We present ROSAT HRI data of the distant and X-ray luminous (L_x(bol)=2.6^ {+0.4}_{-0.2} 10^{45}erg/sec) cluster of galaxies 3C 295. We fit both a one-dimensional and a two-dimensional isothermal beta-model to the data, the latter one taking into account the effects of the point spread function (PSF). For the error analysis of the parameters of the two-dimensional model we introduce a Monte-Carlo technique. Applying a substructure analysis, by subtracting a cluster model from the data, we find no evidence for a merger, but we see a decrement in emission South-East of the center of the cluster, which might be due to absorption. We confirm previous results by Henry & Henriksen(1986) that 3C 295 hosts a cooling flow. The equations for the simple and idealized cooling flow analysis presented here are solely based on the isothermal beta-model, which fits the data very well, including the center of the cluster. We determine a cooling flow radius of 60-120kpc and mass accretion rates of dot{M}=400-900 Msun/y, depending on the applied model and temperature profile. We also investigate the effects of the ROSAT PSF on our estimate of dot{M}, which tends to lead to a small overestimate of this quantity if not taken into account. This increase of dot{M} (10-25%) can be explained by a shallower gravitational potential inferred by the broader overall profile caused by the PSF, which diminishes the efficiency of mass accretion. We also determine the total mass of the cluster using the hydrostatic approach. At a radius of 2.1 Mpc, we estimate the total mass of the cluster (M{tot}) to be (9.2 +/- 2.7) 10^{14}Msun. For the gas to total mass ratio we get M{gas}/M{tot} =0.17-0.31, in very good agreement with the results for other clusters of galaxies, giving strong evidence for a low density universe.

The goal of this work is to study the incidence rate of cooling flows in the high redshift clusters using Chandra observations of z>0.5 objects from a new large, X-ray selected catalog. We find that only a very small fraction of high-z objects have c uspy X-ray brightness profiles, which is a characteristic feature of the cooling flow clusters at z~0. The observed lack of cooling flows is most likely a consequence of a higher rate of major mergers at z>0.5.
We present optical spectra, obtained with the Keck 10-m telescope, of two high-redshift type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the High-z Supernova Search Team: SN 1999ff at z=0.455 and SN 1999fv at z~1.2, the highest-redshift published SN Ia spec trum. Both SNe were at maximum light when the spectra were taken. We compare our high-z spectra with low-z normal and peculiar SNe Ia as well as with SNe Ic, Ib, and II. There are no significant differences between SN 1999ff and normal SNe Ia at low redshift. SN 1999fv appears to be a SN Ia and does not resemble the most peculiar nearby SNe Ia.

We have used HST I-band images to identify Mrk 273X, the very unusual high-redshift X-ray-luminous Seyfert 2 galaxy found by ROSAT in the same field-of-view as Mrk 273. We have measured the photometric properties of Mrk 273X and have also analyzed th e luminosity distribution of the faint galaxy population seen in the HST image. The luminosity of the galaxy and the properties of the surrounding environment suggest that Mrk 273X is the brightest galaxy in a relatively poor cluster at a redshift near 0.46. Its off-center location in the cluster and the presence of other galaxy groupings in the HST image may indicate that this is a dynamically young cluster on the verge of merging with its neighboring clusters. We find that Mrk 273X is a bright featureless elliptical galaxy with no evidence for a disk. It follows the de Vaucouleurs (r^{1/4}) surface brightness law very well over a range of 8 magnitudes. Though the surface brightness profile does not appear to be dominated by the AGN, the galaxy has very blue colors that do appear to be produced by the AGN. Mrk 273X is most similar to the IC 5063 class of active galaxies --- a hybrid Sy 2 / powerful radio galaxy.

We discuss the properties of galaxies around the radio galaxy 3C 324 at z=1.2 based on BVRIK multi-band imaging data. We have applied a photometric-redshift technique to objects in the 3C 324 field, and identified 35 objects as plausible cluster memb ers. We have found that red and luminous members are concentrated in a small region enclosed by a circle of 40 radius (0.33 Mpc at z=1.2 for Omega_0=0.3, lambda_0=0.7, H_0=70km/s/Mpc cosmology) from the 3C 324 galaxy. The 3C 324 cluster is probably much more compact in size compared with the local clusters. We constructed a K-band luminosity function of the cluster members and fit a Schechter function, and found the characteristic magnitude to be K*_{AB}=20.2+-0.6. This value is consistent with the extrapolation of the pure passive evolution seen for z<1 clusters. We have identified eight bright galaxies which form a red color-magnitude sequence. The slope of the sequence is consistent with the passive evolution model down to K_{AB}<22; we also found that there is no clear age variation in these bright red galaxies. However, seven out of these eight galaxies exhibit a significant excess in the rest UV light with respect to the passive evolution model. This may suggest that the massive early-type galaxies in this high-redshift cluster are still forming stars to some extent. We have confirmed a truncation of the color-magnitude sequence at K_{AB}sim22; faint passively-evolving galaxies may not yet be present in this cluster at zsim1.2. The overall color distribution of the cluster members, selected by the photometric redshift technique, is found to be very broad. We derived the fraction of blue galaxies in this cluster following a
We present an analysis of the Chandra X-ray observation of Abell 2052, including large scale properties of the cluster as well as the central region which includes the bright radio source, 3C 317. We present temperature and abundance profiles using b oth projected and deprojected spectral analyses. The cluster shows the cooling flow signatures of excess surface brightness above a beta- model at the cluster center, and a temperature decline into the center of the cluster. The heavy element abundances initially increase into the center, but decline within 30 arcsec. Temperature and abundance maps show that the X-ray bright shells surrounding the radio source are the coolest and least abundant regions in the cluster. The mass-deposition rate in the cooling flow is 26 < Mdot < 42 Msun/yr. This rate is ~ a factor of three lower than the rates found with previous X-ray observatories. Based on a stellar population analysis using imaging and spectra at wavelengths spanning the far UV to the NIR, we find a star formation rate of 0.6 Msun/yr within a 3 arcsec radius of the nucleus of the central cluster galaxy. Total and gas mass profiles for the cluster are also determined. We investigate additional sources of pressure in the X-ray holes formed by the radio source, and limit the temperature of any hot, diffuse, thermal component which provides the bulk of the pressure in the holes to kT > 20 keV. We calculate the magnetic field in the bright-shell region and find B ~ 11 muG. The current luminosity of the central AGN is L_X = 7.9 x 10^41 erg/s, and its spectrum is well-fitted by a power-law model with no excess absorption above the Galactic value. The energy output from several radio outbursts, occurring episodically over the lifetime of the cluster, may be sufficient to offset the cooling flow near the center. (Abridged)
