A long-standing conjecture by Heath, Pemmaraju, and Trenk states that the upward book thickness of outerplanar DAGs is bounded above by a constant. In this paper, we show that the conjecture holds for subfamilies of upward outerplanar graphs, namely those whose underlying graph is an internally-triangulated outerpath or a cactus, and those whose biconnected components are $at$-outerplanar graphs. On the complexity side, it is known that deciding whether a graph has upward book thickness $k$ is NP-hard for any fixed $k ge 3$. We show that the problem, for any $k ge 5$, remains NP-hard for graphs whose domination number is $O(k)$, but it is FPT in the vertex cover number.

We analyze a directed variation of the book embedding problem when the page partition is prespecified and the nodes on the spine must be in topological order (upward book embedding). Given a directed acyclic graph and a partition of its edges into $k $ pages, can we linearly order the vertices such that the drawing is upward (a topological sort) and each page avoids crossings? We prove that the problem is NP-complete for $kge 3$, and for $kge 4$ even in the special case when each page is a matching. By contrast, the problem can be solved in linear time for $k=2$ pages when pages are restricted to matchings. The problem comes from Jack Edmonds (1997), motivated as a generalization of the map folding problem from computational origami.
In the study of extensions of polytopes of combinatorial optimization problems, a notorious open question is that for the size of the smallest extended formulation of the Minimum Spanning Tree problem on a complete graph with $n$ nodes. The best know n lower bound is the trival (dimension) bound, $Omega(n^2)$, the best known upper bound is the extended formulation by Wong (1980) of size $O(n^3)$ (also Martin, 1991). In this note we give a nondeterministic communication protocol with cost $log_2(n^2log n)+O(1)$ for the support of the spanning tree slack matrix. This means that the combinatorial lower bounds can improve the trivial lower bound only by a factor of (at most) $O(log n)$.
We present a new $4$-approximation algorithm for the Combinatorial Motion Planning problem which runs in $mathcal{O}(n^2alpha(n^2,n))$ time, where $alpha$ is the functional inverse of the Ackermann function, and a fully distributed version for the sa me in asynchronous message passing systems, which runs in $mathcal{O}(nlog_2n)$ time with a message complexity of $mathcal{O}(n^2)$. This also includes the first fully distributed algorithm in asynchronous message passing systems to perform shortcut operations on paths, a procedure which is important in approximation algorithms for the vehicle routing problem and its variants. We also show that our algorithm gives feasible solutions to the $k$-TSP problem with an approximation factor of $2$ in both centralized and distributed environments. The broad idea of the algorithm is to distribute the set of vertices into two subsets and construct paths for each salesman over each of the two subsets. Finally we combine these pairwise disjoint paths for each salesman to obtain a set of paths that span the entire graph. This is similar to the algorithm by Yadlapalli et. al. cite{3.66} but differs in respect to the fact that it does not require us to use minimum cost matching as a subroutine, and hence can be easily distributed.
We study $k$-page upward book embeddings ($k$UBEs) of $st$-graphs, that is, book embeddings of single-source single-sink directed acyclic graphs on $k$ pages with the additional requirement that the vertices of the graph appear in a topological order ing along the spine of the book. We show that testing whether a graph admits a $k$UBE is NP-complete for $kgeq 3$. A hardness result for this problem was previously known only for $k = 6$ [Heath and Pemmaraju, 1999]. Motivated by this negative result, we focus our attention on $k=2$. On the algorithmic side, we present polynomial-time algorithms for testing the existence of $2$UBEs of planar $st$-graphs with branchwidth $beta$ and of plane $st$-graphs whose faces have a special structure. These algorithms run in $O(f(beta)cdot n+n^3)$ time and $O(n)$ time, respectively, where $f$ is a singly-exponential function on $beta$. Moreover, on the combinatorial side, we present two notable families of plane $st$-graphs that always admit an embedding-preserving $2$UBE.

We completely determine the complexity status of the dominating set problem for hereditary graph classes defined by forbidden induced subgraphs with at most five vertices.
