In this article we present the case of HD 41004 AB, a system composed of a K0V star and a 3.7-magnitude fainter M-dwarf companion separated by only 0.5 arcsec. An analysis of CORALIE radial-velocity measurements has revealed a variation with an amplitude of about 50m/s and a periodicity of 1.3days. This radial-velocity signal is consistent with the expected variation induced by the presence a very low mass giant planetary companion to HD 41004 A, whose light dominates the spectra. The radial-velocity measurements were then complemented with a photometric campaign and with the analysis of the bisector of the CORALIE Cross-Correlation Function (CCF). While the former revealed no significant variations within the observational precision of 0.003-0.004 mag (except for an observed flare event), the bisector analysis showed that the line profiles are varying in phase with the radial-velocity. This latter result, complemented with a series of simulations, has shown that we can explain the observations by considering that HD 41004 B has a brown-dwarf companion orbiting with the observed 1.3-day period. If confirmed, this detection represents the first discovery of a brown dwarf in a very short period (1.3-day) orbit around an M dwarf. Finally, this case should be taken as a serious warning about the importance of analyzing the bisector when looking for planets using radial-velocity techniques.

This paper summarizes the information gathered for 16 still unpublished exoplanet candidates discovered with the CORALIE echelle spectrograph mounted on the Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla Observatory. Amongst these new candidates, 10 are typical e xtrasolar Jupiter-like planets on intermediate- or long-period (100<P<1350d) and fairly eccentric (0.2<e<0.5) orbits (HD19994, HD65216, HD92788, HD111232, HD114386, HD142415, HD147513, HD196050, HD216437, HD216770). Two of these stars are in binary systems. The next 3 candidates are shorter-period planets (HD6434, HD121504) with lower eccentricities among which a hot Jupiter (HD83443). More interesting cases are finally given by the multiple-planet systems HD82943 and HD169830. The former is a resonant P_2/P_1=2/1 system in which planet-planet interactions are influencing the system evolution. The latter is more hierarchically structured.

The presence of a planet around the K dwarf HD192263 was recently called into question by the detection of a periodic photometric signal with the same period as the one observed in radial velocity. In this paper, we investigate this possibility, usin g a combination of radial-velocity, photometry, and bisector measurements obtained simultaneously. The results show that while the observed radial-velocity variation is always very stable in phase, period, and amplitude, the photometric signal changes with time. The combined information strongly suggests that the observed radial-velocity variation is being produced by the presence of a planet, as firstly proposed. The photometric variations are either not connected to the planetary companion, or can eventually be induced by the interaction between the planet and the star. Finally, the radial-velocity data further show the presence of a long term trend, whose origin, still not clear, might be related to the presence of another companion to the system.
Since 1998, a planet-search program around main sequence stars within 50 pc in the southern hemisphere, is carried out with the CORALIE echelle spectrograph at La Silla Observatory. With an observing time span of more than 14 years, the CORALIE surve y is now able to unveil Jovian planets on Jupiters period domain. This growing period-interval coverage is important regarding to formation and migration models since observational constraints are still weak for periods beyond the ice line. Long-term precise Doppler measurements with the CORALIE echelle spectrograph, together with a few additional observations made with the HARPS spectrograph on the ESO 3.6m telescope, reveal radial velocity signatures of massive planetary companions in long period orbits. In this paper we present seven new planets orbiting HD27631, HD98649, HD106515A, HD166724, HD196067, HD219077, and HD220689 together with the CORALIE orbital parameters for three already known planets around HD10647, HD30562, and HD86226. The period range of the new planetary companions goes from 2200 to 5500 days and covers a mass domain between 1 and 10.5 MJup. Surprisingly, five of them present quite high eccentricities above e>0.57. A pumping scenario by Kozai mechanism may be invoked for HD106515Ab and HD196067b which are both orbiting stars in multiple systems. As the presence of a third massive body cant be inferred from the data of HD98649b, HD166724b, and HD219077b, the origin of the eccentricity of these systems remains unknown. Except for HD10647b, no constraint on the upper mass of the planets is provided by Hipparcos astrometric data. Finally it is interesting to note that the hosts of these long period planets show no metallicity excess.
We present radial-velocity measurements obtained with the ELODIE and AFOE spectrographs for GJ 777 A (HD 190360), a metal-rich ([Fe/H]=0.25) nearby (d=15.9 pc) star in a stellar binary system. A long-period low radial-velocity amplitude variation is detected revealing the presence of a Jovian planetary companion. Some of the orbital elements remain weakly constrained because of the smallness of the signal compared to our instrumental precision. The detailed orbital shape is therefore not well established. We present our best fitted orbital solution: an eccentric (e=0.48) 10.7--year orbit. The minimum mass of the companion is 1.33 M_Jup.

(Abridged) Searching for planets around stars with different masses probes the outcome of planetary formation for different initial conditions. This drives observations of a sample of 102 southern nearby M dwarfs, using a fraction of our guaranteed t ime on the ESO/HARPS spectrograph (Feb. 11th, 2003 to Apr. 1st 2009). This paper makes available the samples time series, presents their precision and variability. We apply systematic searches and diagnostics to discriminate whether the observed Doppler shifts are caused by stellar surface inhomogeneities or by the radial pull of orbiting planets. We recover the planetary signals corresponding to 9 planets already announced by our group (Gl176b, Gl581b, c, d & e, Gl674b, Gl433b, Gl 667Cb and c). We present radial velocities that confirm GJ 849 hosts a Jupiter-mass planet, plus a long-term radial-velocity variation. We also present RVs that precise the planetary mass and period of Gl 832b. We detect long-term RV changes for Gl 367, Gl 680 and Gl 880 betraying yet unknown long-period companions. We identify candidate signals in the radial-velocity time series and demonstrate they are most probably caused by stellar surface inhomogeneities. Finally, we derive a first estimate of the occurrence of M-dwarf planets as a function of their minimum mass and orbital period. In particular, we find that giant planets (m sin i = 100-1,000 Mearth) have a low frequency (e.g. f<1% for P=1-10 d and f=0.02^{+0.03}_{-0.01} for P=10-100 d), whereas super-Earths (m sin i = 1-10 Mearth) are likely very abundant (f=0.36^{+0.25}_{-0.10} for P=1-10 d and f=0.35^{+0.45}_{-0.11} for P=10-100 d). We also obtained eta_earth=0.41^{+0.54}_{-0.13}, the frequency of habitable planets orbiting M dwarfs (1<m sin i<10 Mearth). For the first time, eta_earth is a direct measure and not a number extrapolated from the statistic of more massive and/or shorter-period planets.
