The gravitational action of the smooth energy-matter components filling in the universe can affect the orbit of a planetary system. Changes are related to the acceleration of the cosmological scale size R. In a universe with significant dark matter, a gravitational system expands or contracts according to the amount and equation of state of the dark energy. At present time, the Solar system, according to the LambdaCDM scenario emerging from observational cosmology, should be expanding if we consider only the effect of the cosmological background. Its fate is determined by the equation of state of the dark energy alone. The mean motion and periastron precession of a planet are directly sensitive to (d^2 R/d t^2)/R, whereas variations with time in the semi-major axis and eccentricity are related to its time variation. Actual bounds on the cosmological deceleration parameters q_0 from accurate astrometric data of perihelion precession and changes in the third Keplers law in the Solar system fall short of ten orders of magnitude with respect to estimates from observational cosmology. Future radio-ranging measurements of outer planets could improve actual bounds by five orders of magnitude.

We study the tensorial modes of the two-fluid model, where one of this fluids has an equation of state $p = - rho/3$ (variable cosmological constant, cosmic string fluid, texture) or $p = - rho$ (cosmological constant), while the other fluid is an or dinary matter (radiation, stiff matter, incoherent matter). In the first case, it is possible to have a closed Universe whose dynamics can be that of an open Universe providing alternative solutions for the age and horizon problems. This study of the gravitational waves is extended for all values of the effective curvature $k_{eff}=k-frac{8pi G}{3}rho_{0s}$, that is, positive, negative or zero, $k$ being the curvature of the spacelike section. In the second case, we restrict ourselves to a flat spatial section. The behaviour of gravitational waves have, in each case, very particular features, that can be reflected in the anisotropy spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. We make also some considerations of these models as candidate to dark matter models.
We introduce a model which may generate particle number asymmetry in an expanding Universe. The model includes CP violating and particle number violating interactions. The model consists of a real scalar field and a complex scalar field. Starting wit h an initial condition specified by a density matrix, we show how the asymmetry is created through the interaction and how it evolves at later time. We compute the asymmetry using non-equilibrium quantum field theory and as a first test of the model, we study how the asymmetry evolves in the flat limit.

The Hubble law, determined from the distance modulii and redshifts of galaxies, for the past 80 years, has been used as strong evidence for an expanding universe. This claim is reviewed in light of the claimed lack of necessary evidence for time dila tion in quasar and gamma-ray burst luminosity variations and other lines of evidence. It is concluded that the observations could be used to describe either a static universe (where the Hubble law results from some as-yet-unknown mechanism) or an expanding universe described by the standard Lambda cold dark matter model. In the latter case, size evolution of galaxies is necessary for agreement with observations. Yet the simple non-expanding Euclidean universe fits most data with the least number of assumptions. From this review it is apparent that there are still many unanswered questions in cosmology and the title question of this paper is still far from being answered.

We extend our analysis for scalar fields in a Robertson-Walker metric to the electromagnetic field and Dirac fields by the method of invariants. The issue of the relation between conformal properties and particle production is re-examined and it is v erified that the electromagnetic and massless spinor actions are conformal invariant, while the massless conformally coupled scalar field is not. For the scalar field case it is pointed out that the violation of conformal simmetry due to surface terms, although ininfluential for the equation of motion, does lead to effects in the quantized theory.

The interpretation of the expanding universe as an expansion of space has recently been challenged. From the geodesic equation in Friedmann universe models and the empty Milne model, we argue that a Newtonian or special relativistic analysis is not a pplicable on large scales, and the general relativistic interpretation in terms of expanding space has the advantage of being globally consistent. We also show that the cosmic redshift, interpreted as an expansion effect, containts both the Doppler effect and the gravitational frequency shift.
