We present results from a new and unique integral-field spectrograph, SAURON. It has a large field of view and high throughput and is primarily built for the study of stellar & gaseous kinematics and stellar populations in galaxies. Its aim is to carry out a systematic survey of the velocity fields, velocity dispersions, and line-strength distributions of nearby ellipticals, lenticular galaxies and spiral bulges. Its wide field is especially useful for the study of complicated velocity structures. Together with other spectroscopic data, images, and dynamical modelling, SAURON will help to constrain the intrinsic shapes, mass-to-light ratios, and stellar populations of early-type galaxies and spiral bulges.

We present selected results from integral-field spectroscopy of 48 early-type galaxies observed as part of the SAURON survey. Maps of the Hbeta, Fe5015, Mgb and Fe5270 indices in the Lick/IDS system were derived for each of the survey galaxies. The m etal line strength maps show generally negative gradients with increasing radius roughly consistent with the morphology of the light profiles. Remarkable deviations from this general trend exist, particularly the Mgb isoindex contours appear to be flatter than the isophotes of the surface brightness for about 40% of our galaxies without significant dust features. Generally these galaxies exhibit significant rotation. We infer from this that the fast-rotating component features a higher metallicity and/or an increased Mg/Fe ratio as compared to the galaxy as a whole. We also use the line strengths maps to compute average values integrated over circular apertures of one effective radius, and derive luminosity weighted ages and metallicities. The lenticular galaxies show a wide range in age and metallicity estimates, while elliptical galaxies tend to occupy regions of older stellar populations.

An atlas of Ks-band images of 206 early-type galaxies is presented, including 160 S0-S0/a galaxies, 12 ellipticals, and 33 Sa galaxies. A majority of the Atlas galaxies belong to a magnitude-limited (mB<12.5 mag) sample of 185 NIRS0S (Near-IR S0 gala xy Survey) galaxies. To assure that mis-classified S0s are not omitted, 25 ellipticals from RC3 classified as S0s in the Carnegie Atlas were included in the sample. The images are 2-3 mag deeper than 2MASS images. Both visual and photometric classifications are made. Special attention is paid to the classification of lenses, coded in a systematic manner. A new lens-type, called a barlens, is introduced. Also, boxy/peanut/x-shaped structures are identified in many barred galaxies, even-though the galaxies are not seen in edge-on view, indicating that vertical thickening is not enough to explain them. Multiple lenses appear in 25% of the Atlas galaxies, which is a challenge to the hierarchical evolutionary picture of galaxies. Such models need to explain how the lenses were formed and survived in multiple merger events that galaxies may have suffered during their lifetimes. Following the early suggestion by van den Bergh, candidates of S0c galaxies are shown, which galaxies are expected to be former Sc-type spirals stripped out of gas.

We discuss infrared Spitzer observations of early type galaxies in the SAURON sample at 24, 60 and 170 microns. When compared with 2MASS Ks band luminosities, lenticular (S0) galaxies exhibit a much wider range of mid to far-infrared luminosities the n elliptical (E) galaxies. Mid and far-infrared emission from E galaxies is a combination of circumstellar or interstellar emission from local mass-losing red giant stars, dust buoyantly transported from the galactic cores into distant hot interstellar gas and dust accreted from the environment. The source of mid and far-IR emission in S0 galaxies is quite different and is consistent with low levels of star formation, 0.02 - 0.2 Msol/yr, in cold, dusty gaseous disks. The infrared 24micron-70micron color is systematically lower for (mostly S0) galaxies with known molecular disks. Our observations support the conjecture that cold dusty gas in some S0 galaxies is created by stellar mass loss at approximately the same rate that it is consumed by star formation, so the mass depletion of these disks by star formation will be slow. Unlike E galaxies, the infrared luminosities of S0 galaxies correlate with both the mass of molecular gas and the stellar Hbeta spectral index, and all are related to the recent star formation rate. However, star formation rates estimated from the Hbeta emission line luminosities L_{Hbeta} in SAURON S0 galaxies are generally much smaller. Since L_{Hbeta} does not correlate with 24 microns emission from dust heated by young stars, optical emission lines appear to be a poor indicator of star formation rates in SAURON S0 galaxies. The absence of Hbeta emission may be due to a relative absence of OB stars in the initial mass function or to dust absorption of Hbeta emission lines.
We present results from our ongoing effort to understand the nature and evolution of nearby galaxies using the SAURON integral-field spectrograph. In this proceeding we focus on the study of the particular case formed by the interacting galaxies NGC5 953 and NGC5954. We present stellar and gas kinematics of the central regions of NGC5953. We use a simple procedure to determine the age of the stellar populations in the central regions and argue that we may be witnessing the formation of a kinematically decoupled component from cold gas being acquired during the ongoing interaction with NGC5954.
We present SAURON integral-field observations of the S0 galaxy NGC7332. Existing broad-band ground-based and HST photometry reveals a double disk structure and a boxy bulge interpreted as a bar viewed close to edge-on. The SAURON two-dimensional stel lar kinematic maps confirm the existence of the bar and inner disk but also uncover the presence of a cold counter-rotating stellar component within the central 250 pc. The Hbeta and [OIII] emission line maps show that the ionised gas has a complex morphology and kinematics, including both a component counter-rotating with respect to the stars and a fainter co-rotating one. Analysis of the absorption line-strength maps show that NGC7332 is young everywhere. The presence of a large-scale bar can explain most of those properties, but the fact that we see a significant amount of unsettled gas, together with a few peculiar features in the maps, suggest that NGC7332 is still evolving. Interactions as well as bar-driven processes must thus have played an important role in the formation and evolution of NGC7332, and presumably of S0 galaxies in general.
