We present the discovery of copious molecular gas in the halo of cid346, a z=2.2 quasar studied as part of the SINFONI survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER). New Atacama Compact Array (ACA) CO(3-2) observations detect a much higher flux (by a factor of $14pm5$) than measured on kpc-scales ($rlesssim8$ kpc) using previous snapshot Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) data. Such additional CO(3-2) emission traces a structure that extends out to $rsim200$ kpc in projected size, as inferred through direct imaging and confirmed by an analysis of the uv visibilities. This is the most extended molecular circumgalactic medium (CGM) reservoir that has ever been mapped. It shows a complex kinematics, with an overall broad line profile (FWHM = 1000 km/s) that is skewed towards redshifted velocities up to at least $vsim1000$ km/s. Using the optically thin assumption, we estimate a strict lower limit for the total molecular CGM mass observed by ACA of, $M_{mol}^{CGM}>10^{10}~M_{odot}$. There is however room for up to $M^{CGM}_{mol}sim 1.7times 10^{12}$ $M_{odot}$, once optically thick CO emission with $alpha_{rm CO}=3.6~M_{odot}~(K~km~s^{-1}~pc^2)^{-1}$ and $L^{prime}_{CO(3-2)}/L^{prime}_{CO(1-0)}=0.5$ are assumed. Since cid346 hosts AGN-driven ionized outflows and since there is no evidence of merging companions or an overdensity, we suggest that outflows may have played a crucial rule in seeding metal-enriched, dense gas on halo scales. However, the origin of such an extended molecular CGM remains unclear.

In an effort to search for Ly$alpha$ emission from circum- and intergalactic gas on scales of hundreds of kpc around $zsim3$ quasars, and thus characterise the physical properties of the gas in emission, we have initiated an extensive fast-survey wit h the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE): Quasar Snapshot Observations with MUse: Search for Extended Ultraviolet eMission (QSO MUSEUM). In this work, we report the discovery of an enormous Ly$alpha$ nebula (ELAN) around the quasar SDSS~J102009.99+104002.7 at $z=3.164$, which we followed-up with deeper MUSE observations. This ELAN spans $sim297$ projected kpc, has an average Ly$alpha$ surface brightness ${rm SB}_{rm Lyalpha}sim 6.04times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ (within the $2sigma$ isophote), and is associated with an additional four, previously unknown embedded sources: two Ly$alpha$ emitters and two faint active galactic nuclei (one Type-1 and one Type-2 quasar). By mapping at high significance the line-of-sight velocity in the entirety of the observed structure, we unveiled a large-scale coherent rotation-like pattern spanning $sim300$ km s$^{-1}$ with a velocity dispersion of $<270$ km s$^{-1}$, which we interpret as a signature of the inspiraling accretion of substructures within the quasars host halo. Future multiwavelength data will complement our MUSE observations, and are definitely needed to fully characterise such a complex system. None the less, our observations reveal the potential of new sensitive integral-field spectrographs to characterise the dynamical state of diffuse gas on large scales in the young Universe, and thereby witness the assembly of galaxies.
Luminous $zge7$ quasars provide direct probes of the evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the epoch of reionization (EoR). The Ly$alpha$ damping wing absorption imprinted by neutral hydrogen in the I GM can be detected in a single EoR quasar spectrum, allowing the measurement of the IGM neutral fraction towards that line of sight. However, damping wing features have only been detected in two $z>7$ quasars in previous studies. In this paper, we present new high quality optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the $z=7.00$ quasar DES J025216.64--050331.8 obtained with Keck/NIRES and Gemini/GMOS. By using the MgII single-epoch virial method, we find that it hosts a $rm (1.39pm0.16) times10^{9} ~M_odot$ SMBH accreting at an Eddington ratio of $lambda_{rm Edd}=0.7pm0.1$, consistent with the values seen in other luminous $zsim 7$ quasars. Furthermore, the Ly$alpha$ region of the spectrum exhibits a strong damping wing absorption feature. The lack of associated metal absorption in the quasar spectrum indicates that this absorption is imprinted by a neutral IGM. Using a state-of-the-art model developed by Davies et al., we measure a volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction at $z=7$ of $langle x_{rm HI} rangle = 0.70^{+0.20}_{-0.23} (^{+0.28}_{-0.48})$ within 68% (95%) confidence intervals when marginalizing over quasar lifetimes of $10^3le t_{rm Q}le10^8$ yr. This is the highest IGM neutral fraction yet measured using reionization-era quasar spectra.
The recent discovery by Cantalupo et al. (2014) of the largest (~500 kpc) and luminous Ly-alpha nebula associated with the quasar UM287 (z=2.279) poses a great challenge to our current understanding of the astrophysics of the halos hosting massive z~ 2 galaxies. Either an enormous reservoir of cool gas is required $Msimeq10^{12}$ $M_{odot}$, exceeding the expected baryonic mass available, or one must invoke extreme gas clumping factors not present in high-resolution cosmological simulations. However, observations of Ly-alpha emission alone cannot distinguish between these two scenarios. We have obtained the deepest ever spectroscopic integrations in the HeII and CIV lines with the goal of detecting extended line emission, but detect neither line to a 3$sigma$ limiting SB $simeq10^{-18}$ erg/s/cm$^2$/arcsec$^2$. We construct models of the expected emission spectrum in the highly probable scenario that the nebula is powered by photoionization from the central hyper-luminous quasar. The non-detection of HeII implies that the nebular emission arises from a mass $M_{rm c}lesssim6.4times10^{10}$ $M_{odot}$ of cool gas on ~200 kpc scales, distributed in a population of remarkably dense ($n_{rm H}gtrsim3$ cm$^{-3}$) and compact ($Rlesssim20$ pc) clouds, which would clearly be unresolved by current cosmological simulations. Given the large gas motions suggested by the Ly-alpha line ($vsimeq$ 500 km/s), it is unclear how these clouds survive without being disrupted by hydrodynamic instabilities. Our study serves as a benchmark for future deep integrations with current and planned wide-field IFU such as MUSE, KCWI, and KMOS. Our work suggest that a $simeq$ 10 hr exposure would likely detect ~10 rest-frame UV/optical emission lines, opening up the possibility of conducting detailed photoionization modeling to infer the physical state of gas in the CGM.
The most distant known quasar recently discovered by Ba~nados et al. (2018) is at $z=7.5$ (690 Myr after the Big Bang), at the dawn of galaxy formation. We explore the host galaxy of the brightest quasar in the large volume cosmological hydrodynamic simulation BlueTides, which in Phase II has reached these redshifts. The brightest quasar in BlueTides has a luminosity of a $sim$ few $10^{13} L_{odot}$ and a black hole mass of $6.4 times 10^{8} M_{odot}$ at $z sim 7.5$, comparable to the observed quasar (the only one in this large volume). The quasar resides in a rare halo of mass $M_{H} sim 10^{12} M_{odot}$ and has a host galaxy of stellar mass of $4 times 10^{10}M_{odot}$ with an ongoing (intrinsic) star formation rate of $sim 80 M_{odot} yr^{-1}$. The corresponding intrinsic UV magnitude of the galaxy is $-23.1$, which is roughly $2.7$ magnitudes fainter than the quasars magnitude of $-25.9$. We find that the galaxy is highly metal enriched with a mean metallicity equal to the solar value. We derive quasar and galaxy spectral energy distribution (SED) in the mid and near infrared JWST bands. We predict a significant amount of dust attenuation in the rest-frame UV corresponding to $A_{1500} sim 1.7$ giving an UV based SFR of $sim 14 M_{odot} yr^{-1}$. We present mock JWST images of the galaxy with and without central point source, in different MIRI and NIRCam filters. The host galaxy is detectable in NIRCam filters, but it is extremely compact ($R_{E}=0.35$ kpc). It will require JWSTs exquisite sensitivity and resolution to separate the galaxy from the central point source. Finally within the FOV of the quasar in BlueTides there are two more sources that would be detectable by JWST.

We present deep MUSE integral-field unit (IFU) spectroscopic observations of the giant (~150 x 80 kpc) Ly-alpha halo around the z=4.1 radio galaxy TNJ J1338-1942. This 9-hr observation maps the two-dimensional kinematics of the Ly-alpha emission acro ss the halo. We identify two HI absorbers which are seen against the Ly-alpha emission, both of which cover the full 150 x 80 kpc extent of the halo and so have covering fractions ~1. The stronger and more blue-shifted absorber (dv~1200 km/s) has dynamics that mirror that of the underlying halo emission and we suggest that this high column material (n(HI) ~ 10^19.4 /cm^2), which is also seen in CIV absorption, represents an out-flowing shell that has been driven by the AGN (or star formation) within the galaxy. The weaker (n(HI)~10^14 /cm^2) and less blue shifted (dv~500 km/s) absorber most likely represents material in the cavity between the out-flowing shell and the Ly-alpha halo. We estimate that the mass in the shell must be of order 10^10 Msol -- a significant fraction of the ISM from a galaxy at z=4. The large scales of these coherent structures illustrate the potentially powerful influence of AGN feedback on the distribution and energetics of material in their surroundings. Indeed, the discovery of high-velocity (~1000 km/s), group-halo-scale (i.e. >150 kpc) and mass-loaded winds in the vicinity of the central radio source are broadly in agreement with the requirements of models that invoke AGN-driven outflows to regulate star formation and black-hole growth in massive galaxies at early times.
