We have studied ~2100 early-type galaxies in the SDSS DR3 which have been detected by the GALEX Medium Imaging Survey (MIS), in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.11. Combining GALEX UV photometry with corollary optical data from the SDSS, we find that, at a 95 percent confidence level, at least ~30 percent of galaxies in this sample have UV to optical colours consistent with some recent star formation within the last Gyr. In particular, galaxies with a NUV - r colour less than 5.5 are very likely to have experienced such recent star formation, taking into account the possibility of a contribution to NUV flux from the UV upturn phenomenon. We find quantitative agreement between the observations and the predictions of a semi-analytical LCDM hierarchical merger model and deduce that early-type galaxies in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.11 have ~1 to 3 percent of their stellar mass in stars less than 1 Gyr old. The average age of this recently formed population is ~300 to 500 Myrs. We also find that monolithically evolving galaxies, where recent star formation can be driven solely by recycled gas from stellar mass loss, cannot exhibit the blue colours (NUV - r < 5.5) seen in a significant fraction (~30 percent) of our observed sample.

The origin of S0 galaxies is discussed in the framework of early mergers in a Cold Dark Matter cosmology, and in a scenario where S0s are assumed to be former spirals stripped of gas. From an analysis of 127 early-type disk galaxies (S0-Sa), we find a clear correlation between the scale parameters of the bulge (r_eff) and the disk (h_R), a correlation which is difficult to explain if these galaxies were formed in mergers of disk galaxies. However, the stripping hypothesis, including quiescent star formation, is not sufficient to explain the origin of S0s either, because it is not compatible with our finding that S0s have a significantly smaller fraction of bars (46$pm$6 %) than their assumed progenitors, S0/a galaxies (93$pm$5 %) or spirals (64-69 %). Our conclusion is that even if a large majority of S0s were descendants of spiral galaxies, bars and ovals must play an important role in their evolution. The smaller fraction particularly of strong bars in S0 galaxies is compensated by a larger fraction of ovals/lenses (97$pm$2 % compared to 82-83 % in spirals), many of which might be weakened bars. We also found massive disk-like bulges in nine of the S0 galaxies, bulges which might have formed at an early gas-rich stage of galaxy evolution.

We present the results of our analysis of the photometric data of globular clusters in the elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Cen A). We show that the integrated colour U-B can be an effective metallicity indicator for simple stellar populations. This is be cause it is sensitive to metallicity via the opacity effect but relatively insensitive to the effective main sequence turn-off temperature of the population (and thus to age) when Teff ~ 7000-12000K, that is, when the Balmer Jump is strong. This flat U-B vs Teff relation is a result of the fact that the blueing effect of the optical continuum with increasing temperature is temporarily stopped by the Balmer Jump which becomes greater with temperature in this range. In this study we use U-B and B-V as metallicity and age indicators, respectively. We first show that the use of the U-B vs B-V two-colour diagram roughly yields the metallicities and ages of the Milky Way globular clusters independently determined, and then apply the technique to the clusters in NGC 5128. There is a large range in U-B, which corresponds to [Fe/H] of -2.0 through over +0.3. The large uncertainties from the data and the models currently prevent us from pinning down their ages and metallicities. Although a constant age for all these clusters cannot be ruled out, there is a hint of the metal-rich clusters being younger. Significance of these results and caveats of the analysis are discussed.

(abridged) We introduce and discuss the properties of a theoretical (B-K)-(J-K) integrated colour diagram for single-age, single-metallicity stellar populations. This combination of integrated colours is able to largely disentangle the well known age -metallicity degeneracy when the age of the population is greater than ~300 Myr. We discuss in detail the effect on this colour-colour diagram of alpha-enhanced metal abundance ratios, the presence of blue horizontal branch stars unaccounted for in the theoretical calibration, and of statistical colour fluctuations in low mass stellar systems. In the case of populations with multiple stellar generations, the luminosity-weighted mean age obtained from this diagram is shown to be heavily biased towards the youngest stellar components. We apply this method to several datasets for which optical and near-IR photometry are available in the literature. For the two Local Group dwarf galaxies NGC185 and NGC6822, the mean ages derived from the integrated colours are consistent with the star formation histories inferred independently from photometric observations of their resolved stellar populations. A sample of bright field and Virgo cluster elliptical galaxies is found to exhibit a range of luminosity-weighted mean ages from 3 to 14 Gyr, with a mean of 8 Gyr, independent of environment, and mean metallicities at or just above the solar value. Colour gradients are found in all of the galaxies studied, in the sense that central regions are redder. Aperture data for five Virgo early-type dwarf galaxies show that these galaxies appear to be shifted to lower mean metallicities and lower mean ages (range 1 to 6 Gyr) than their higher luminosity counterparts.

We performed K band surface photometry for luminous early-type galaxies in a nearby rich cluster ABELL 2199. Combining it with B and R band surface photometry, radial variations of B-R and R-K colours in the galaxies were investigated. It is found th at the inner regions of the galaxies are redder in both of B-R and R-K colours. Comparing the radial variations of both of the colours with predictions of Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models for a range of ages and metallicities, it is suggested that the cluster ellipticals have negative metallicity gradients but their age gradients are consistent with zero, although our sample is small; the typical metallicity gradient is estimated to be -0.16+- 0.09 in dlogZ/dlogr, while the age gradient is estimated to be -0.10 +- 0.14 in dlog(age)/dlogr. Considering that similar results have also been derived in the other recent studies using samples of ellipticals in the Coma cluster and less dense environments, it seems that there is no strong dependence on galaxy environment in radial gradient of stellar population in elliptical galaxy.

GALEX detected a significant fraction of early-type galaxies showing Far-UV bright structures. These features suggest the occurrence of recent star formation episodes. We aim at understanding their evolutionary path[s] and the mechanisms at the origi n of their UV-bright structures. We investigate with a multi-lambda approach 11 early-types selected because of their nearly passive stage of evolution in the nuclear region. The paper, second of a series, focuses on the comparison between UV features detected by Swift-UVOT, tracing recent star formation, and the galaxy optical structure mapping older stellar populations. We performed their UV surface photometry and used BVRI photometry from other sources. Our integrated magnitudes have been analyzed and compared with corresponding values in the literature. We characterize the overall galaxy structure best fitting the UV and optical luminosity profiles using a single Sersic law. NGC 1366, NGC 1426, NGC 3818, NGC 3962 and NGC 7192 show featureless luminosity profiles. Excluding NGC 1366 which has a clear edge-on disk , n~1-2, and NGC 3818, the remaining three have Sersics indices n~3-4 in optical and a lower index in the UV. Bright ring/arm-like structures are revealed by UV images and luminosity profiles of NGC 1415, NGC 1533, NGC 1543, NGC 2685, NGC 2974 and IC 2006. The ring/arm-like structures are different from galaxy to galaxy. Sersic indices of UV profiles for those galaxies are in the range n=1.5-3 both in S0s and in Es. In our sample optical Sersic indices are usually larger than the UV ones. (M2-V) color profiles are bluer in ring/arm-like structures with respect to the galaxy body. The lower values of Sersics indices in the UV bands with respect to optical ones, suggesting the presence of a disk, point out that the role of the dissipation cannot be neglected in recent evolutionary phases of these early-type galaxies.
