We present ISOPHOT spectrophotometric observations of SS433 at four different orbital phases in 1996 and 1997. The HeI+HeII lines in both spectra of SS433 and the Wolf-Rayet star WR147, a WN8+BO5 binary system, closely match. The 2.5-12 micron continuum radiation is due to an expanding wind free-free emission in an intermediate case between optically thick and optically thin regime. A rough mass loss rate evaluation gives about 1.4 10^{-4} M_sun/yr. Results are consistent with a Wolf-Rayet-like companion to the compact object in SS433.

We present mid-infrared spectrophotometric results obtained with the ISO on the peculiar X-ray binary Cygnus X-3 in quiescence, at orbital phases 0.83 to 1.04. The 2.4-12 microns continuum radiation observed with ISOPHOT-S can be explained by thermal free-free emission in an expanding wind with, above 6.5 microns, a possible additional black-body component with temperature T ~ 250 K and radius R ~ 5000 solar radii at 10 kpc, likely due to thermal emission by circumstellar dust. The observed brightness and continuum spectrum closely match that of the Wolf-Rayet star WR 147, a WN8+B0.5 binary system, when rescaled at the same 10 kpc distance as Cygnus X-3. A rough mass loss estimate assuming a WN wind gives ~ 1.2 10^{-4} M(sun)/yr. A line at ~ 4.3 microns with a more than 4.3 sigma detection level, and with a dereddened flux of 126 mJy, is interpreted as the expected He I 3p-3s line at 4.295 microns, a prominent line in the WR 147 spectrum. These results are consistent with a Wolf-Rayet-like companion to the compact object in Cygnus X-3 of WN8 type, a later type than suggested by earlier works.
The Infrared Space Observatory observed over 900 objects with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer in full-grating-scan mode (2.4-45.2 micron). We have developed a comprehensive system of spectral classification using these data. Sources are assigned to groups based on the overall shape of the spectral energy distribution (SED). The groups include naked stars, dusty stars, warm dust shells, cool dust shells, very red sources, and sources with emission lines but no detected continuum. These groups are further divided into subgroups based on spectral features that shape the SED such as silicate or carbon-rich dust emission, silicate absorption, ice absorption, and fine-structure or recombination lines. Caveats regarding the data and data reduction, and biases intrinsic to the database, are discussed. We also examine how the subgroups relate to the evolution of sources to and from the main sequence and how this classification scheme relates to previous systems.
The sample of IRAS galaxies with spectral energy distributions that peak near 60 microns are called Sixty Micron Peakers (SMPs or 60PKs). Their generally peculiar and amorphous morphologies, hot dust and lack of a cirrus component have been interpret ed as being indicative of a recent interaction/merger event. Mid-infrared spectra of eight SMPs, obtained with ISOPHOT-S in the ~2-11 micron band are presented. Four of the observed sources are H II region-like (H2) galaxies, three are Seyfert 2 and one is unclassified. Emission attributed to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 6.2, 7.7 and 8.6 micron is ubiquitous in the spectra. The PHOT-S spectrum of the H2 galaxy IRAS 23446+1519 exhibits a bright 11.04 micron line and an 8.6 micron feature of comparable size to its 7.7 micron feature. [S IV] emission at 10.5 micron was detected in three of four H2 galaxies and in one Seyfert 2 galaxy. The ratio of the 7.7 textmu m PAH feature to the continuum at 7.7 micron (PAH L/C) divides the eight SMPs at a ratio greater than 0.8 for H2 and less than 0.8 for Seyfert galaxies. An anti-correlation between PAH L/C and the ratio of the continuum flux at 5.9 micron to the flux at 60 micron is found, similar to that found in ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Silicate absorption at approximately 9.7 micron was observed in the Seyfert 2 galaxy, IRAS 04385-0828 and in IRAS 03344-2103. The previously unclassified SMP galaxy IRAS 03344-2103 is probably a Seyfert 2.

We present a radio polarization study of the supernova remnant CTB 80 based on images at 1420 MHz from the Canadian Galactic plane survey, at 2695 MHz from the Effelsberg survey of the Galactic plane, and at 4800 MHz from the Sino-German 6cm polariza tion survey of the Galactic plane. We obtained a rotation measure (RM) map using polarization angles at 2695 MHz and 4800 MHz as the polarization percentages are similar at these two frequencies. RM exhibits a transition from positive values to negative values along one of the shells hosting the pulsar PSR B1951+32 and its pulsar wind nebula. The reason for the change of sign remains unclear. We identified a partial shell structure, which is bright in polarized intensity but weak in total intensity. This structure could be part of CTB 80 or part of a new supernova remnant unrelated to CTB 80.
