how to extract the coupling information through phonon lineshape. Then we discuss the strength of EPC in different HTSC systems and possible factors affecting the strength. The comparative study between Raman phonon theories and experiments allows us to gain insight into some crucial electronic properties, especially superconductivity. Finally we summarize and compare EPC in the two existing HTSC systems, and discuss what role it may play in HTSC.

Superconductivity arises from two distinct quantum phenomena: electron pairing and long-range phase coherence. In conventional superconductors, the two quantum phenomena generally take place simultaneously, while the electron pairing occurs at higher temperature than the long-range phase coherence in the underdoped high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Recently, whether electron pairing is also prior to long-range phase coherence in single-layer FeSe film on SrTiO3 substrate is under debate. Here, by measuring Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, we unambiguously reveal a pseudogap behavior below Tp ~ 60 K in two layered FeSe-based superconductors with quasi-two-dimension. In the pseudogap regime, a weak diamagnetic signal and a remarkable Nernst effect are also observed, which indicate that the observed pseudogap behavior is related to superconducting fluctuations. These works confirm that strong phase fluctuation is an important character in the two-dimensional iron-based superconductors as widely observed in high-Tc cuprate superconductors.

Linear response methods are applied to identify the increase in electron-phonon coupling in elemental yttrium that is responsible for its high superconducting critical temperature Tc, which reaches nearly 20 K at 115 GPa. While the evolution of the b and structure and density of states is smooth and seemingly modest, there is strong increase in the 4d content of the occupied conduction states under pressure. We find that the transverse mode near the L point of the fcc Brillouin zone, already soft at ambient pressure, becomes unstable (in harmonic approximation) at a relative volume V/Vo=0.60 (P ~ 42 GPa). The coupling to transverse branches is relatively strong at all high symmetry zone boundary points X, K, and L. Coupling to the longitudinal branches is not as strong, but extends over more regions of the Brillouin zone and involves higher frequencies. Evaluation of the electron-phonon spectral function $alpha^2F(omega)$ shows a very strong increase with pressure of coupling in the 2-7 meV range, with a steady increase also in the 7-20 meV range. These results demonstrates strong electron-phonon coupling in this system that can account for the observed range of Tc.

Very recently a new family of layered materials, containing BiS2 planes was discovered to be superconducting at temperatures up to Tc=10 K, raising questions about the mechanism of superconductivity in these systems. Here, we present state-of-the-art first principles calculations that directly address this question and reveal several surprising findings. The parent compound LaOBiS2 possesses anharmonic ferroelectric soft phonons at the zone center with a rather large polarization of $approx 10 mu C/cm^2$, which is comparable to the well-known ferroelectric BiFeO3. Upon electron doping, new unstable phonon branches appear along the entire line Q=(q,q,0), causing Bi/S atoms to order in a one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW). We find that BiS2 is a strong electron-phonon coupled superconductor in the vicinity of competing ferroelectric and CDW phases. Our results suggest new directions to tune the balance between these phases and increase Tc in this new class of materials.
We report on Raman scattering experiments of the undoped SrFe2As2 and superconducting Sr0.85K0.15Fe2As2 (Tc=28K) and Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2 (Tc=32K) single crystals. The frequency and linewidth of the B1g mode at 210 cm-1 exhibits an appreciable temperatu re dependence induced by the superconducting and spin density wave transitions. We give estimates of the electron-phonon coupling related to this renormalization. In addition, we observe a pronounced quasi-elastic Raman response for the undoped compound, suggesting persisting magnetic fluctuations to low temperatures. In the superconducting state the renormalization of an electronic continuum is observed with a threshold energy of 61cm-1.
