We study the narrow-line region (NLR) of six Seyfert-1 and six Seyfert-2 galaxies by means of spatially resolved optical spectroscopy and photoionization modelling. From spatially resolved spectral diagnostics, we find a transition between the AGN-excited NLR and the surrounding star-forming regions, allowing us to determine the NLR size independent of stellar contamination. CLOUDY photoionization models show that the observed transition represents a true difference in ionization source and cannot be explained by variations of physical parameters. The electron density and ionization parameter decrease with radius indicating that the NLR is photoionized by the central source only. The velocity field suggests a disky NLR gas distribution.

This work studies the optical emission line properties and physical conditions of the narrow line region (NLR) of seven narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1). Our results show that the flux carried out by the narrow component of H-beta is, on average , 50% of the total line flux. As a result, the [OIII] 5007/H-beta ratio emitted in the NLR varies from 1 to 5, instead of the universally adopted value of 10. This has strong implications for the required spectral energy distribution that ionizes the NLR gas. Photoionization models that consider a NLR composed of a combination of matter-bounded and ionization-bounded clouds are successful at explaining the low [OIII] 5007/H-beta ratio and the weakness of low-ionization lines of NLS1s. Variation of the relative proportion of these two type of clouds nicely reproduce the dispersion of narrow line ratios found among the NLS1 sample. Assuming similar physical model parameters of both NLS1s and the normal Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, we show that the observed differences of emission line ratios between these two groups can be explained in terms of the shape of the input ionizing continuum. Narrow emission line ratios of NLS1s are better reproduced by a steep power-law continuum in the EUV -- soft X-ray region, with spectral index alpha ~ -2. Flatter spectral indices (alpha ~ -1.5) match the observed line ratios of NGC 5548 but are unable to provide a good match to the NLS1 ratios. This result is consistent with ROSAT observations of NLS1s, which show that these objects are characterized by steeper power-law indices than those of Sy1 galaxies with strong broad optical lines.

We present our recent results about the extended narrow-line region (ENLR) of two nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies (IC 5063 and NGC 7212) obtained by modelling the observed line profiles and spectra with composite models (photoionization+shocks) in the diff erent regions surrounding the AGN. Then, we compare the Seyfert 2 ENLRs with the very extended one recently discovered in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Mrk 783. We have found several evidences of interaction between the ISM of the galaxies and their radio jets, such as a) the contribution of shocks in ionizing the high velocity gas, b) the complex kinematics showed by the profile of the emission lines, c) the high fragmentation of matter, etc. The results suggest that the ENLR of IC 5063 have a hollow bi-conical shape, with one edge aligned to the galaxy disk, which may cause some kind of dependence on velocity of the ionization parameter. Regarding the Mrk 783 properties, it is found that the extension of the optical emission is almost twice the size of the radio one and it seems due to the AGN activity, although there is contamination by star formation around 12 arcsec from the nucleus. Diagnostic diagrams excluded the contribution of star formation in IC 5063 and NGC 7212, while the shock contribution was used to explain the spectra emitted by their high velocity gas.
Narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies constitute a class of active galactic nuclei characterized by the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the H$beta$ broad emission line < 2000 km/s and the flux ratio of [O III] to H$beta$ < 3. Their properties a re not well understood since only a few NLSy1 galaxies were known earlier. We have studied various properties of NLSy1 galaxies using an enlarged sample and compared them with the conventional broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLSy1) galaxies. Both the sample of sources have z $le$ 0.8 and their optical spectra from SDSS-DR12 that are used to derive various physical parameters have a median signal to noise (S/N) ratio >10 per pixel. Strong correlations between the H$beta$ and H$alpha$ emission lines are found both in the FWHM and flux. The nuclear continuum luminosity is found to be strongly correlated with the luminosity of H$beta$, H$alpha$ and [O III] emission lines. The black hole mass in NLSy1 galaxies is lower compared to their broad line counterparts. Compared to BLSy1 galaxies, NLSy1 galaxies have a stronger FeII emission and a higher Eddington ratio that place them in the extreme upper right corner of the $R_{4570}$ - $xi_{Edd}$ diagram. The distribution of the radio-loudness parameter (R) in NLSy1 galaxies drops rapidly at R > 10 compared to the BLSy1 galaxies that have powerful radio jets. The soft X-ray photon index in NLSy1 galaxies is on average higher (2.9 $pm$ 0.9) than BLSy1 galaxies (2.4 $pm$ 0.8). It is anti-correlated with the H$beta$ width but correlated with the Fe II strength. NLSy1 galaxies on average have a lower amplitude of optical variability compared to their broad lines counterparts. These results suggest Eddington ratio as the main parameter that drives optical variability in these sources.
We present a study of reddening and absorption towards the Narrow Line Regions (NLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the Revised Shapley-Ames, 12mu, and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope samples. For the sources in host galaxies with inclinat ions of b/a > 0.5, we find that mean ratio of [O III] 5007A, from ground-based observations, and [O IV] 28.59mu, from Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph observations, is a factor of 2 lower in Seyfert 2s than Seyfert 1s. The combination of low [O III]/[O IV] and [O III] 4363/5007 ratios in Seyfert 2s suggests more extinction of emission from the NLR than in Seyfert 1s. Similar column densities of dusty gas, NH ~ several X 10^21 cm^-2, can account for the suppression of both [O III] 5007A and [O III] 4363A, as compared to those observed in Seyfert 1s. Also, we find that the X-ray line OVII 22.1A is weaker in Seyfert 2s, consistent with absorption by the same gas that reddens the optical emission. Using a Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph slitless spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, we estimate that only ~ 30% of the [O III] 5007A comes from within 30 pc of the central source, which is insufficient to account for the low [O III]/[OIV] ratios in Seyfert 2s. If Seyfert 2 galaxies have similar intrinsic [OIII] spatial profiles, the external dusty gas must extend further out along the NLR, perhaps in the form of nuclear dust spirals that have been associated with fueling flows towards the AGN.
Spatially resolved emission-line spectroscopy is a powerful tool to determine the physical conditions in the narrow-line region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We recently used optical long-slit spectroscopy to study the NLRs of a sample of s ix Seyfert-2 galaxies. We have shown that such an approach, in comparison to the commonly used [OIII] narrow-band imaging alone, allows us to probe the size of the NLR in terms of AGN photoionisation. Moreover, several physical parameters of the NLR can be directly accessed. We here apply the same methods to study the NLR of six Seyfert-1 galaxies and compare our results to those of Seyfert-2 galaxies. We employ diagnostically valuable emission-line ratios to determine the physical properties of the NLR, including the core values and radial dependencies of density, ionisation parameter, and reddening. Tracking the radial change of emission-line ratios in diagnostic diagrams allows us to measure the transition between AGN-like and HII-like line excitation, and thus we are able to measure the size of the NLR. In the diagnostic diagrams, we find a transition between line ratios falling in the AGN regime and those typical for HII regions in two Seyfert-1 galaxies, thus determining the size of the NLR. The central electron temperature and ionisation parameter are in general higher in type-1 Seyferts than in type 2s. In almost all cases, both electron density and ionisation parameter decrease with radius. In general, the decrease is faster in Seyfert-1 galaxies than in type 2s. In several objects, the gaseous velocity distribution is characteristic for rotational motion in an (inclined) emission-line disk in the centre. We give estimates of the black hole masses. We discuss our findings in detail for each object.
