We define a new complete sample of 13 optically-luminous radio quasars M_AB(1450 Angstrom) < -26.9 mag and log P_1.4 GHz(W/Hz) > 25.7 with redshift 3.8 < z < 4.5, obtained by cross-correlating the FIRST radio survey and the APM catalogue of POSS-I. We measure the space density to be 1.0 +/- 0.3 /Gpc^3, a factor 1.9 +/- 0.7 smaller than the space density of similar quasars at z=2. Using a new measurement of the radio-loud fraction of quasars we find that at z=4 the total space density of quasars with M_AB(1450 Angstrom) < -26.9 is 7.4 +/- 2.6/Gpc^3. This is a factor 1.8 +/- 0.8 less than the space density at z=2, found by the 2dF quasar survey. This (z=2)/(z=4) ratio, consistent with that of the radio-loud quasars, is significantly different from the ratio of about 10 found for samples including lower-luminosity quasars. This suggests that the decline of the space density beyond z=2 is slower for optically-luminous quasars than for less-luminous ones.

We present high signal-to-noise, 5 A resolution (FWHM) spectra of 66 z ga 4 bright quasars obtained with the 4 m Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory and 4.2 m William Hershel telescopes. The primary goal of these observations was to undertake a n ew survey for intervening absorption systems detected in the spectra of background quasars. We look for both Lyman-limit systems (column densities N(HI) > 1.6 * 10^{17} atoms cm-2) and damped Ly-alpha systems (column densities N(HI) > 2 * 10^{20} atoms cm-2). This work resulted in the discovery of 49 Lyman-limit systems, 15 of which are within 3000 km s-1 of the quasar emission and thus might be associated with the quasar itself, 26 new damped Ly-alpha absorption candidates, 15 of which have z>3.5 and numerous metal absorption systems. In addition ten of the quasars presented here exhibit intrinsic broad absorption lines.
The study of the space density of bright AGNs at $z>4$ has been subject to extensive effort given its importance for the estimate of the cosmological ionizing emissivity and growth of supermassive black holes. In this context we have recently derived high space densities of AGNs at $zsim 4$ and $-25<M_{1450}<-23$ in the COSMOS field from a spectroscopically complete sample. In the present paper we attempt to extend the knowledge of the AGN space density at fainter magnitudes ($-22.5<M_{1450}<-18.5$) in the $4<z<6.1$ redshift interval by means of a multiwavelength sample of galaxies in the CANDELS GOODS-South, GOODS-North and EGS fields. We use an updated criterion to extract faint AGNs from a population of NIR (rest-frame UV) selected galaxies at photometric $z>4$ showing X-ray detection in deep Chandra images available for the three CANDELS fields. We have collected a photometric sample of 32 AGN candidates in the selected redshift interval, six of which having spectroscopic redshifts. Including our COSMOS sample as well as other bright QSO samples allows a first guess on the shape of the UV luminosity function at $zsim 4.5$. The resulting emissivity and photoionization rate appear consistent with that derived from the photoionization level of the intergalactic medium at $zsim 4.5$. An extrapolation to $zsim 5.6$ suggests an important AGN contribution to the IGM ionization if there are no significant changes in the shape of the UV luminosity function.
We use Keck/HIRES spectra of 37 optically bright quasars at z=2-4 to study narrow absorption lines that are intrinsic to the quasars (intrinsic NALs, produced in gas that is physically associated with the quasar central engine). We identify 150 NAL s ystems, that contain 124 C IV, 12 N V, and 50 Si IV doublets, of which 18 are associated systems (within 5,000 km/s of the quasar redshift). We use partial coverage analysis to separate intrinsic NALs from NALs produced in cosmologically intervening structures. We find 39 candidate intrinsic systems, (28 reliable determinations and 11 that are possibly intrinsic). We estimate that 10-17% of C IV systems at blueshifts of 5,000-70,000 km/s relative to quasars are intrinsic. At least 32% of quasars contain one or more intrinsic C IV NALs. Considering N V and Si IV doublets showing partial coverage as well, at least 50% of quasars host intrinsic NALs. This result constrains the solid angle subtended by the absorbers to the background source(s). We identify two families of intrinsic NAL systems, those with strong N V absorption, and those with negligible absorption in N V, but with partial coverage in the C IV doublet. We discuss the idea that these two families represent different regions or conditions in accretion disk winds. Of the 26 intrinsic C IV NAL systems, 13 have detectable low-ionization absorption lines at similar velocities, suggesting that these are two-phase structures in the wind rather than absorbers in the host galaxy. We also compare possible models for quasar outflows, including radiatively accelerated disk-driven winds, magnetocentrifugally accelerated winds, and pressure-driven winds, and we discuss ways of distinguishing between these models observationally.

We have used the IRAM Plateau de Bure mm interferometer and the UKIRT 1-5 um Imager Spectrometer to test the connection between the major phases of spheroid growth and nuclear accretion by mapping CO emission in nine submm-detected QSOs at z=1.7-2.6 with black hole (BH) masses derived from near-infrared spectroscopy. With a previously published QSO, we present sensitive CO(3-2) observations of 10 submm-detected QSOs selected at the epoch of peak activity in both QSOs and submm galaxies (SMGs). CO is detected in 5/6 very optically luminous (M_B~-28) submm-detected QSOs with BH masses M_BH~10^9-10^10 Msun, confirming the presence of large gas reservoirs of M_gas~3.4x10^10 Msun. However, we find that their BH masses are ~30 times too large and their surface density is ~300 times too small to be related to typical SMGs in an evolutionary sequence. Conversely, we measure weaker CO emission in four fainter (M_B~-25) submm-detected QSOs with properties, BH masses (M_BH~5x10^8 Msun), and surface densities similar to SMGs. These QSOs appear to lie near the local M_BH/M_sph relation, making them plausible `transition objects in the proposed evolutionary sequence linking QSOs to the formation of massive young galaxies and BHs at high-redshift. We show that SMGs have a higher incidence of bimodal CO line profiles than seen in our QSO sample, which we interpret as an effect of their relative inclinations, with the QSOs seen more face-on. Finally, we find that the gas masses of the four fainter submm-detected QSOs imply that their star formation episodes could be sustained for ~10 Myr, and are consistent with representing a phase in the formation of massive galaxies which overlaps a preceding SMG starburst phase, before subsequently evolving into a population of present-day massive ellipticals.
