We present preliminary results of an extensive study of the fundamental properties of dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) in the Coma cluster. Our study will combine HST surface photometry with ground-based UBRIJK photometry and optical spectroscopy. The combined data set will be used to investigate the intrinsic correlations among global parameters in cluster dEs, including the Fundamental Plane, the color-magnitude relation, the Faber-Jackson and Kormendy relation, and velocity dispersion versus line strength indices. These empirical correlations have provided important constraints to theoretical models of galaxy formation and evolution for normal elliptical galaxies. Although dEs are the most abundant galaxy population in clusters their properties remain, however, largely unknown. Our study aims to provide an essential reference for testing current theories on the formation and evolution of dEs in clusters, and understanding their relation to more massive elliptical galaxies.

(ABRIDGED) We examine the fundamental scaling relations of elliptical galaxies formed through mergers. Using hundreds of simulations to judge the impact of progenitor galaxy properties on merger remnants, we find that gas dissipation provides an impo rtant contribution to tilt in the Fundamental Plane relation. Dissipationless mergers of disks produce remnants that occupy the virial plane. As the gas content of disk galaxies is increased, the tilt of the Fundamental Plane relation increases and the slope of the Re-M_* relation steepens. For gas fractions fgas > 30%, the simulated Fundamental Plane scalings approach those observed in the K-band. In our simulations, feedback from supermassive black hole growth has only a minor influence on the stellar-mass scaling relations of spheroidal galaxies, but may play a role in maintaining the observed Fundamental Plane tilt at optical wavelengths by suppressing residual star formation in merger remnants. We estimate that approx 40-100% of the Fundamental Plane tilt induced by structural properties owes to trends in the central total-to-stellar mass ratio M_total/M_* produced by dissipation. Lower mass systems obtain greater phase- space densities than higher mass systems, producing a galaxy mass-dependent central M_total/M_* and a corresponding tilt in the Fundamental Plane.

We present UBVRI surface photometry for 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with previously measured kinematic properties. The global optical colors are red, with median values for the sample of 0.24 +/- 0.03 in (U-B), 0.77 +/- 0.02 in (B-V), and 1.02 +/- 0.03 in (V-I). We recover the well known color-magnitude relation for cluster galaxies, but find no significant difference in dominant stellar population between rotating and non-rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies; the average age of the dominant stellar population is 5-7 Gyr in all 16 galaxies in this sample. Analysis of optical spectra confirm these age estimates and indicate Fe and Mg abundances in the range of 1/20th to 1/3 of solar, as expected for low luminosity galaxies. Based on Lick indices and simple stellar population models, the derived [alpha/Fe] ratios are sub-solar to solar, indicating a more gradual chemical enrichment history for dEs as compared to giant elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. These observations confirm the marked difference in stellar population and stellar distribution between dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies and further substantiate the need for alternative evolutionary scenarios for the lowest mass cluster galaxies. We argue that it is likely that several different physical mechanisms played a significant role in the production of the Virgo cluster dE galaxies including in situ formation, infall of dEs that were once part of Local Group analogs, and transformation of dwarf irregular galaxies by the cluster environment. The observations support the hypothesis that a large fraction of the Virgo cluster dEs are formed by ram pressure stripping of gas from infalling dIs.

We present a study focusing on the nature of compact groups through the study of their elliptical galaxies. We determine velocity dispersions ($sigma$) for 18 18 bright elliptical galaxies located in the core of Hickson compact groups and a control s ample of 12 bright bona fide ellipticals located in the field or very loose groups. Several tests are carried out to avoid sources of systematic effects in $sigma$ measurements. We use these velocity dispersions to compare the position of 11 compact group galaxies in the Fundamental Plane to that of a large and homogeneous sample of elliptical galaxies (Burstein et al. 1987). We find that little or no significant difference exists, as far as the Fundamental Plane is concerned, between ellipticals in compact groups and their counterparts in other environments.

Globular clusters (GC) are important objects for tracing the early evolution of a galaxy. We study the relation between the properties of globular cluster systems - as quantified by the GC specific frequency (SN) - and the properties of their host ga laxies. In order to understand the origin of the relation between the GC specific frequency (SN) and galaxy mass, we devise a theoretical model for the specific frequency (SN,th). GC erosion is considered to be an important aspect for shaping this relation, since observations show that galaxies with low densities have a higher SN, while high density galaxies have a small SN. We construct a model based on the hypothesis that star-formation is clustered and depends on the minimum embedded star cluster mass (Mecl, min), the slope of the power-law embedded cluster mass function (beta) and the relation between the star formation rate (SFR) and the maximum star cluster mass (Mecl, max). We find an agreement between the primordial value of the specific frequency (SNi) and our model for beta between 1.5 and 2.5 with Mecl, min <10^4 Msun.
We determine abundance ratios of 37 dwarf ellipticals (dEs) in the nearby Virgo cluster. This sample is representative of the early-type population of galaxies in the absolute magnitude range -19.0 < Mr < -16.0. We analyze their absorption line-stren gth indices by means of index-index diagrams and scaling relations and use the stellar population models to interpret them. We present ages, metallicities and abundance ratios obtained from these dEs within an aperture size of Re/8. We calculate [Na/Fe] from NaD, [Ca/Fe] from Ca4227 and [Mg/Fe] from Mgb. We find that [Na/Fe] is under-abundant with respect to solar while [Mg/Fe] is around solar. This is exactly opposite to what is found for giant ellipticals, but follows the trend with metallicity found previously for the Fornax dwarf NGC 1396. We discuss possible formation scenarios that can result in such elemental abundance patterns and we speculate that dEs have disk-like SFH favouring them to originate from late-type dwarfs or small spirals. Na-yields appear to be very metal-dependent, in agreement with studies of giant ellipticals, probably due to the large dependence on the neutron-excess in stars. We conclude that dEs have undergone a considerable amount of chemical evolution, they are therefore not uniformly old, but have extended SFH, similar to many of the Local Group galaxies.
