We point out that a high number density of stars in the core of a dense star cluster such as the central stellar cluster at the Galactic center, where many stars possess strong stellar winds, should result in collisions of those winds. The wind collisions in the dense stellar core at the Galactic center would result in production of strong X-ray flares with the rate of $sim 10^{-4}~ (N_w/10^3)^2 / yr$ and duration of $sim 1$ week, where $N_w$ is the number of the wind producing stars in the core. Presence of a massive black hole would enhance the stellar density around it and would make collisions of the winds in the core substantially more frequent. Collisions of the stellar winds in the cluster have also a number of interesting observable implications, including generation of $gamma$-rays by particles accelerated by the shocks from the colliding winds. These processes are also expected to be relevant to compact regions of intense star formation elsewhere.

IRS~13E is an enigmatic compact group of massive stars located in projection only 3.6 arcseconds away from Sgr A*. This group has been suggested to be bounded by an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We present a multi-wavelength study of the group and its interplay with the environment. Based on Chandra observations, we find the X-ray spectrum of IRS~13E can be well characterized by an optically thin thermal plasma. The emission peaks between two strongly mass-losing Wolf-Rayet stars of the group. These properties can be reasonably well reproduced by simulated colliding winds of these two stars. However, this scenario under-predicts the X-ray intensity in outer regions. The residual emission likely results from the ram-pressure confinement of the IRS~13E group wind by the ambient medium and is apparently associated with a shell-like warm gas structure seen in Pa-alpha and in ALMA observations. These latter observations also show strongly peaked thermal emission with unusually large velocity spread between the two stars. These results indicate that the group is colliding with the bar of the dense cool gas mini-spiral around Sgr A*. The extended X-ray morphology of IRS~13E and its association with the bar further suggest that the group is physically much farther away than the projected distance from Sgr A*. The presence of an IMBH, while favorable to keep the stars bound together, is not necessary to explain the observed stellar and gas properties of IRS~13E.
A small cluster of massive stars residing in the Galactic center, collectively known as IRS13E, is of special interest due to its close proximity to Sgr A* and the possibility that an embedded intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) binds its member star s. It has been suggested that colliding winds from two member stars, both classified as Wolf-Rayet type, are responsible for the observed X-ray, infrared and radio emission from IRS13E. We have conducted an in-depth study of the X-ray spatial, temporal and spectral properties of IRS13E, based on 5.6 Ms of ultra-deep Chandra observations obtained over 20 years. These X-ray observations show no significant evidence for source variability. We have also explored the kinematics of the cluster members, using Keck near-infrared imaging and spectroscopic data on a 14-yr baseline that considerably improve the accuracy of stars proper motions. The observations are interpreted using 3-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of colliding winds tailored to match the physical conditions of IRS13E, leading us to conclude that the observed X-ray spectrum and morphology can be well explained by the colliding wind scenario, in the meantime offering no support for the presence of a putative IMBH. An IMBH more massive than a few $10^3{rm~M_odot}$ is also strongly disfavored by the stellar kinematics.

We discuss the stellar content of the Galactic Center, and in particular, recent estimates of the star formation rate (SFR). We discuss pros and cons of the different stellar tracers and focus our attention on the SFR based on the three classical Cep heids recently discovered in the Galactic Center. We also discuss stellar populations in field and cluster stars and present some preliminary results based on near-infrared photometry of a field centered on the young massive cluster Arches. We also provide a new estimate of the true distance modulus to the Galactic Center and we found 14.49$pm$0.02(standard)$pm$0.10(systematic) mag (7.91$pm0.08pm0.40$ kpc). Current estimate agrees quite well with similar photometric and kinematic distance determinations available in the literature. We also discuss the metallicity gradient of the thin disk and the sharp change in the slope when moving across the edge of the inner disk, the Galactic Bar and the Galactic Center. The difference becomes even more compelling if we take into account that metal abundances are based on young stellar tracers (classical Cepheids, Red Supergiants, Luminous Blue Variables). Finally, we briefly outline the possible mechanisms that might account for current empirical evidence.

We investigate the structure and X-ray emission from the colliding stellar winds in massive star binaries. We find that the opening angle of the contact discontinuity (CD) is overestimated by several formulae in the literature at very small values of the wind momentum ratio. We find also that the shocks in the primary (dominant) and secondary winds flare by approx 20 degrees compared to the CD, and that the entire secondary wind is shocked when the wind momentum ratio < 0.02. Analytical expressions for the opening angles of the shocks, and the fraction of each wind that is shocked, are provided. We find that the X-ray luminosity scales with the wind momentum ratio, and that the spectrum softens slightly as the wind momentum ratio decreases.
