We present in this paper a detailed study of the kinematical properties of the ionized gas around the young massive star clusters in the nucleus of NGC 4214. The analysis is based on bidimensional spectroscopical data, allowing to derive the spatial variation of different properties (intensity, velocity and width / line splitting) of the emission lines Halpha and [O III] lambda 5007 along the nuclear region. We have found that the Giant H II region around the two most massive clusters in NGC 4214 (A and B) is resolved into two clearly separated regions. We have not detected superbubbles with the properties we would expect according to the evolutionary state of the stellar clusters, but just a partial ring feature around the most massive one and two expanding shells around cluster B. The first expanding shell seems to have experienced blowout, whereas the second one is still complete. A possible explanation to this phenomenon is that the most massive stars in a starburst spend a large fraction of their lives buried inside their original molecular clouds. Champagne flows might have formed at the borders of the regions, especially on the SE complex, explaining the existence of the diffuse ionized gas around the galaxy. As a consequence of these results we postulate that NGC 4214 is indeed a dwarf spiral galaxy, with a thin (around 200 pc) disk that inhibits the formation of large scale structures in the ISM. The mechanical input deposited by the star formation complexes, in a variety of physical processes that include the free expanding bubbles liberated after blowout and photoevaporation of the parent clouds, have succeeded in generating the structures now detected far from the disk, giving place to the large-scale structure which now enriches the optical appearance of the galaxy.

We present new H alpha and [O III] 5007 narrow band images of the starbursting dwarf galaxy NGC 4214, obtained with the WFPC2 onboard HST, together with VLA observations of the same galaxy. The HST images resolve features down to physical scales of 2 -5 pc, revealing several young (<10 Myr) star forming complexes of various ionized gas morphologies (compact knots, complete or fragmentary shells) and sizes (10-200 pc). Our results are consistent with a uniform set of evolutionary trends: The youngest, smaller, filled regions that presumably are those just emerging from dense star forming clouds, tend to be of high excitation and are highly obscured. Evolved, larger shell-like regions have lower excitation and are less extincted due of the action of stellar winds and supernovae. In at least one case we find evidence for induced star formation which has led to a two-stage starburst. Age estimates based on W(H alpha) measurements do not agree with those inferred from wind-driven shell models of expanding H II regions. The most likely explanation for this effect is the existence of a 2 Myr delay in the formation of superbubbles caused by the pressure exerted by the high density medium in which massive stars are born. We report the detection of a supernova remnant embedded in one of the two large H II complexes of NGC 4214. The dust in NGC 4214 is not located in a foreground screen but is physically associated with the warm ionized gas.

We report here the results of deep optical spectroscopy of the very extended emission-line region (VEELR) found serendipitously around the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388 in the Virgo cluster using the Subaru Telescope. The H-alpha recession velocities of most of the filaments of the region observed are highly blue-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The velocity field is complicated, and from the kinematic and morphological points of view, there seem to be several streams of filaments: low velocity (v = -100 km/s) filaments, high velocity (v = -300 km/s) filaments, and a very high velocity (v > -500 km/s) cloud complex. The emission-line ratios of the VEELR filaments are well explained by power-law photoionization models with solar abundances, suggesting that the Seyfert nucleus of NGC 4388 is the dominant ionization source of the VEELR and that the VEELR gas has moderate metallicity. In addition to photoionization, shock heating probably contributes to the ionization of the gas. In particular, the filaments outside the ionization cone of the Seyfert nucleus are mainly excited by shocks. We conclude that the VEELR was formerly the disk gas of NGC 4388, which has been stripped by ram pressure due to the interaction between the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) and the galaxy. The velocity field and the morphology of the VEELR closely resemble snapshots from some numerical simulations of this process. In the case of NGC 4388, the ram pressure-stripped gas, which is normally seen as extended HI filaments, happens to be exposed and ionized by the radiation from the AGN, and so can be seen as optical emission-line gas.

ABRIDGED: NGC5253 was previously studied by our group with the aim to elucidate in detail the starburst interaction processes. Some open issues regarding the 2D structure of the main properties of the ionized gas remain to be addressed. Using IFS dat a obtained with FLAMES, we derived 2D maps for different tracers of electron density (n_e), electron temperature (T_e) and ionization degree. The maps for n_e as traced by several line ratios are compatible with a 3D stratified view of the nebula with the highest n_e in the innermost layers and a decrease of n_e outwards. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a T_e map based on [SII] lines for an extragalactic object is presented. The joint interpretation of our two T_e maps is consistent with a T_e structure in 3D with higher temperatures close to the main ionizing source surrounded by a colder and more diffuse component. The highest ionization degree is found at the peak of emission for the gas with relatively high ionization in the main GHIIR and lower ionization degree delineating the more extended diffuse component. Abundances for O, Ne and Ar are constant over the mapped area within <0.1 dex. The mean 12+log(O/H) is 8.26 while the relative abundances of log(N/O), log(Ne/O) and log(Ar/O) were sim-1.32, -0.65 and -2.33, respectively. There are two locations with enhanced N/O. The first (log(N/O)sim-0.95) is associated to two super star clusters. The second (log(N/O)sim-1.17), reported here for the first time, is associated to two moderately massive (2-4x10^4 M_sun) and relatively old (sim10 Myr) clusters. A comparison of the N/O map with those produced by strong line methods supports the use of N2O2 over N2S2 in the search for chemical inhomogeneities within a galaxy. The results on the localized nitrogen enhancement were used to compile and discuss the factors that affect the complex relationship between Wolf-Rayet stars and N/O excess.

(ABRIDGED) We present an analysis of NGC588 based on IFS data with PMAS, together with Spitzer images at 8 mi and 24 mi. The extinction distribution in the optical shows complex structure, with maxima correlating in position with those of the emissio n at 24 mi and 8 mi. The Ha luminosity absorbed by the dust within the GHIIR reproduces the structure observed in the 24 mi image, supporting the use of this band as a tracer of recent star formation. A velocity difference of ~50 km/s was measured between the areas of high and low surface brightness, which would be expected if NGC588 were an evolved GHIIR. Line ratios used in the BPT diagnostic diagrams show a larger range of variation in the low surface brightness areas. The ranges are ~0.5 to 1.2 dex for [NII]/Ha, 0.7 to 1.7 dex for [SII]/Ha, and 0.3 to 0.5 dex for [OIII]/Hb. Ratios corresponding to large ionization parameter (U) are found between the peak of the emission in Hb and the main ionizing source decreasing radially outwards within the region. Differences between the integrated and local values of the U tracers can be as high as ~0.8 dex. [OII]/Hb and [OIII]/[OII] yield similar local values for U and consistent with those expected from the integrated spectrum of an HII region ionized by a single star. The ratio [SII]/Ha departs significantly from the range predicted by this scenario, indicating the complex ionization structure in GHIIRs. There is a significant scatter in derivations of Z using strong line tracers as a function of position, caused by variations in the degree of ionization. The scatter is smaller for N2O3 which points to this tracer as a better Z tracer than N2. The comparison between integrated and local line ratio values indicates that measurements of the line ratios of GHIIR in galaxies at distances >~25 Mpc may be dominated by the ionization conditions in their low surface brightness areas.
We have carried out a detailed modelling of the dust heating and emission in the nearby, starbursting dwarf galaxy NGC 4214. Due to its proximity and the great wealth of data from the UV to the millimeter range (from GALEX, HST, {it Spitzer}, Hersche l, Planck and IRAM) it is possible to separately model the emission from HII regions and their associated photodissociation regions (PDRs) and the emission from diffuse dust. Furthermore, most model parameters can be directly determined from the data leaving very few free parameters. We can fit both the emission from HII+PDR regions and the diffuse emission in NGC 4214 with these models with normal dust properties and realistic parameters.
