We have studied a spectrum of Q0122+0338 (z = 1.202) obtained by the FOS on board HST. We present the analysis of three associated absorption systems at z = 1.207, 1.199 and 1.166. The most complex of these at z = 1.207 shows strong absorption from the highly ionized transitions of Lyman alpha, Lyman beta, N V, O VI, Si III, Si IV, and possibly P V. We derive minimal ionic column densities and compare them with those predicted from numerical photoionization models. We find that conditions in the absorbing gas are consistent with an absorber with metallicity twice solar and a total absorbing column density of N(H) = 2*10^19 cm^2. The kinematics of the absorption lines in the z = 1.207 system suggest that a correlation exists between the relative velocity and the creation ionization potential energy for each transition. This is evidence that a complex, multi-component absorber exists. Althought the location of the absorber is uncertain, we consider the origin of this absorption system using the available data and discuss how the high-ionization, and high-metallicity indicate that the absorber may be intrinsic to Q0122+0338.

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8$sq$deg) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W exposures with 50% completeness for sources 0.5arcsec in diameter at I$_{AB} $ = 26.0 mag. The ACS imaging is a key part of the COSMOS survey, providing very high sensitivity and high resolution (0.09arcsec FWHM, 0.05arcsec pixels) imaging and detecting 1.2 million objects to a limiting magnitude of 26.5 (AB). These images yield resolved morphologies for several hundred thousand galaxies. The small HST PSF also provides greatly enhanced sensitivity for weak lensing investigations of the dark matter distribution.
A search for novae in M49 (NGC 4472) has been undertaken with the Hubble Space Telescope. A 55-day observing campaign in F555W (19 epochs) and F814W (five epochs) has led to the discovery of nine novae. We find that M49 may be under-abundant in slow, faint novae relative to the Milky Way and M31. Instead, the decline rates of the M49 novae are remarkably similar to those of novae in the LMC. This fact argues against a simple classification of novae in bulge and disk sub-classes. We examine the Maximum-Magnitude versus Rate of Decline (MMRD) relation for novae in M49, finding only marginal agreement with the Galactic and M31 MMRD relations. A recalibration of the Buscombe-de Vaucouleurs relation gives an absolute magnitude 15 days past maximum of M_{V,15} = -6.36+/-0.19, which is substantially brighter than previous calibrations based on Galactic novae. Monte Carlo simulations yield a global nova rate for M49 of 100{+35}{-30} per year, and a luminosity-specific nova rate in the range u_K = 1.7-2.5 per year per 10^{-10} L_K,solar. These rates are far lower than those predicted by current models of nova production in elliptical galaxies and may point to a relative scarity of novae progenitors, or an increased recurrence timescale, in early-type environments.
We present an F606W-F814W color-magnitude diagram for the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy based on Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images. The luminosity function is well-sampled to 3 magnitudes below the turn-off. We see no evidence for multiple turnoffs and conclude that, at least over the field of the view of the WFPC2, star formation was primarily single-epoch. If the observed number of blue stragglers is due to extended star formation, then roughly 6% (upper limit) of the stars could be half as old as the bulk of the galaxy. The color difference between the red giant branch and the turnoff is consistent with an old population and is very similar to that observed in the old, metal-poor Galactic globular clusters M68 and M92. Despite its red horizontal branch, Draco appears to be older than M68 and M92 by 1.6 +/- 2.5 Gyrs, lending support to the argument that the ``second parameter which governs horizontal branch morphology must be something other than age. Dracos observed luminosity function is very similar to that of M68, and the derived initial mass function is consistent with that of the solar neighborhood.

As one of the most luminous radio-loud quasars showing intrinsic ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray absorption, 3C 351 provides a laboratory for studying the kinematics and physical conditions of such ionized absorbers. We present an analysis of the intrinsi c absorption lines in the high-resolution ($sim$ 7 km/s) far-UV spectrum which was obtained from observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The spectrum spans wavelengths from 1150 AA to 1710 AA, and shows strong emission lines from O VI and Ly$alpha$. Associated absorption lines are present on the blue wings of the high-ionization emission doublets O VI $lambdalambda$ 1032,1038 and N V $lambdalambda$ 1238,1242, as well as the Lyman lines through Ly$epsilon$. These intrinsic absorption features are resolved into several distinct kinematic components, covering rest-frame velocities from -40 to -2800 km/s, with respect to the systemic redshift of $z_{em}=0.3721$. For the majority of these absorption line regions, strong evidence of partial covering of both the background continuum source and the BELR is found, which supports the intrinsic absorption origin and rules out the possibility that the absorption arises in some associated cluster of galaxies. The relationship between the far-UV absorbers and X-ray `warm absorbers are studied with the assistance of photoionization models. Most of the UV associated absorption components have low values of the ionization parameter and total hydrogen column densities, which is inconsistent with previous claims that the UV and X-ray absorption arises in the same material. Analysis of these components supports a picture with a wide range of ionization parameters, temperatures, and column densities in AGN outflows.
We present a catalogue of absorption lines obtained from the analysis of the ultra-violet spectra of 66 quasars. The data were acquired with the Faint Object Spectrograph of the HST as part of the Quasar Absorption Line Survey, a Key Project for the first four cycles of HST observations. This is the third of a series of catalogues of absorption lines produced from the survey and increases the number of quasars whose higher resolution (R=1300) spectra we have published from 17 to 83. The general properties and execution of the survey are reviewed, including descriptions of the final sample of observed objects and the algorithmic processes used to construct the catalogue. The detection of a single damped Ly-a system in a path length of Delta_z=49 yields an observed number of damped systems per unit redshift of (dN/dz)_{damp}(z=0.58)=0.020 with 95% confidence boundaries of 0.001 to 0.096 systems per unit redshift. We include notes on our analysis of each of the observed quasars and the absorption systems detected in each spectrum. Some especially interesting systems include low redshift Ly-a absorbers suitable for extensive follow-up observations (in the spectra of TON28 and PG1216+069), possibly physically associated pairs of extensive metal line absorption systems (e.g., in the spectrum of PG0117+213), and systems known to be associated with galaxies (e.g., in the spectrum of 3C232).
